Just to make sure....the "flesh" side that you are applying glue to is the side that (if it was a belt) faces your pants, as opposed to the hair side that faces out? I've seen some strop-making videos where some use either side of the leather interchangeably. So, in a bit confused as to which side faces out and which side gets glued. I have a lot of leather belt material laying around that I never got around to tooling and carving.

Yes, the flesh side is on the inside. Sometimes it's referred to as the suede side. The outside is often referred to as the grain side, or the face side. The inner flesh side is easy to apply polishing compound to, however it is softer and therefore tends to round the edge of the blade faster. This is why I tend to roughen the firmer grain side and use that as a base for the polishing compound.

Where is your hammer from? It's such a nice looking hammer

Thank you. It's a Joseph Dixon saddlers hammer. One of the last to leave the factory before it closed. You can find them from time to time on eBay. The turned edge wrap was my own addition.

Hi Philip What are your thoughts on shell cordovan strops? I'm about 10 minutes into the video so apologies if you cover this.
@LeathercraftMasterclass
@LeathercraftMasterclass Жыл бұрын
I think they make nice strops for straight razors that don't use added polishing compound, but I doubt your craft knife will appreciate the difference. Once you add compound, the medium underneath matters less.

The only leather I’ve got available is from a leather jacket I’ve deconstructed..will it be thick enough or can I double it up by glueing together etc
@LeathercraftMasterclass
@LeathercraftMasterclass Жыл бұрын
The jacket will be chrome tanned leather, which is a little too soft and can cause accelerated rounding of the blade's edge. I recommend veg-tan leather, or at worst thick card.

Best thing you can do if you’re new to stropping blades is to take your time. Don’t start out whipping it back n forth like he’s doing. When you’ve stripped as many blades as he has, you can go fast too. Neil then, slow down. Maintain your angle, don’t run off the side of he strop, don’t try to add a little flair at the end of the stroke, just come to a stop on the leather at a good angle, lift it straight up and move on. Don’t press down hard. No need for heavy pressure. It doesn’t make it go faster it just rounds over the edge. Don’t over-strop. Keep the number of strokes equal or about equal on each side.

Hi Phil, thanks for the lesson. Would you suggest using Tung oil for hardening the leather ?
@LeathercraftMasterclass
@LeathercraftMasterclass 3 жыл бұрын
Probably not for this, no. I'd recommend that for a larger strop used for skiving knives.

Before I watch- 60min project? I’d love to know why randomly picking up a scrap of wood from your immediate surroundings and contact cementing it to some sacrificial leather, then cutting it out and rouging it takes 60 minutes

Similar to when you tell the Mrs you're going to 'make love all night' Michael. Sometimes we overestimate the time it takes to get the job done ;) Realistically, 60 minutes should suffice for people of all abilities, not everybody finishes early :D
