The first leatherman I saw was when I was in the IDF (its 1998-2002). My unit commander had one, very simple one but back then it was very cool. Since then I also wanted one. Then in 2000 something my friends got me a FUSE, loved it. Carried it with me everywhere. Until my eyes started to wander in the direction of the black Wave. Got me a blackout Wave. Then warrantied the Wave, one time in Israel and one time here in Germany (where I live now) they send me back the Wave plus, that I love very much, don't live the home without it (except the f'ing airports...) The moral of the story is, I carry my Leatherman every day, (almost) everywhere I go... helped me countless times, bicycle trip, cartrip, working as a rope access technician, landscape builder, now a tig welder... Also have the Freestyle that I don't carry as it has limited options. But love the build quality. Don't want any gerber or sog or other stuff...

I know I’m in the minority but I’ve had a Free P4 for the last 3 years, and it instantly became my favorite. I recently added some upgrades to it with ZapWizards bit holder and his sheath with the ratchet driver and some Wiha ultra driver bits and i think it’s just perfect that way. I carried a surge before that, but I find that the easy one handed access as well as everything being on the outside is fantastic.

I also prefer the P4 and P2. I had to break in the sticky pivots with liquid diamond stropping compound, but besides that I far prefer the free series to other leathermen and victorinox.

I started carrying the Leatherman PST in March 1989 on a military deployment to Honduras, Central American. Then again in 1992 to the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt for 1 year. It proved to be very handy in the absence of a proper toolbox. Fast forward to 2023, and I have a copy of just about each model produced since then. My current favorite is the Surge with both Bit Kits and the ratcheting driver. I do like the extreme smoothness and external access tools of the Free P2 and P4, but the lack of a bit holder is disappointing. So Surge it is for EDC.

I carry a surge at work everyday. Never leave home without it. I was a Gerber guy using my previously issed multitool, then I lost it and got pushed towards a Leatherman. I love the surge, it's beefy, feels like a solid tool in my hand.

Honestly I've tried most of the Leatherman lineup and out of all of them I carry the rev everyday, it's the cheapest option, it's light in the pocket, has everything I personally need and nothing I don't. Had served me well for 6 or so years now. The only thing I don't like is the wire cutters aren't replaceble and mine are damaged beyond usability. I could send it in and get it fixed or replaced but I don't use them enough to care

Leatherman OHT. Carried it in the service, used it for anything and everything. I think it's worked on or around somewhere between 40-60 AH-64 Apaches and UH-60 Blackhawks. Torched the casing with a ground connection on a generator when it fell into a splitter for the cable that was opened up. Was getting power to our little shitshack in the dirt, had a little heater we brought. Would have been real cold without it. Looks like someone took a welder to it but I love the damn thing. All the wear and tear, sentimental value. Buy it for life.

I edc a ST300 because I like the size and heavy duty use but mainly because of how the blades are formatted. I’ve had liner locks fail on me so I like the back lock of the st300 and Howe the blades positioned if the lock ever does fail the other side of the handle will stop it other than your hand. In that way I feel it’s more heavy use than the surge

Leatherman crunch! Locking pliers provide a third hand if you need it, wire stripers, full size hex reciever cleverly hidden beneath the adjustment screw for the pliers you can put any standard hex in, main blade is serrated to compliment the fact you are probably carrying a standard knife as well. They are the bomb! Very happy with mine.

My favorite Leatherman is the Rebar. Your Rebar seems stiff and cumbersome. Mine is nicely worn in. What I like about the Rebar: -Comfortable to hold, nice and sleek. -All tools lock. -Thinner than most of this size category, fits perfectly in my Maxpedition Micro. -Good pliers, and removable wire-cutters. -Two full length blades, plain edge and serrated. -Fixed Phillips driver. It also accepts the common bit adapters you find with cheap multi-tools. I do not like the bit driver with the flat bits. -Nice awl and flatheads. -Very aggressive file and saw. -Best can opener in a multi-tool. Absolutely top performance. -Compatible with tools from many other Leatherman tools. I've put a Wingman package opener and Wave scissors in my main Rebar. I have many Leatherman multi-tools, and other brand tools as well, but the Rebar has a special place in my heart.

