I have the same problem with my 2 year old, Lily and I'm so happy that you did this video!! I'm going to start using these techniques immediately! It's hard for me to take Lily on walks because she pulls me and I have an old back injury, so it becomes painful for me to walk her. I really hope Lily does as well as this dog and I'll be so happy to be able to go on walks regularly because she needs it as much as I do!! Thank you!

At the shelter I volunteer at, teaching good walking skills is a big deal! Today, with Twizzler (probably a pug/pitt mix), I realized that I had accidentally trained her to tug on the leash and look back at me. In the past, anytime she'd tug, I'd slow down, and reward her and keep moving forward when she'd look at me. For a few weeks I got some really great loose leash walking out of her, but today (I took a week off)...she really outsmarted my system! Thanks for the wonderful tips! Going back and forth, and just stopping, sounds like something I need to try with these dogs.

So happy to hear that, Caroline! Hopefully you can use the tips in this video to train many shelter dogs in the years to come! Perfect practice makes perfect - for them and us!

I adopted a three year old doberboy with minimal training and high prey drive. I started with a martingale collar and was dragged around the neighborhood whenever he saw a squirrel. I was able to get him under control with a gentle leader and positive reinforcement, but still had to deal with his tantrums when he wanted to go chasing. The game changer was the e-collar. We had two walks and he never tugged again. Now he heels and recalls on command even if he has started to take off after a critter! It was hard work at first, but he is so attentive and obedient. I would definitely rescue again.

This is a nice switch up in content I love it. Also that lady is trusting as hell using a retractable leash for a dobie. 😅

The slip lead is used incorrectly, it's way too short and that causes the dog to be under constant pressure the entire time, which defeats the very purpose of a slip leash. If the leash is always tight, the dog won't understand the difference between walking near the owner versus walking far away, because doesn't matter where the dog is, it will always be unconfortable. The way it should be used is compeltely different, as the leash should be a little longer, soft and relaxed while walking, and if the dog starts to pull, the hadler should pair the behavior with a correction, this way the dog will understand that is way more comfortable to walk near the owner than to sprint ahead.

Totally agree.. in this way the dog get use to have the leash in tension as a normal thing, so it can happen that when you give him more leash the dog is moving until get the tension again

Interesting to see how the dog is focused on John and not on the owner. He is the boss in this trio. This scenario shows the importance to be the real leader of the pack. You can not really handle a Doberman only by physical power - you need the right mind set and self-confidence.

Thanks for this video! Any tips for lessening prey drive in a 6yr old rescue? Or leash reactivity in adult dobies?
@DobermanPlanet
@DobermanPlanet 5 ай бұрын
Both great questions! Although we don't have a video on it (yet) you can search "desensitization training" and that will help with the prey drive. Please send us a message on Instagram and tell us if your leash reactivity is to other people or other dogs and we'll be able to help more specifically!

The slip-lead around the neck or around the upper neck - it stays in place and does not slip down? I never used one , ever. I used the "choke chain", and I used a halter-collar/gentle-leader. The halter collar was better, because easier to use it to control dog, not stressful on the dog. Slip-lead I do not have any knowledge/experience. I had seen the veterinarian people used them.
@DobermanPlanet
@DobermanPlanet 5 ай бұрын
Yes, the slip-lead works well when used how it was demonstrated in the video. Give it a try if you're looking for a change!

People need to stop getting a harness as a first choice. Get the dog properly trained with an actual leash. She’s also reactive because the owner shows no signs of confidence.

Even though i don't have a Doberman yet there's some hope for me to get one. 12:11 It's just taking a lot because of the fact that I'm going thru a big case because I'm suing someone so I've been seeing Dobermans around my way and I've been seeing my dream SUV around town So anyways God bless you brother John and just keep up with what you're doing for the kingdom of Heaven with the encouraging words that you're giving right now because I'll be honest we truly don't deserve dogs because of the fact that we don't treat them right at all 🪽✝️🔥🙌🏻
