The greatest threat to Leatherman is their unreasonable price and declining quality control.

I'm in love the SOG Power Access Assist, from the one hand opening, to the assisted opening...I love it, never had a problem with it. And yes, SOG has the most artistic mt designs.

i have the assist Access also. Good MT. I have the surge but i never like it. i think its somewhere in the drawer collecting dust. I prefer my free P4 and Arc over the surge anytime but my spirit plus is the best.

@@blade9292 I got that one too. Its often overlooked and bashed for the design of the blades, by the Mt snobs. I currently have it in rotation at my job. Use it daily, its a beast.

I have been using my Daicamping DL30 for since it has been released, and it's holding up extremely well, I used to for basically everything around the house since I have moved. By default it comes with a PH1 + PH2 double sided screwdriver, which fits even most smaller electrical screws. It also comes with various flatheads, not to mention that you don't have to baby your file, since it uses t-shank adapters. It comes with wireframe design, so the tool is suprisingly light for their size! The operation is silky smooth even after 6 month of no-oiling. It' such an amazing tool for 32 USD....... Probably the best price/value item that any handyman can buy, by far...

Daicamping DL line for the overall dollar for dollar value.They have retired all but one of my full sized multi tools.I'm happy with both my DL2 and DL30.Got a 32 bit cro van steel with extension driver set to compliment the DL30 for a total of about $48.98 that fits in my shirt pocket.Each tool has their own strengths over the other.They both however beat my SOG POWERLOCK Safety Cutter model hands down on the 1/4 in driver.The tension wire on the PowerLock adapter is garbage, it will always fall off sooner or later and that will never happen with the Daicamping line or Leatherman or a number of different brands and models.I've already had to make my own replacement tension wire 4 times with yesterday getting done making two for a total of 6 before typing this.And they have never sold the wire alone just the whole part.And I finally retired it last week after buying the SOG bit kit to complete it after 21 yrs of owning it.Also even though the covers on it are to make it more comfortable using them,it's counter productive in use taking more time to get to the tools when they claim their multi tools are geared towards first responders and L.E.O.s and military when time is of the essence.Never again will I buy any SOG multi tool with that tension wire adapter on it.All the best to you and others reading this.

Nice comparison. My (brass) DL30 is great but inexplicably it came with too long jigsaw blades which wouldn’t close, but I replaced them with shorter ones.

The swisstool X is still my favorite, had a 98`version of it for a long time and bought a black one (that victorinox modded and put scissors in it) and a modern silver one. The action is superb and every tool well thought out. If something should break there is the life time warranty and these things go for 70-90 euros slightly used where i live. The cutters from it blow modern replacable ones out of the water, they can cut nails no problem. (i had a Surge, that didnt cut nearly as good, tried a small steel chain, swisstool was like butter, small knipex struggled a bit and the surge just didnt cut it right)

I got that Bibury after seeing it in your videos and I LOVE it. The only thing I dislike is that the outside tools are super tight, so I've been looking thumb studs for it, but can't find any. Do you have any recommendations?

Victorinox is good if it doesn't work. But with active use, all tools wear out a lot. At Leatherman, every tool is easy to purchase and replace. And that's worth a lot.

I like my silver Bibury Pro, although I had to exchange the first sample due to multiple QC issues. I paid $42 at Amazon with a 30% off coupon several months ago. Today it's just $36 with a 40% off coupon. It's hard to beat at this price, as long as you get a good one.

A lot of the tools you have shown, do come close to the functionality of the Surge. They just are not quite there. The Surge’s downfall is the cost. I purchased mine when they were still $99, at that time I thought it was a little over priced. Now at $150, it is ridiculous. The prices LM is now charging will suppress some purchasers, I don’t think they are going away but, it’s going to hurt the bottom line.

I have the Beta and I think it's a great tool with new inventions. But: i cant find any cutters to replace. I think there is no spare part for it. I asked Beta Germany and the don't find a replacement for the cutters in their system. So replacable cutters without spare parts are like no replacable cutters I think.

Funnily enough for me with SOG, it's a toss-up between the assist and the Deluxe (such tiny blades on the deluxe and the pull cutter on the assist speaks to me). The surge clones are probably THE best cost effective multitools on the market but there's just something about their pliers not having springs and/or gears that just leaves me wanting. Gerber probably doesn't get enough credit for their bit drivers, slide out pliers and prying implements but until they fix their cutters as well they'll still be relegated to honourable mentions. Still checking on the roxon site daily for the flex preorder spreading though ... that's my dream right there. ¦D

Actually there are things that the surge or any other multitools doesn't cover and this is where the other brands shine a lot. The surge is one of the very best Leatherman tool. So now the clones are quite biting it. But to me the original novelties tend to offer something.
@nitric75
@nitric75 2 ай бұрын
for me clone will always be clone. That's one of the reason i like Roxon - nice innovation and distancing itself from all these clones.
@blade9292
@blade9292 2 ай бұрын
@@nitric75 I tend to prefer innovation as well and a lot of chinese brands have creative models. But when I see pretty much an attack of the clones and they sell pretty well, it means a lot of things. The surge and wave are very good designs in general. But I think Leatherman is selling them with a too high price. I don't know what costs Leatherman to make them, but I don't think it costs 130 to make and they sell the stuff at 170... But as far as innovative brands there is nice things. I tend to buy Roxon and Nextool. Roxon is probably the best in terms of original designs. But to me the bests designs are. The black knight from nextool, the storm from roxon and the DL05 from GHK. They all have features I don't find in a Leatherman or any other big brand. Big pliers and scissors. A way to use 1/4" bits a competent wood saw a descent knife. While you can get the knife, the saw, much better files, and even better pliers from any big brands. They have at best medium sized scissors. Now to tell you I still haven't got my ideal multitool or rather set of multitools and so does many people. But I would love to see something made more towards. professionals.

@@hvacbudget8600oh so that is the trick. Its a no brand tool distributed by diferent labels. So how bad is the steel vs the latherman?
@hvacbudget8600
@hvacbudget8600 2 ай бұрын
@@trowawayacc That is a tricky question. So relying on some online knife charts these budget blades are 7cr13mov which gets 19 points vs Leatherman's 420 HC which gets 26 points. On things like toughness etc, it's like 3 points for 7cr13mov to 5 points per category for 420hc, easily the winner. In real world practice one needs to heavily use "abuse" their tool to notice a huge difference.