As a diesel mechanic I use the snap-on branded ones made by Gerber quite a bit, not sure what model it equates to. It's an OTF style. I like the abrasive style metal saw on it that's interchangeable with other attachments, though I've never actually looked into getting different attachments for it. The saw is nice for quick burr removal.

I bought my first Leatherman around 2002. I used it daily as plumber but latter stopped carrying it. I pulled it out again about 4 years ago and started carrying it again. Then I found all the new models… I’ve tried almost and currently own 7 models. I’ve found that my favorite for edc is my charge with g10 scales. For camping/backpacking I prefer the surge and for emergency kits I like the surge as well. The squirt ps4 fits in an altoids tin survival kit. So many options out there.

I still have the leatherman Wave(2nd Generation) with the bit set in my long distance travel or work site, had 2 skeletools, Small electrical plier and normal plier models, the micra etc. The best part is t wave has one hand opening features which is very helpful at work site. They do have down side like the plier twist, when too much force is used to turn a stubborn nut or so. Wished it had a chisel like victorinox tool as it is very useful in many places on wood n Fibre work on boats. In quality n individual tool working design I prefer the victorinox in many ways. Leatherman has one of the best customer satisfaction index, I have got free shipping n tools under warranty here In India

I love my Leatherman Wave Plus. I replaced the blade with S30V, and this multitool goes with me everyday in my bag. I get a surprising amount of use out of it, particularly the pliers, scissors, and wirecutters. I thought I'd use the screwdriver more (and even got their bit set) but honestly am rarely in a situation where I don't have access to my regular screwdrivers. It's a great back-up tool to have!

I have numerous Leatherman models and I always seem to grab the Rebar. Mine took some time to break in as well. I purchased some of the recent final release Juice's and was pretty disappointed in the quality - seemed like QC rejects that Leatherman decided to sell. Either way, comparing the Juice models to the Rebar, the Rebar hands down is higher quality, built to better tolerances, etc. Now I'm wondering if I should buy another Rebar in case they discontinue it.

If I could only have one multitool for the rest of my life it would be the Swisstool Spirit X. I really like the Sideclip, it's really slim and has a great selection of flat screwdrivers - the best selection in any Leatherman. The one I carry every day is the Bond. It's useful to not have locking blades in the UK (...) and if I damage or lose it, it's not so much of a big deal compared to the Sideclip.
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 2 жыл бұрын
I'd get a Spirit X too but I'm in the UK like you so carrying options are limited to say the least, I do carry my Rebar in my bike tool repair kit, which is inside a pouch, which is itself in another bag, but it's still a bit risky legally...so I'll probably get the Bond too in the near future, carrying that with a SAK like the Farmer X (which has scissors and woodsaw) will give me the full toolset but in a UK legal format.
@tomcardale5596
@tomcardale5596 2 жыл бұрын
@@simonh6371 I think by the time it's in a pouch in a bag with some tyre levers in something that's clearly a tool kit you'd have to be a particularly vindictive policeman followed by jury to have any issue with that! I keep a fixed blade and a locking knife in my car, but that sort of fits in so I doubt will be a problem. It's a Defender with a lot of other related paraphernalia rather than a blacked out BMW. I was carrying my Swisstool on a lockdown walk when a complete stranger came up to me and asked me to fix his kid's bike. I was thankful for the very stout pry/screwdriver thing it has, I had a lot more confidence in that than I would have doing the same job with any Leatherman.
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 2 жыл бұрын
@@tomcardale5596 Yeah Swisstools are definitely better. You can get a Spirit X for less than the price of a Wave if you shop around. I only bought my Rebar as it was on sale new, but as a ''second'' (''engraving overwritten'' so a black rectangle on the blade which doesn't affect functionality a bit) for 50 quid. I'd never pay top whack for a Leatherman.

