Glad you enjoyed it! I'm keen to look at more, once this sort of thing actually comes to market

I normally work with fabrics, I honestly didn't know there was a difference. Thank you!

This was such a cool comparison. I didn't even realize there was plant-based leathers. I've only encountered the plastic vegan leathers.

Glad I could introduce you! They're a very new niche product, but they seem pretty suited to certain applications. Just sadly not what I use leather for!

This was super interesting and informative to watch! Too bad you didn't know what it was made of, I'm really curious. But the development of plant based leather is really interesting to follow, curious what they will come up with in the coming few years, the real breakthrough will be leather that can be tooled.

I was surprised at how nice sample #1 felt to be honest; I had assumed that plant based leather was all very plasticky like sample #2. Glad you enjoyed the video! I'm also keen to see where this all goes

This was fascinating! Thank you so much for going through these. I've been curious about them, but haven't had much access. I wonder how painted edges would be since burnishing didn't go so well. It is curious that they couldn't say what plants the leathers were made of. It'd be interesting to see how one plant differs from another or if a blend is better.

I agree, I wish I had more data! Alas, it is what it is. I think that there would have to be methods to get a good edge, and probably methods to get texture onto them, but I decided to be unfair and limit myself to beeswax and water. I'm very interested to test more plant-based leather in the future

I've never seen plant-based leather in action (I've seen a product that is rather misleadingly called "tree leather" and it's basically super heavy brown paper -- would not recommend for use in garments lol But the wallet I have in it has held up really well over the last couple of years). My immediate thought towards the end was that some of the ones you tried might work really well for covers on hard-backed, hand-bound books, and now I wish I could get my hands on some to try in comparison to the suede and fashion leather I've used before for book covers :)

I've got a paper wallet that's lasted me close to a decade now, was not expecting it to hold up so well! And yes, while the plant-based leather "failed" in terms of being a veg-tan alternative, it can still be really useful depending on what stuff you make

I have sensory issues around the sound of things rasping together, and I can tell you numbers 2 and 3 were the worst on the sandpaper! I do have to wonder if maybe heating the plant based leather would allow for easier tooling?

Yeah they weren't exactly pleasant lol. I'm sure there's something I could do, but I decided to just try the methods that work on animal leathers, so maybe I'll try more later
