I’m a bit confused by this since I thought the minimal ISO would not install a graphical environment. Yet you ended up with the standard GNOME desktop. 🤔 I will have to try the minimal ISO.

Thanks for another great video, Jay!

As has been the case lately, there's a good bit of context missing in this video. AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux are both binary compatible with RHEL. Choose RHEL if you need commercial support. Choose either Almalinux or Rocky depending on your comfort level with the supporting communities around those distributions.

Actually, Rocky Linux is bug for bug 1 : 1 compatible. AlmaLinux is only application binary compatible because of IBM.

People don't come here for the context. We are here to Learn Linux... Hence the name... And we don't all need to know all the ins and outs of Linux to be a student, IT professional, or hobbyist.

But why use this distro for a workstation over something like Fedora?
@mikesutton916111 күн бұрын
I purchased a new Bosgame AMD Ryzen 7 5825U minipc which comes with Windows 11 Pro. I previously purchased two similar minipcs (slightly older) which I successfully configured and installed Debian 12 in dual boot configuration(s). When I attempted to install Rocky Linux 9.5 or AlmaLinux 9.5 on the newer minipc, lots of problems. It seemed to recognize the available disk space on the hard drive during setup (where I freed it up in WIndows 11 Disk Manager) and seemed to let me select it during installation, but it failed to complete the configuration where it would dual boot (or boot at all). I am not a Linux expert (trying to be), but during the trouble shooting it appeared that I could open a shell and see folders. I'm guessing it failed to create the Linux boot partition, and the bios was not modified to reflect anything related to the new Linux option. Any ideas? Debian 12 was simple and worked without a glitch. I turned the normal bios settings off (i.e., Secure Boot, etc.) .

Is this the same install as oracle Linux?
@huljaxful5 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure that the installer is anaconda. I still have flashbacks from fedora installations. They should have gone with calamares or anything else than anaconda. Not logical at all, that anaconda :)

The only thing that seriously annoys me about the entire Fedora/RHEL branch of Linux is that damn Anaconda installer. It seriously needs an overhaul, especially the menu for the storage formatting.

This is virtually the same process, step-by-step, to install Fedora. Did not know that red hat derivatives shared the same install process.
@lian_drake5 ай бұрын
That’s because Fedora is actually the upstream for CentOS Stream and CentOS Stream is the upstream for RHEL (as far as I know)

Alma - Apple?

Unfortunately no. Their wiki says it comes from the Spanish alma which means soul.

Why tho. Server engineers generaly went to some sort of IT school. . . in general id think people who do not even know how to install x distribution of linux using its gui . . . are incapable of handling IT administration in corporate environment. That said for a generic workstation, if You want to develop code, graphics, engines, machines, games, buildings, or play the sims pretending you are developing the actual house ( you dont even realize how many people come to an architect asking for a project based on their the sims design because SIMS is easy and sufficient while CAD is too hard) then you actualy kinda sorta want your software and libraries to NOT BE 3 years out of date at day one ? Because everything you produce will be 3 years out of date at day one at least and it might just happen that before you finish your project in a month or 5 years it might just be generaly incompatible with modern software ? It makes more sense to bite sharper more bloodier edge of the versioning bullet, sacrafice some stability and adapt for modern changes as you go. Thus me question. Why. People who need systems based on warmly coloured head covers need not a tutorial for it. I've got a fun guide video project idea, "how to use one steam library disk/folder for multiple types of systems to prevent redownloading 5TB of game data" (Steam linux ruins ntfs and fat based steam library with all sort of oddieties, dot files, incorrect naming scheems and such, literally crashing partition tables to smitherins, making entire drives read-only or worse)

If your going to make linux distro videos then for the love of god please learn to give us the information we need like 1) place on the distro list, A) 25TH 2) BASED ON WHAT DISTRO, a) RPM Redhat distro (so can it install davinci resolve easily?) 3) why rehat, why alma (cant asnwer that and thats why I watched your video! was for the answes!) Do a better job, installing linux any distro is a almost no brainer these days, so packages, store, speed, bugs and whens the next version and whats it going to fix or improve
@EmirKATIRCI5 ай бұрын
*facepalm* I don't care about any of those things neither should you. Because; A) Distro watch doesn't check real installs and users their list is based on the clicks that a Distro gets on their website and doesn't represent real users. B) As far as the package managers go RPM is like a industry standard, C) Rethat linux is one of the oldest and respected distros. They might also made the most contribution to Linux code base. D) Who cares about a closed source video editing program? Use one of the many available. E) You're nothing but a insignificant troll who doesn't even know what's what about Linux and trying to besmirch a man's good job. F) I wish you a bad day and hope that you would stub your toe hard.