I have a wave +, sidekick and a wingman. If I’m using the sheath I love the wave. Also like the wingman with pocket clip. I’m like you, I use the pliers and the blade. Nice not to have to go into the tool bag. I just got a new wingman back from a warranty claim. Pocket clip gets loose and if you tighten it you can’t open for plier use. So they just keep sending me a new one. Carry every day.

I started with a Super Tool years ago. Great tool, but it's so heavy that it drags your pants down. Tried a Skeletool CX, a Juice C2, a Micra, and the Squirt PS4. I keep using the Squirt PS4 because it fits in the watch pocket of my jeans and is so handy. I even bought a backup for when I sent the original back for sharpening and a tune up. I have the Gerber out-the-front style which I like because it's easy to open w a flick. Bad news is that the jaws broke during an emergency out on the ocean. Gerber replaced it without question immediately. I really don't use it much any more, I'd rather use traditional pliers and a razor knife and screw driver, which packs into about the same amount of space.

For me it's been the Curl. I should preface this by saying that I have 0 need for a saw and 0 need for a file. If I need a saw I"ll go and grab the Pocket Silky in my car. But the Curl has been great. I actually removed the diamond file from it since I never use that. It's now just an ounce heavier than a Skeletool but substantially more capable, about 6 ounces. But it has all the tools I want/need without all the things I don't.

Nice collection there. I have the Leatherman Rebar and the wave plus, a victorinox spirit mx clip and I also have the Gerber MP 600 very similar with yours. On the compact size I have victorinox ones like the swiss champ and Minichamps. But in most cases my favorites are the Leatherman wave +, and the victorinox spirit mx. The next one would be the victorinox swiss champ and the Leatherman Rebar. I think the wave is a very good multitool, it is the most popular. The victorinox is very good as well, the finish is superior, all the tools are accessible from the exterior, every tool has its own little spring, the feedback is excellent when opening and closing them. The Gerber it was cheaper but I rarely used this one.

Carrying a Snap On 8-9 inch slip joint in a leather pouch on my belt, better pliers then my Surge, and I carry a Leatherman for the pliers. Tool pouch clipped to a belt loop, Knipex 7 inch Pliers Wrench and Alligator, 8 inch dykes and needle nose, Klein 10/1 screwdriver, Malco 7 inch locking pliers, 6 inch mill bastard file, Klein electricians' shears and a folding hacksaw with Lennox Fire Rescue Recip saw blades. I've improved on the capability of the UPT concept with better tools, in a pouch not that much bigger than my Surge. Without the pouch. I carry 6" versions of the pliers wrench and cobra (in my pants pocket), a SAK Farmer folder, a Silky 130 mm saw, some version of ESEE fixed blade and a George knives 8" Ti prybar. I forgot, a while ago, I decided to conduct an experiment. Is it possible to EDC fire making tools? Commonly, past 3 ways to make a fire, axe/hatchet, saw and knife. The ESEE preexisted. The 130mm Silky Pocket Boy, that lives in my left front pocket, was a happy mistake. I thought I was ordering a bigger saw. The fact that a Silky quality saw can live in your pants pocket, that will out cut both SAK and UPT. The last part of the trilogy would be the Granfors Bruk Mini when I have to or the Wildlife or Small Forest when I can. In my duffel bag that I take to and from work, in the outside pocket with the tool pouch is a semi sharp Vaughn Riggers Axe and a Snap On Demolition chisel. 30 years FD/EMS. And just for the sake of argument, a Snap On 7" slip joint plier fits in the right front pocket of the shorts I'm wearing, discreetly and comfortably.

I find that on the newer production "value" leathermans (sidekick etc), the tips of the pliers don't line up and have a lot of slop to them. I have an older model (over 20 years old) that has had a hard life, and the pliers have still maintained perfect alignment with zero lateral slop... I'd say that are more precise than even my newer charge and supertool. This level of tight fit and finish i think can only be found on the Swiss tools these days.

