I know a good deal of music theory and this is still quite helpful. I’m also happy for how a tool like this will help others who do not have much music theory be more creative. I strongly suggest that anyone interested in this tool google about music modes and emotions, this will give you more information on how to use modes to create emotional responses in your music. Not all minor keys are the same quality of sad, for example Phrygian is quite dark, sand thing for Major scales

Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I can literally feel your enthusiasm about this powerful tool. And you let us share in the discovery. This way I absolutely understood how it works. Also, your mention of the write block, and how to use it to break through it, was an incredible help to me! I was already tempted to buy Cubase because it has chord tracks already built into the sequencer, but now I know I can save myself that expense. I just need Reason, nothing more. Thanks for this!

What I would wish for is that you can lay down some chords in "track 1" and then you have something like Scales & Chords that can interpret what the chords are being played in track one to keep your notes in chord as you play to the other tracks. You could the let an ARP play to this device and the ARP would adjust to the chords being played so you then get movement in the ARP. Scaler sort of does this but the Reason MIDI issues limit it.

Cool vid... Thanks for the in depth tutorial. I just upgraded to Reason 9 today. I am excited! The funny thing about Scales and Chords is that... I was like...how do you play with 2 hands with this instrument? Then I thought about it... Well... the left hand is essentially the chord progression and the right hand is....wait for it... wait for it... typically the melody...lol... I felt so not smart... Meaning that I can use this tool for chord progression and my vocals for the melody....smh....lol... In either case, I hope you found that as funny as I did...In either case, cool vid and thanks for sharing your experience.

All controls can be automated simply by right clicking them and selecting "Edit Automation" this creates a track in the sequencer and from there you can just press Record and the sequencer will record when you use that control.

QUESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTION? So i'm using an Axiom Pro 49, and when i'm using scales and chords, it doesn't seem as if the notes on the device match the note being played on my computer. So after watching propellerheads tutorial, I did learn how to actually use this a little bit more. When I'm playing any note, and the key is set to C Maj for instance the key I press on my piano doesn't reflect on the device. If that makes any sense let me know, if not, i'll try and explain a bit more.

I don't understand! In the final, on Dorian scale in F, you played ghost notes! But i realized that this dark keys no make part of Dorian, so no must be played! Im right?
@LearnReason8 жыл бұрын
I am only playing notes in that scale, but I had the Filter Notes off so I did not screw up, in other words I would play a note in the scale even if I pressed a key that was not in that scale. I did all that in real time and wanted to at least come up with something cool.....
@THEH4VOC8 жыл бұрын
Ok, so note filter is only for a learn scale! And, if this is off, no matter if i play a wrong key, i always go be in the scale desired! Right now? Sorry , i have a bad english!
@LearnReason8 жыл бұрын
Yes, I explain this in the tutorial. If Filter Notes is OFF this means even if you press a note that is not in the scale the device will correct it for you and play a note that will be in the scale and sound good. Turn Filter Notes on to learn and practice scales, turn off Filter Notes to play a scale, test out a scale and if you are digging it turn Filter Notes on and practice the scale and learn it and write some music.

Your four bar lick in F dorian is actually in C minor.
@LearnReason8 жыл бұрын
That's interesting as the notes that are played are in the Key of F in the Dorian scale per the Scales & Chords device, Filter Notes is off which means the wrong notes I am hitting are being corrected to the right note so they fall into the F/Dorian, I am not schooled into all these scales and only know that the key and Scale has been selected and Scales & Chords will only play those notes and in order to play it correct on a piano you would have to hit the right keys.

@@LearnReason like instead of hitting a key and all keys forming the chord hit at once I wish there was a knob or something where you can manipulate the speed of the keys like a strum effect.....zero they will all hit together and let's say turn the knob to 7 and you'll start getting that strum effect....higher ya go the more delay.

you know on a real i love reason but im kinda tired of them making us by a rack extension that will be given to us pretty must free in the next upgrade. this is the same shit as auto theory (a rack extension i paid 50 bucks for) and to be honest auto theory may be better because you can do more than just chords you can do strums and things like that at different speeds and and note lengths etc. you are talking like this is the best thing since slice bread when reason already soaked money out of their users from auto theory which is better. now to people who never experienced auto theory gonna go wowee but i think they should at least sample it its the best.Reason is my favorite program but i really wish they stop making us buy shit twice
@LearnReason8 жыл бұрын
You also get Note Echo, make strums easily, Dual Arpeggio along with Pitch Edit, tons of new sounds and more. Also Scales & Chords IMHO is way easier to use and understand than Auto Theory. Don't get caught up in the politics of a DAW it just leads you away from the music.
