This is so helpful, thank you! My LH 4th finger is fine but I've had so much trouble with the RH 4th whenever there are skips. I also have very small hands so seeing your placement at the end during those last variations made me realize I've been trying to mimic harpists with much longer fingers. Thank you!

Great teaching as always. My fourth finger is really weak, any suggestions as to how to strengthen it apart from the exercises shown so far.

Do you recommend any practice books by Janet Harbison? I am getting my first harp in a week and I am building my musical library for harp. Do you recommend any other technique books,?

Hi Kristina, that’s super exciting that you’re getting your harp so soon!! 😃😃 Congrats!! I haven’t tried any of Janet’s books but she’s a lovely person and an amazing harpist, I enjoyed meeting her back in 2019 at the Somerset harp festival 😍 My main recommendation for exercise books is Grossi Method Book, and I know Carrie likes “Harp for Today” by Susan McDonald and Linda Wood, but I don’t have that book. I would say it’s best to just get whatever books your harp teacher recommends if you’re going to take harp lessons, or if you’re going to learn from online courses you don’t really need any books to start with. But if you do buy you want to get the books that are referenced in the courses. At Learning the Harp we’re planning to release some exercise videos soon and they will reference those two books. But you can actually learn from our courses without any exercise books so there’s no hurry to buy now - I would rather recommend buying 3 courses up front so you can have all the demonstrations and clear instruction in technique from the beginning. Often people get through their first 3 early-beginner courses within the first month or two and that’s a really solid way to start! Hope that helps ❤️❤️❤️ Have fun when you’re harp arrives!!! And let me know if you have any other questions 👍🏻

I've been teaching myself the harp for the last few years, but I'm finding it difficult because I've broken both wrists and my right thumb, so it is a little hard to get my hands to cooperate. Do you have tips for hand warm-ups or exercises to strengthen my wrists for playing?

Really helpful, thanks. I'll be using those techniques to strengthen my 4th finger. And I'm glad to see a finger placing exercise highlighted. I think I'll be slow for a while, but that exercise will help. Thanks for this video!

Thank you! Any tips for playing with a short fourth finger? That has been my biggest impediment to keeping a good hand position 🙁
@LearningtheHarp
@LearningtheHarp 5 жыл бұрын
Ah, frustrating! I can’t say offhand, we’d have to do some experimenting to figure out what works best for you. It’s ok if it looks slightly different to some harpists you admire (eg my fingers are way shorter than Josh Layne’s), but the principals of good hand position should be possible to achieve with some adjustments in angle of your hand... 🤔

How do we know which finger no’ s we use. For example how do we know the note needs say finger three ?
@LearningtheHarp

In the beginning it’s important to use music that has the fingering written in, by someone who teaches good harp technique and you trust their fingering choices. After you have internalised good fingering from learning from sheet music like that, you can start to choose your own fingering for music where it isn’t written in. I have a video about “10 rules of fingering” which could help you understand the reasoning behind why fingering is chosen in a particular way. I don’t recommend chooosing your own fingering at the beginning of your harp learning, because fingering is very closely linked with hand position and technique, and poor fingering choices can negatively affect your technique as your learn early on 😊

To me it seems the 3rd is hardest because of independence issues, and it's weakest for me especially on the left.
