Has anyone ever asked students to identify the main idea of a text and received a really random response? Either something that has nothing to really do with the text or a tiny tiny detail from the book? Type YES in the comments if you can relate.

Yes, main idea can be tricky. I have used your animals passages and love them to bits! I like the detective analogy.
