Logical Beats

Some simple examples of how to use OR and AND logic to create more interesting rhythmic patterns in your modular. I show three examples:
• 00:23 using OR to add two patterns together, creating a more complex composite pattern
• 02:31 using AND to mute a pattern based on a second gate, creating a more open composite pattern
• 04:19 using AND to trigger a new event or sound when beats in two patterns align

No wonder I havent found a good use for my logic module Ive been completely misunderstanding the OR function as the opposite of AND. This solves so many issues I was contemplating buying more complex modules for. God I love Eurorack lol and your videos are great bro keep it up!!

Another excellent video on drum patterns! I never really saw a use for my AND module, but this video completely opened the flood gates to new ideas. I think I may try this in the current patch I’m working on!

Good stuff! Logic is a lot of fun. I've got the 3 RYO logic modules coupled with 4ms Rotating Clock Divider and Shuffling Clock Multiplier which is a pretty insane combination. I try not to think too hard about it and just patch until I get an outcome I like. The RYO modules are great because they offer the standard outputs as well as inverted so that any pattern can be used for both up and down beat. If you are into logic I highly recommend them.

Yes, RYO is definitely one of the better companies when it comes to looking for logic modules. I just received my AniModule LogicOgic yesterday, and will be putting it into my live case this weekend.

It's fun. However, I'm not sure this makes more musical beats than e.g. a Korg Volca Drum, which costs about 5-10 % of what is needed to create these drums.

I like what Shakmat do in general, and Time Wizard looks like a lot of fun; I'll have to try it. But the underlying patterns, Fill Density, and Chaos in Grids is at the center of what I do.

@@LearningModular Of course, as far as I can tell, you can also program the Five12 Vector to do all those things! But may be less fun to manipulate and change in real time. But I have made some fairly complex drum patterns with probability with it, in addition to its melodic powers.

Hello. I see you have a new version of Circles. Does your reset issue you explained in a former video have been solved? No more need of a logic module?

Yes - Euclidean Circles v2 has a preference for how it treats the reset, which freed up the logic module.

Are those cables ties reusable? I've thought about using cable ties as its such a tight and neat way of cleaning things up but don't wanna generate too much more plastic waste....

Good point. These are not reusable. There are reusable cable ties, but you have to leave a fair mount of their "tail" on to be able to re-thread and re-use them, which gets bulky. An earlier comment from D B Pawlan links to some really nice reusable twists. Both of those solutions would work fine on a studio system or something with more clearance when you pack it up to travel. And there are small velcro ties as well. Unfortunately, since I want to close the lid of this 12U system with those cables left patches, anything bulky like that works against me. I think something like the twist ties you get at grocery stores would be a solution then - either re-use the plastic and metal ones, or get the paper and metal ones (both biodegrade) and trim as needed.

I forgot about beaded reusable cable ties - they're not too bulky, and can be trimmed down fairly short while still being easy to re-use: amzn.to/339uHc0

@@LearningModular ah yeah just looked those up, not seen those beaded ones before! i do use the thin twist wire sometimes that you get when you buy.... not even sure where i got them from but i keep them all and do reuse them! Beaded reusable cables is a good shout!

Great explanation on logic! I have the ES Pico Logic and find it almost intimidating as using it requires taking on another level in mapping out a patch, but it is admittedly a great tool to break up the predictability of a rhythm. On a different topic, I found something cool to wrap up cables with, though they are a bit larger. Thought that you might be interested as I saw your zip ties. Thanks for the tip! I considered these, and they'd be great for, say, a large patch on my studio modular, or holding audio, MIDI, etc. cables together. But they ended up being too bulky for my live case, as I need a minimum size (so I could see the modules behind them), and even more importantly close the case.
