Great video for reasons too many to mention. Thanks for the cockpit tour and the near-uninterrupted flight video! Also, the gear down maneuvers -- i.e. the "dirty" portion of the program -- is to demonstrate prowess and maneuverability at low speed, both the pilot's skill and the aircraft's flyability.

Two things about this video both interested me and surprised me. First was the automatic leading edge flaps automatically extending and retracting as needed during flight. Second was how extremely rough the ride became when pulling +2 Gs. I've never seen a fighter rumble so extreme when pulling Gs. Cool Video!

it allows you use the rudder pedals when you want only the rudders to turn or you can use the rudders and the nose wheel simultaneously when it is activated. So if its engage you push the rudders then your wheel is turned along with the rudders. If it's disengaged then only your rudders will correspond with rudder inputs and the nose wheel stays straight

fantastic footage. Clever editing between inside and outside, but it's pretty clear that the external footage was from a completely different display. The weather is different, but something more telling is that the dirty roll on takeoff is to the right when shown from cockpit. The external footage shows a roll to the left. My guess is there wasn't any external footage from the display that was shot internally so they had to use B-roll from another display. Most people won't notice :)

I actually have asked the pilot about that landing. Apparently the hook was not deployed for the entire landing. There is a sensor and a light that tells the pilot when the hook has pressure on it, they used the hook sensor to help them with their approach , checking how far they had to go to touchdown. Apparently they did not grab any wires with it.

@ptverhey11 жыл бұрын
yes the CF-18 has both carrier yoke and hook to launch and recover from a carrier, the same as the US marines F-18's. even though CDN pilots are not carrier rated, this is a redundancy as both US and CDN troops are comandable by either country in the event of emergancy and also for landing strip arresting cables while landing on damaged, conjested[taxiway overrun] or short(ened) runways[makeshift or not].

Canada's first response to the disaster inflicted by Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf of Mexico coastline of the United States was the deployment of a Vancouver heavy urban search and rescue team, which arrived in Lafayette, Louisiana on the evening of August 31, 2005, arriving on a WestJet Airlines aircraft.
@DavidIdeaMachine11 жыл бұрын
That aircraft could have slid for miles without the hook. The CF18 doesn't have a drag chute. The CF18 also uses the tailhook regularly upon emergency landings, because in a situation where the aircraft must land overspeed, even 6 mile runways aren't enough to stop an aircraft going 200 knots. I have no idea where you guys got your info
@motanelustelistu11 жыл бұрын

Godspeed to you. Work hard, study hard and best of luck.
@likeawhispr11 жыл бұрын
You can have wheels down in any aircraft as long as you don't exceed the maximum airspeed that the landing gear can handle which is published for each particular aircraft. You cannot land on water in an amphibious plane with the gear down or the plane will flip. In some business "jets", the maximum speed that I can CYCLE the gear down might be 200 knots, but the maximum speed that I can FLY with the gear down and locked might be about 250 knots. gear can be used as air brake too.

@DavidP74711 жыл бұрын
Its called a dirty pass, flaps gear and hook down for your approach to the carrier. Although the Canadian pilots do not land on carriers, the F-18 is a Navy Strike Fighter made by Boeing for the US Navy.

Have you not seen the F-111 belly land (emergency)? The tail hook stops the plane with a cable very quickly minimizing potential for worse problems. Did you not think for a second before you wrote your comment?
@zone5ive11 жыл бұрын
Look up hornet digital camo or usaf tiger scheme and you'll see plenty of examples of US military aircraft in a variety of special paint schemes. The question is, are any of them as cool as this one.
@USNavalAirForces11 жыл бұрын
Well, in emergence situations the tail hook can help with belly lands or short field landings. I don't think removing it will make any noticeable difference.

i dont know what the exact name of it is. but i know what its used for. its to identify aircraft at night during an interception. the hornet flies on the right side of an aircraft and turns on the light illuminating the other aircraft for positive identification. Airline, tail number that kind of thing. to my knowledge only the Canadians use it.
