This AFFORDABLE 42' Project Yacht Has Surprising VALUE [Full Tour] Learning the Lines

I was pleasantly surprised by the Gulfstar 42. I like the layout, the cockpit design, and the shear amount of space in the engine room and lazarettes. Gulfstar is typically not a brand you find on people's lists for bluewater cruisers, but I don't think these boats should be counted out just yet. For the money, Gulfstars seem to offer more than other brands out there, meaning you can get a bigger boat with more accommodation for less.
This particular boat might make a great Caribbean cruiser with some time and money put in for a refit.

The red device aft is a small and cheap vertical wind generator (google "vertical wind generator")

They aren't great because they create drag on the fins going into the wind which greatly depletes their potential rotational speed. TO BE AVOIDED. The generator however if fitted to traditional blades on a horizontal axis are reasonably good. I would prefer the engine "access" to be internal storage space or cabin space from inside the main cabiln, as engines are generallly reliable and service and repair is not required often enough to merit the loss of living space, in a Jenneau or Bennateau they are either sleeping cabin(s)and/or Head. Also in heavy weather both main and aft cabins would take a lot of water from the cockpit sole.

This was an interesting boat for sure, but what was that clunky looking "box" near the bow? Loved all that room around the engine but didn't notice much if any sound proofing! V-berth was very dark and tight looking. This boat's galley was huge for it's size but the settee seemed way too small and cramped. Aft cabin the same way, but perhaps it was designed for "little people"!? So happy to see you still doing these boat tours AND working AND being a new parent!

Definitely gonna need some work on the trim the engine and it looks like there might be a leak somewhere from that headliner. Mixed feelings on that PVC on the standing rig. It’s basically to stop chafing on the lines but it seems to hold moisture around the turnbuckles. I think if you would replace the standing rigging I will put some ventilation holes in the lower section if I continue to use the PVC rollers. That’s for that funky multi anchor shaped doodad that was on the stern deck as that it’s not bolted down and has some kind of a rope attached to it makes me think it might be some kind of sea anchored or drogue.

Wow 42'. I would have guessed 50+ from the photo. However when you went inside it does look smaller. Strange layout with the aft cabin inaccessible from the salon. For me the center cockpit is the outstanding feature of the boat. The aft deck is interesting but what about mounting a dingy?

Thanks for the tour. Only 42 of these built so you are really touring vintage history. Can I ask why you are a fan of the center cockpit design?

Center cockpits usually give you a really protected cockpit, a nice open aft deck, and typically a nice aft cabin. The tradeoff is a smaller main salon, but I think it's a fair trade. This point might be moot for newer designs though that can incorporate an aft cabin, or cabins, with an aft cockpit because of how they carry the beam all the way aft. So I guess my real preference is for center cockpits in older boats only.

Actually not a bad looking boat for the money. You did describe it accurately as a "project" boat. Just a couple of questions, Is there a water maker on board? and what is the capacity for both fresh water and black water? And lastly how much would it cost to replace any missing electronics, autopilot and electronic chart/plotter?

Overall, I like it but the engine room is kind of out of proportion to the size of this boat. It almost felt like TOO much storage for a boat this size. I think I would give up one of the lazarettes for a 1/4 berth. I think you would still have comfortable engine access and the berth would give you the flexibility of extra sleeping and still be able to use it for storing sails or whatever if needed. I am no expert, but the price seems a bit high considering the standing rigging needs replaced and there was a lot of "deferred maintenance" that needed to happen before it is a trustworthy boat. Great walkthrough.

One thing you should always do is pull up the floor hatches to show the bilge. This is a 20k boat. Probably needs to be repowered, standing rigging needs replaced, don't know the condition of the sails but I can guess, and the condition of the mast step is suspect. Basically you're buying a hull and deck.

a 48volt battery bank and electric motor could move this boat just fine, altho 72 volts might work better with a 72 volt motor to really get it to hullspeed.

I don't know if the year was mentioned but year is missing from the name, description, and the data sheet in the video. Judging from the time period, this really seems cramped for a boat this size. I guess the price reflects this but it really feels like a smaller mid 30ft boat from a useable space perspective but the cost of owning a 40'+ boat with upkeep and marina fees are considered.

Agree with you 100 per cent about this being a great layout. Two couples could live happily aboard without getting in each other's hair. Wikipedia is interesting about Gulfstar, seems it was the baby of one of the pioneers of fibreglass boats in Florida, Vince Lazzara. But this one does not look as though it's had a lot of mechanical maintenance, I would be suspicious of all the systems and ideally would want to fit a new Yanmar or Kubota. Plenty of engine room to do the swap! So it needs to be super-cheap to be a viable project. But assuming the deck and hull are good it's definitely worth restoring. Get rid of that monstrosity hanging off the back. As you say, it would make a great Caribbean sailor. Why don't you buy it? Plenty of room for you, the Mrs and junior!

I would have liked this boat better if it had been in well maintained condition. It almost looks like it was abandoned, as opposed to having an owner who wants to sell her and has cleaned her up (and cleaned her out) to help with the sale. That hardtop is a lot of windage that can't be taken down and there does not seem to be a dodger so you are still going to get spray/wind. All that 'storage' is the loss of living space., not a good trade-off in a 40' boat. No nav station, wet heads, no davits for a dingy, no good place to store one inflated on deck, small galley... That low headroom in the v-berth means only good for sleeping. Decent liveaboard if you are mostly at a dock and don't mind a small saloon and lack of a separate shower. I like interesting boats but to me, this is a miss.

A good example of what I call a "negative value" boat. That's a boat that, even with a lot of sweat equity, you will still have to put so much money into her that you will be totally upside down value-wise when you are done. There are very few project boats out there that can support a refit investment. You are much better off taking the money you planned to spend on the project boat and its refit and finding something newer that just needs cosmetic work, even if you have to go smaller. This one needs much more than that.

For a boat this size, there should be much more room inside it. Far too much space has been completely wasted by creating a huge engine compartment for such a tiny engine. Had that space been used more effectively, there could have been an interior passage going between the for and aft cabins with a couple of bunks added in along the side of the hull on one side and an additional head added in on the other side for the rear compartment. That huge engine compartment, while seemingly nice at first glance, simply has no business being in a boat that people are expected to live aboard during trips. SUCH A MASSIVE WASTE OF VERY VALUABLE SPACE.

In the head in the aft cabin on the sink you see a plastic drum, that is a hand crank washing machine. I have used one and one shirt and a pair of jeans is all you can wash at one time. Great for Ramon eating college students but not full time sailors. I have seen better boats for sale at less money. I would pass on this diamond in the extra rough.

No need for more math teachers here. 2) As a TA I taught undergrads - like u seems to be. Frequently I had to grade you and your peers in the "hopeless pile". 3) Yrs and yrs ago I completely restored my 31 foot sailboat - hull, rig and interior. Yes, the boat is now on land, but that's because we frequently have up to 5" of ice in the marina. However, soon after Easter I will start a second major overhaul and I have never regard myself as "dry land sailor".
