I got the ratchet recently and after some use together with the Skeletool I could not be happier. I wish they will come up with a shorter version that could then be permanently implemented (or stoved when attached to the bit exchanger) in a multitool. That would be awesome.
@chimchu3232 Жыл бұрын
I ordered a 3d printed sheath that carries the ratcheting driver and 2 sleeves of bits. It would be hard to implement that into a skeletool though, imo if you need a driver extension and bits, you're better off sheath carrying a more capable multi tool like a wave or charge. I do love the skeletool, that's my go to if I don't wanna belt carry and have a bunch of extra weight I won't need

When I first heard about this I started working on my own because I assumed this would cost a lot more because its leatherman. I’ve managed to build my own using socket and hex adapters with a performance tools ratchet adaptor (the ratcheting piece comes with a lifetime warranty). Built it for around $15 bucks if you ignore the costs of prototyping stages. It’s a bit bigger but it’s all metal construction and I’m not worried about it breaking. I literally finished putting it all together the day they released the leatherman one.

Outsourcing is not really an issue for me, it’s finding the right company to outsource to. Wera outsources some of their stuff, and it is all pretty high quality. I get you point though. They need to tighten the reigns on the quality control, because if they don’t, it could really cause them to head in a downward spiral. My father taught me something a very long time ago. He said, “You can do a 1000 jobs perfect, but it is the one that you do wrong that everyone will talk about.” How true it is! Thanks for watching.

You seem to be quite negative towards Leatherman. I know they have had some quality issues as of late, but they are the best in the business. Unlike Victorinox, which brings a new model out about once every 10 years, they are pushing the envelope. So, I guess I don’t understand why all the hate towards Leatherman.

Wobble extensions or wobble plus like snapon and well...everyone has, for sockets ect, are a gift. That 10 or so degrees of wobble helps so much in a bunch of cases where you'd normally be going at it, MAYBE catching the nut/bolt but with them, you can get the angle and get a good grip. The wobble seems good, as long as its not a longevity problem

pretty strong price tag for what it is IMHO. I'd like to see them using a locking bit-holder on their extensions, as well as a locking mechanism when it's attached to the multitool - I don't know how often the bit or extension with the bit fell off when I retracted them.

I like to address a couple concerns people have about price, warranty and the amount of teeth. As far as the price, at $30 Leatherman tested the market and yes we will buy it at that price. Warranty reasonable for what it is and the amount of abuse "we" will give it. 45 teeth vs 60 or more, 45 allows for a bigger pawl and bigger teeth with the right material it should be stronger for the amount of torque that can be applied to it. The handles on the Leatherman Surge are 4 in Long when you put the tool into a pistol grip configuration it will apply a massive amount of torque compared to it the collapsed position. I would rather a $30 ratchet break then twist out my bit driver on my Surge. Great channel love your content

Thanks for the great review Ben! A lot of hate between the LM community because of the 'Taiwan' and dirt without even had it. I can say it's the accesorie of the year. LM don't even need to bring MT with the ratchet made the year. We need to remember this is a MT accessory this ratchet will not rebuild an engine or build a home. This tool will help you to apply more torque and more comfortable way to use bits. I like it, I dont see too many use but it's the tools that when you need it, you need it and $30 dlls make the difference to save you a pain in the moment. I rather had tools and never use them than need them and don't had it. saludos compadre! MB

I kind of expected that. I personally don’t have a problem with the Taiwanese manufacturing. But tensions are pretty high right now because of the political climate. What bothers me about people bashing on Taiwan and China is, a large number of those people still do their shopping at Walmart. It’s one thing to have those principals, it is quite another to live by them.

@@txtoolcrib 100% agree!!! ✌🏻 I try to support USA businesses but overseas quality it's good too. Just watch Victorinox, Knipex, Apple, Samsung, Wera, Wiha, Veto Pro Pac...and more. I bought my boots from Nick's Handmade, Whites Boots and Redwing Heritage all USA made but I had some premium quality from Japan and CHINA. Indonesia had super high quality too. Well, I like the ratchet. Not the high end quality or any NASA prototype, but it's. Efficient to torqu with the bits and more comfortable using pistol grib ( Ben terminology) doing more faster. At least the surge and wave I know can handle the torque. Im worry about the st300 the torque between frame and pliers it's flexible..
@txtoolcrib3 жыл бұрын
I’m going to try it out with the ST300 and Rebar as well.

