After decades of casually looking for morels, and just recently getting committed to being more serious about it, I've watched over a dozen videos on tree identification. They all leave much to be desired, usually giving me no clear or useful information. This video was the first one that was clear, concise, visually informative, thorough, descriptive, etc. The comparisons were an excellent touch that really made a big difference. This is absolutely the Most informational video I’ve ever found on the distinction between tree species relating to the morel season. Normally I watch one of these videos and I’m more confused at the end then I was when I started now I’m absolutely positive I can see the difference between the trees thank you so much

We are fortunate enough to have morels on my property, about 20' from my kitchen. Tees in that area: 2 American Elms, 2 ornamental cherry, 8 crepe myrtle, a pine and a tulip poplar about 40' away. There is also some english ivy and azaleas.

Newly on this side of the country. Tulip poplar.....as soon as it began to get warmer, I noticed the puffs of white flowers. A whole bunch of elms blooming like crazy. Lots of creeks and woods here (YAY!) FROM Pennslvaia; now in Virginia. Time to take a hike. I've noticed strips of cloth hanging from some of the trees. Makes me wonder; I'd tag one to remember next year.

@@Leatherwoodoutdoors2 Hi John, 40 years+ ago I worked on The Allegheny National Forest for the US Forest Service and lived outside Marienville in Loleta Recreation Area, loved that area up there, it feels so insulated from the busy areas of Pennsylvania, would go shop for groceries once a week in Clarion. Great Fishing up there, such a really nice area, you are so versed in the outdoors, you have picked up a lot along the way, you must of had some very good mentors too. My Grandfather taught me a lot and so did my Dad and I thank the many others also that kept drilling the trees and ferns and wildflowers into me. Mushrooms I was always told to stay away from. Got to mention the huge Black Cherry trees that are up there. The Forest Service would always paint a big capital S on them and collect the seeds. I understand they don't do that anymore. Will look forward to more of your videos and wish you and Danielle the very best.

Shroomers in my neck of the woods find the mother load of morels around red elm (the heart wood looks like walnut) . Around here we’ll find many pounds of early grays and whites in bottom lands along creeks where the silver maples grow ,(the thicker the better),in a good year these places will produce morels for a couple of weeks, then around the first of may you can find the big yellow ones around the big live sycamore trees next to the creek. If you’re a novice,hunt the creek bottoms keep your eyes peeled as you walk and you’ll find em,remember to get permission before you go on private property,offer some of your find sometimes works !

Locust also looks very similar to walnut. Never found a morel by either tree. Dying and recently dead elm is like a beacon 👍

Thanks for the informative video! I also love morel mushrooms which I used to look for when I was a kid back in Algeria (Kabylie Region). Just out of curiosity; when the Elm trees start flourishing, we used to eat the fresh seed pods (best natural popcorn ever)... Have you guys in the States tried anything like that?

A lot are found around cedar trees in Oklahoma. I personally have noticed finding them around silver leaves. This does include Elm.

Ramps or wild leeks should still be good up there but there is also a chance for the oyster mushrooms to come out too. We have a video on oysters too.
