I’d have Mishima: a life in 4 chapters nominated and win overall

Ran is by far my favorite film from this year, and it's in my top 10 of all time. Nausicaä is great too. It came out in 1984 in Japan; didn't know it was eligible for the 1986 Oscars

Really good list of movies…..why do the Oscar nominees look so wrong? Different taste at this time, group, think, marketing?

Michael J Fox in Back to the Future was the kid everyone wanted to be; the teenage everyman. Glad they're making a reboot - a timeless story.

I would have picked ran or Mishima. Altough i need to rewatch Mishima when i have read the rest of the mishima novels mentionend in the movie.Altough I always think of Mishima nowadays when i see a painting of Saint Sebastian.

As much as I love Purple Rose of Cairo as well. I agree with you, I have to go with Mishima.

I haven't seen Mishima. Even if I could pick Tampopo, I'd still have to go with Back to the Future. It's as perfect as a movie can get -- very entertaining, layers on layers of narrative, and perfectly constructed.

thank you. It's a worthy pick. Wish they would've made it back then!

good question. I did check that one out for this video, watched it, and then wrote about it on letterboxd. Short answer is that I think it's pretty flawed, though I'm glad you brought it up here.

Kiss of the Spider Woman is a strong movie. The 80s was a great decade for movies overall but 1985 met have been the weakest year of the decade. I will give Back to the Future Best Director and The Purple Rose of Cairo Best Picture.

Not a great year overall and the best picture choices are even worse. A special mention would go to Come and See and My Life As A Dog that would be in my top five but were not eligible for the Oscars until 1987. My honorable mentions Witness The Official Story (Argentina) Pee Wee's Big Adventure Desperately Seeking Susan Blood Simple My nominees After Hours Back To The Future Brazil The Purple Rose of Cairo Ran (Japan) My winner - RAN

turns out that "Come and See" was eligible in for the 1987 Oscars, and I have no idea why it was that delayed here.

Such a weak year in movies, I simply don't like many of the more highly regarded ones. I'd probably end up with Rocky IV and Teen Wolf on my nominations list just for nostalgia purposes. Who doesn't like a werewolf that plays basketball? Id give the oscar to Purple Rose of Cairo. I really like Ran as well.
