Finally! Someone explained the difference between full grain and top grain in a way that actually makes sense.

I'm curious, Chris-what are your thoughts on synthetic leathers like vegan leather? How do they compare to the real thing in terms of durability and feel?
@chrisdroberts4 ай бұрын
Well, the definition of a leather is basically a skin or a hide of an animal. The fact that genuine leather is a skin Hyde and his weathered and natural gives it extra strength and flexibility.. Anything categorized as a vegan or synthetic or pho leather would usually have characteristics of a plastic. It may be processed to have a softness to it, but the durability in my opinion based on experience would not even be close, especially the tinsel strength and terms puncture or rip strength. You may have a much more uniform look because there are no natural markings or grains to contest with, but that product would not breathe like genuine leather so you may also get hot while sitting on it as your body temperature will reflect back on you as it settles on the synthetic surface. Not a bad product, probably affordable and lots of design options, but certainly not in the same category as a leather . It is important to remember that at least Furniture or as it relates to cows, they are not harmed for their hides . Purchased as an industry and other guys gone to waste . Hope this answers your question!

You mentioned different leather tanning processes like brain tanning and chromium sulfate tanning. Are there any significant health or environmental impacts between these methods?
@chrisdroberts3 ай бұрын
Not that I’m aware of. Most tanning is done with salts today. Back in the day they even tanned with urine. Ugh…

Thats funny, thenks for the comment. Leather sofas do start at around $699 and up to 10K depending on the quality and type, that being reclining or stationary. And clothing is the same, price goes up from a low starting point based on quality and what it's being used for. .

What’s your opinion on buying vintage leather products? Are they worth the investment?
@chrisdroberts4 ай бұрын
@@donaldeaston441 in my opinion vintage or not. Leather is timeless and if you care for it you can literally own it for a lifetime. Vintage could have additional value to the buyer of there is a connection to a specific timeline. I would say that the processing back in the day was cleaner. In other words, less chemicals use when processing. Please share a pic in the comments of you buy something. Curious what you find. Thanks for the comment.

I am an animal advocate, and I think the way we harvest poor defenceless creatures for fashion is abhorrent - I think leather should never be used.
@chrisdroberts5 ай бұрын
I appreciate your passion for animals and agree with your comment. The leather described in this video is cowhide and is a byproduct of the meat industry. In other words, no animals were targeted for their hides. The hides are purchased after the fact so as not to go to waste. Keep up the good work you are doing for the animals.