Thank you for mentioning production in Taiwan. My brother-in-law is from Taiwan and has schooled me in the differences between "Made in Taiwan" to what he refers to as the "junk" that comes out of China. LOL Over the years I've found this to be true.

Taiwanese manufacturing is pretty good. Some big name companies manufacturer their products there.

Thank u for your reviews- always well done... i broke a spring extender on a oil pan bolt. It broke on the thin adapter side. The sight adjuster bit is made out of s7 steel. Im curious to knw if it is stronger since the rachet version is made of the same steel as the spring one?
@txtoolcrib3 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what the spring extender is on a oil pan bolt. Trying to rack my brain, but I just can’t place it. What I know about S7 steel, it is not the type of steel that would make a great blade steel, but is ideal for tooling as it has excellent impact and shock resistance. Usually in these tool steels you’ll find S7, D2, or A2. S7 falls right in between A2 and D2 for hardness if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the video, It's really hard to justify more than $20 for me on this if it has plastic parts. The normal driver/extension is also overpriced but you can get it on sale sometimes for $12-14. So while i have been waiting on the ratchet version, i don't think it's worth it. I can buy a cheap plastic ratchet combo driver and chuck it in my glovebox. and just use the normal extension one for EDC

Nice 1 Ben can't wait untill you test it on your next video at least been over the pond we can watch your vidz and see if it's a purchase we want to make you was right about the play though wow was a lot still even if it don't hold up I prob will get one lol just to say I got one as part of my rotation I think leatherman missed the trick on the p4 it's another tool I love /hate like juice cs4 had it ages can't open the inner tools with out it snapping or ripping me to bits lol was the s2 the same or do you have a magic trick in your arsenal mate to lossen that tool am thinking of binning it thanks again for all the amazing content followed you for ages all ways tell my m8s to watch the texas tool Crib 👍

Honestly, I don’t use the Juice series enough to wear them out. I do carry the KF4 sometimes, it is my favorite of that line. I wish I could be more helpful.
@deusexaethera3 жыл бұрын
The only way to get rid of the play in the ratchet assembly would be to mount the rotating components on ball-bearings, which would take up additional space. The ability of a product like this to perform well is fundamentally limited by its size.
@chrisclikks3 жыл бұрын
What I don't understand is this is about the size of a small ratchet driver such as the victorinox or topeak one. So why have this as a tool that only works with the multitool when for the same size pretty much you can have one that works standalone
@txtoolcrib3 жыл бұрын
It's a valid question. I think it is a matter of preference for the end user.
@chrisclikks3 жыл бұрын
@@txtoolcrib That's fair I personally like the victorinox one as a sorta cheater bar for a larger screwdriver
@txtoolcrib3 жыл бұрын
An added benefit with a stand alone, you can use the pliers as a backup.
@chrisclikks3 жыл бұрын
@@txtoolcrib Yea exactly there's always a benefit to having standalone tools because you can used them in combination.
@PreciStrike_963 жыл бұрын
This would be better if they used full metal construction and a sprag roller clutch mechanism. Maybe more expensive but will last forever, there's almost no backlash or actual racheting, and they can give it the 25 year warranty.

Would you recommend for going the standard extender for this rachet style? I plan on ordering a surge with the bit kit soon which extender would you more recommend?
@txtoolcrib3 жыл бұрын
Well, I’ve been using it just for the past 24 hrs, so I don’t have enough experience with it to know just yet. But, I do like the ratchet driver so far. The regular extension is a no brained. It is very useful. But this new extension might be a better option. I just need to use the other one for an extended period of time to be able to give you an informed opinion.

That ratchet driver has actually 44 theeth in it's mechanism. Not 45. Leatherman dosnt tell or list the max torque of ratchet. It can work with about 15 Leatherman tools that are now in production, including Surge, Wave/Wave+, the many variants of Charge, Signal and more. As you said and probably as the fans know , it wont work with the Free P series. Is it available in black oxide?
@txtoolcrib3 жыл бұрын
I’ve checked it 5 times, I get 45 every time. I think marketing might have made a mistake. I wish they listed the torque rating, I was really disappointed that they didn’t.
