Ever wanted to walk round as a badass an stimmt be protected? This is one way to do so. A relatively simple project for someone with experience. The most tricky part the the glueing of the helmet base. Please note, that it is designed to wear a cushion underneath so it has be be a bit bigger then your head.
Difficulty: medium to difficult Tools needed: basic to advanced
Recommended materials
- 3,5 mm (9 oz) veg. tanned leather
- 2,5 mm (6 oz) veg. tanned leather (only 2 straps)
- 7 x 10 cm (3 x 4 inch) of soft leather or strong fabric of any kind
- 6x Screw rivets
Tools: edge trimmer, cutting knife, burnisher, hole punch, leather carving tools, bone folder, clamps, sewing material, diamond shaped chisel, wing divider, glue, rivets, dremel like tool

This is such amazing work! I’m still rather on the novice end of leather crafting with a few western/cowboy style gun belts made. I haven’t put together any new in a while but I may just have to give something like this a try!

Kinda reminds me of the process of making a shoe from scratch. That's not a bad thing. I just never would have guessed there were as many steps in making a shoe, or the amount of skill it took. 😁

This looks amazing! Change up the "beard plate" a bit and give it some neck protection, and you'd basically have the guard helmet from Skyrim.

Approximately how much leather does it take to make this? I was considering a 4 foot x 6 foot piece I found online.
@NilsBeardfoot
@NilsBeardfoot 8 ай бұрын
That would be enough leather for 3 helmets, I counted the pages of the pattern and with 0.72 sq m incl excess you are good to go

Great video! Quick question: does the leather shrink after the gardening process? During initial measuring should I allow extra room for shrinkage?
@NilsBeardfoot
@NilsBeardfoot 10 ай бұрын
Thanks :) sofar I have not noticed any shrinking, as long as you stay below the 60*C you should be good :) however you want to keep some space between your head and the helmet for foam or another kind of cushion so make sure it is comfortable

It looks really great! Do you think that rivets could work with that pattern?
@NilsBeardfoot
@NilsBeardfoot Жыл бұрын
Thank you :) yes it could work too, but the big base peace should be sown together for the long strap piece that goes over the head be sure to bend the edges down in advance so it is more like a quarter pipe the you should be fine

@NilsBeardfoot

this is contact cement, you put it on both sides you want to glue together, wait 15-30 min and press them together, they hold directly and after 24h is has its max strength :)
