You mentioned “the man you apprenticed with”.. I’d bet that many of us would like to hear the story of how you got interested in leather work, and the journey that resulted in the skills and experience that you so generously share with us amateur enthusiasts. Thank you, sir!

OLD Leather Smith here, Hi Don I use a water or small soda bottle with a hole in the cap I like a 1/8 hole but hole size is up 2 U. I use it 2 spread the glue or if a drop is required that can B done easily. I make a funnel 4 my glue out of quart juse containers works great. Just some of the things I have made 2 use in my shop. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️🥎🙃

Something I do with anything sitting for a while, put a thin layer of thinner on top to seal out air, then mix when you open next.

You got me hooked on the Weldwood. Barge is just an all-around pain, so I was happy to get away from it.

Thanks, Don for great vid!! Will add, all your vids have been very informative, and extremely useful... also, as a newbie, and being disabled, money is tight trying to get started.. glue for example, is expensive.. seeing other glues, not necessarily sold at leather supplies, are cheaper and great to know it can be used, without sacrificing your leather.. hope you keep making vids!! Bout watched all of them, some several times!! Lol. Im fellow Texan, do you ever do , on-sight tutorials, like Aron at Makers?? Sure would enjoy watching and learning, in person!! Thanks, again . Have great day!

Thank you for introducing Glues as your professional use. If you use any Stain/Ink for pigmenting leather materials, want to see your instruction . Send cheers for you and your videos we used to watch.

I've tried the weldwood and do not like it, the odor is too much and the bond could be better, what I use now is 3M hi-strength 90 contact adhesive in a can, it is very low odor, very strong bond and is heat and moisture resistant, you can spray big areas but when doing small edges spray some on a piece of paper and apply with a cue tip or any type of applicator

I'm very sensitive to the fumes, so I use a water-based contact cement. I use the same blue topped glue pot. I had to take an extended break from leatherwork, so it sat for 2 years untouched. And I used it recently, it was still usable. I could probably thin it a little, but I got the liner on my wallet back, so I am satisfied!

I've been using renia aquilim water based lately instead of barge. I don't make saddles, my projects are smaller but it's been working real good and no fumes. It doesn't work however in one of those plastic glue pots as they don't seal enough and the glue will grow black mold.
@charlesabbott55638 ай бұрын
I use the one Renia sells and haven't had that problem.

Stir the glue. Weldwood has to be shaken or stirred. Read the can.

great video. very good information. i will have to look into that fancy glue pot with the blue lid. it seems the cleanest way to go. lol. and i love the idea of the big can and poking the holes to keep it easy to pour and clean from mess. great info. thank you for sharing.

I had one of the TS Boy glue pot for about a year and it leaked glue at the base. I use Weildwood glue and thin it with acetone, same as you. Worked great before it leaked all over my tool box. Trashed it and bought an off brand and had the same thing happen in a shorter time. I now have the Teflon lined glue pot and will not go back to a plastic pot with a seamed bottom.

I tried a 15.00 Amazon pot styled like the Renia. Leaked after one week. Glue all over my work bench. Just ordered a Renia to try. I will store it in a Tupperware bowl this time just in case. Fingers crossed.

I was using Weldwood thinned with Zylene.

That last pot is hit n miss. I've gone through 3 and gave up. There's a few youtubers that have mentioned having them leak and needing to store them in a tray. Most say they got another and it was fine. I had one that leaked so I returned it for another. The glue kept drying in it do I returned it again but the 3rd one also dried up inside over 2 or 3 days. Not completely dry, but more than any other container or pot ive had. I think I was just very unlucky 3 times. Most people love them even if they've had an issue with thier 1st pot. I'm considering a 4th attempt with one but find working from a small tin works fine. I also use a similar squeeze bottle for water based adhesive for small or light jobs. An old sriracha bottle. Works really well for wallets etc. It gives a small bead.

Why clean the pickle jar out. I like pickles, it might give the glue a better smell.😂😂
