Leaving on a Jet Plane [John Denver]

Staff Sgt. Megan Pomales and the Six-String Soldiers perform one of John Denver's most well-known songs, Leaving on a Jet Plane, written by Denver in 1966 during a layover at Washington Airport. Denver's father, Henry John "Dutch" Deutschendorf Sr., was an officer and pilot in the United States Army Air Force, and Denver himself was an avid pilot who loved to fly.
The photo at the beginning of the video shows paratroopers of the Army's 101st Airborne Division, the “Screaming Eagles,” boarding a C-141 on December 13, 1967 headed to Vietnam for Operation Eagle Thrust-the largest and longest air movement by the U.S. Air Force of U.S. combat forces to Southeast Asia. We dedicate this performance to all of our Vietnam veterans.

1968 SOUTH KOREA DMZ, Camp Dodge, across the River. In our hooch we played this on our reel to reel for hours and hours. Freezing cold outside. No water to shower with. Toilets were a 55 gallon drum with a lid. Eight guys in a Quonset hut we called the hooch. For heat we used a diesel stove with some gas mixed in. I had my parents ship me an electric blanket. I gave it away when I left in January 1969. That was my life’s greatest adventure being in the army. Those were my real brothers instead of the “family” of social discards I have now.

Sgt.Megan and everyone played John Denver`s song very nicely. And I remembered this song that J.D. sang at his first consert in Japan a long time ago. At that time, I took a day off from school to go to his consert. I was moved to tears by the nostalgia. Thank you so much for the Six-String Soldiers.
