There are some very isolated places in Australia where tourists love to visit but numbers are limited by the availability of accommodation. The same would apply in Greenland if it opened up more to tourists. I do think tourism could be a less destructive source of income than the major alternative, mining.
@JustSomeAussieGamer
@JustSomeAussieGamer 2 жыл бұрын
120%, tourism, especially if its organized & regulated like some of the smaller islands in SE Asia are, is gonna be less destructive than mining. Hopefully its something that can be changed in the future, as a lot of these remote places have airports/airstrips due to the remoteness, so all they'll need is Terminals & Tourist Amenities.
@rais1953
@rais1953 2 жыл бұрын
@@JustSomeAussieGamer All towns in Greenland are accessed only by air or by sea because the geography makes roads joining them impossible. They generally have airstrips or helipads. As you say, access for tourists just requires some organisation and some local accommodation.

Excellent video. Thank you deeply for highlighting the potential issues with the runway expansion and further opening up of Greenland, as I believe it to be one of the biggest mistakes ever made in Greenland. I’ve taken this flight (albeit to RKV on Air Iceland) and its usually an hour longer going westbound rather than what you did, going eastbound!

Interesting that my wife and I just returned from Greenland/Iceland a couple of weeks ago. I was following your channel when this video popped up. We actually did a round-trip to/from KEF direct into NUUK on an Icelandair Dash8-200. It's a fine aircraft for short (i.e. 1 hr) trips but 3 hrs is a long time. Too much noise and vibration even though we had seats 1 C and D. That said, I do like that Greenland is still "hard" to get to. My wife and I stayed in "old" Nuuk with the colorful houses near downtown. Views were gorgeous! Everything was surprisingly modern; not a harsh place at all, at least in the summer. And winding through the Fjords after takeoff back to KEF was a magnificent experience! So yes I think the extended runway and the accommodation of larger jets is regrettable even though it will be much more comfortable.

As a Canuck, I can't tell you how many Dash 8 flights I've taken especially living out west where this is basically half of all aircraft with 737's being the rest. NWT uses plenty of Dash's and ATR's to access all those tiny Northern gravel runways that would destroy most jet engines without that modify kit...

Amazing. What a beautiful part of the world. The isolation is the attraction I think. There has to be some sort of limitation on tourists. I would hate to think in a few years you would be rubbing shoulders with many others on the hill behind the airport to take in the view. Tourism brings prosperity true, but it has a lot of down sides. Really enjoyed the video Josh. Take care. Mick🇬🇧

As long as they limit the numbers tourism could be a good source of income for Greenland. The country can never be a cheap destination like Bali or the Caribbean but well organised and catered tours for tourists prepared to pay the price could be a major industry for this small population without much strain on the environment.