I have some Leatherman and a Spirit S from Victorinox. Think the big MTs are too heavy and cumbersome to always carry them with (and that’s the idea, isn’t it?). If I knew beforehand what tools I‘d need, I would carry the appropriate specialized ones, which always work superior. The LM Crunch is cool because of the locking pliers in that small format. Over all, the Spirit offers the best quality, but is already a bit big. Everything above that is no more pocket-carryable. The original LM PST was of the optimal size, though not perfect. Usually I carry one locking blade of 4“25 inches right pocket, a SAK with 3-4 Levels in the left plus a LM PS in the 5th pocket for small pliers. Knipex makes such awesome small pliers like the Cobras 125 or 150mm an also there is the 08 05 110, so the combo of one of those and a SAK proves way more practical than a plier-based MT.

My favorite leatherman in current production is the Bond, it's the only good thing they've done in 15 years in my opinion. Out of production, the Fuse. I just want compact simplicity on my belt at work, and I don't like the ugly modern style they have. All I really need is the pliers, awl, #2 and 1/4", a multitool is not a pocket knife. For non leatherman it's the Sebertool M4, one of the best multitools that was ever made and definitely the best mini " keychain size " ( don't carry on my keys ) multitool ever made. That's what I carry when I'm not at work, it's as much as I need because I have tools everywhere.. Nobody has ever come close to competing with Sebertool, or even tried to make a mini as good as what they used to make.

That's interesting to hear from someone in the USA (an educated guess as you refer to the Sebertool), I'm in the UK where the Bond is one of the few multitools we can legally carry but if it weren't for those laws I'd probably get a Wave for the outside opening (and locking) tools, or a Victorinox Spirit X. However the Bond is a no-nonsense design which is going back to the original PST so it's a good tool, just surprised to hear someone from the US confirming that!

Btw for me the best keychain/mini is the Nextool Mini Flagship...I have a LM Squirt PS4 but the Nextool is better as it has excellent scissors - more like the shears type you find on the Micra/Style CS - a longer profiled Phillips SD and a slightly bigger blade with better detente.

@@simonh6371 Just remember that not everybody is focused on having everything but the kitchen sink on their multitool. I have a tool bag in my locker at work and tools everywhere at home, so I just don't need a very complicated multitool. I like the idea of a multitool that can do almost everything, but it just complicates things and I rarely use the other things. All I really need on my multitool is pliers a couple drivers and the awl. Also remember that not everybody wants a modern one handed folder either. Around me if it's not a Buck 110 or old brown leatherman sheath on their belt it's a Case 54 pattern Trapper or 032 pattern stockman.

@@TylerSnyder305 I totally agree with you on this in fact, one should always use dedicated tools where possible and multitools should only be for when one doesn't have access to those, which should be very rare. For example I'm amazed that people carry them in their cars, because here in the UK everyone has a bag, roll or box of dedicated tools in the boot (trunk). Likewise tradesmen saying they use multitools! Really they shouldn't be for tradesmen but people who are on the move and occasionally need a tool, so can't carry a bag/box/toolbelt, e.g. cops, or for example a customs officer who is going into small cavities on a ship for example.

@@simonh6371 There are things on a multitool that you may not need enough to carry any other form of and I can definately see a tradesman carrying a multitool for those things, but that's it. Things like an awl or maybe file or saw, especially an awl that you'd otherwise need a cover for. Beyond that though people expect too much out of a multitool and use them in situations where they should have real tools on them, a multitool is an occasional toolbox suplimentation, not a go-to toolbox replacement. You just can't tell them otherwise though, they are adiment that a multitool is the only way and that anybody who would go grab a dedicated tool instead of using a multitool is a bad inefficient tradesman who probably likes to lean against a post while others work. ( I've been told this for my choice of bare bones multitools and preference for 2 handed slipjoint knives) I know people who aren't even allowed to carry a multitool where they work, because the company doesn't want them damaging fasteners on the machinery they work on or around, and I don't blame those employers one bit.

I've given up on "leatherman". Using the pliers with any hard grip is painful and I've broken the pliers on 2 separate models. I know they have a good warranty, but honestly these are mediocre tools. But if it's all you have when you need a tool, it's better than nothing. The blades are at least very sharp out of the box.
