Finally, Dan talked about Cubans' hate for other Latino immigrants. Nothing new and known among the Latino community. There is a reason, when Cubans talk about their struggles. Other latinos roll their eyes... Basically, they got a free pass due to the USA foreign policy when it came to immigration

Cubans don't "hate" other Spanish-speaking immigrants...they just don't buy into the Anglo invention of the term "Hispanic" or feel any sort of group identity with people outside of the Caribbean. And why should they? Because the US government decided to create an ethnic category called "Hispanic" in the 1970s?
@RichD2024
@RichD2024 Ай бұрын
As a Cuban I can tell you it's not hate, it's that many Cubans think they are superior somehow to other Latinos. They think their music is better, that somehow they are more hardworking than other Latinos. It's ignorant and stupid, but that's really what it is. It's not hate, it's arrogance.

NOBODY gets a free pass in America. Wanna know how Cubans got these “privileges”?! -). They’re solidarious, despite you seeing them quarrelling with each other in Hialeah or Versailles, -). Those who came first, in 1959, places themselves in key positions (law, finance, medicine, etc) to have a voice and lobby properly. Contrary to many other immigrant groups, a Cuban doctor will become a better doctor in the US, no matter how long it takes. Now, that Miami Cubans are perceived as racist and classists?! Well… 💅🏾💅🏾

Before Obama was president of the United States, he said in a television interview ("60 Minutes" with Steve Kroft) that he considers himself a "mutt" (another way of saying mulatto / moreno / mixed race). Obama added that society in the United States views him as black because he was born with more features from his father than his mother. That means racism is part of society in the US and is institutionalized in the States. Now, in another interview Obama said the reason he will continue to say that he is black (even though he said he considers himself a mutt (mulatto/moreno/mixed)) is until white people in the US start saying that they are mixed too. You can even find recordings of some of his presidential press conferences during his presidency where he jokingly says that he and his dog, Bo, are mutts.

Good point. But sadly my brother those in the 305 will never have that conversation, and cognitive dissonance has a lot to do with it. I'm Afro-Bahamian/Cuban/Barbados. Yes it's a thing😂. And I was working in Miami a few years ago and a fair complexion Cuban lady said to me I don't understand their struggles!! I just laughed and said to her my great-grand mother was born in Santiago de Cuba and migranted to Key West 120 years ago and met and married my great-grand father ( a conch) and moved back to Nassau and had 10 children and the rest is just ancient history. Nope I'm clueless to struggles.

They help move the country right and push more anti-immigrant attitudes while they themselves enjoyed fast tracked citizenship and never had to live under regular INS raids, patrols, checkpoints and deportations like my parents and family did. And this was all happening in Northern California all the way to the highways near the CA-OR border because INS knew they were all traveling seasonal migrant workers. We didn't have the luxury of a Miami political bubble while being the favorite immigrant group of the most rightwing party in the country.

I've always found it amazing that the fervor of anti-Castro Cubans almost led to nuclear war. They sparked the attempted Bay of Pigs coup in the early 1960s. That spooked Castro enough to get the Soviet Union to supply him with nuclear weapons, which brought on the Cuban Missile Crisis. In short, a bunch of pissed off Cuban landowners could have caused the end of civilization as we know it.

Ramos is just touching the tip of the iceberg. I'm a 53 year old Cuban-American, born and bred in Miami, and very much a product (and dissident) of the community that shaped me. My father's side were Batistianos and my mother's were Fidelistas who, like many, would soon find themselves disillusioned with the direction and excesses of the revolution. As per being far-right, the old elites that were the first to flee and establish themselves as the new local elites were also rightists and even moreso, and more accurately, anti-communist reactionaries, longing for the status quo ante, and fueled by the rhetoric of the cold war that conflated any talk of worker's rights, civil rights, and anti-imperialism - any attempt to curb the power of the most privileged, with the ideology of their mortal enemies (actually the enemies of their masters). They are the descendants of the old anexionistas and their pro-US attitudes were multi-generational as well as reinforced by US media/soft power. They shaped and cemented the worldview of Miami to match their own. They control the one-sided local spanish language media and therefore the narrative - from Armando Perez Roura and Radio Mambi to Pablo Raúl Alarcón and SBS to Alex Otaola and his KZbin channel. The result is a Miami that has always been a haven for right-wing dictators, thugs, torturers, and criminals (and their useful idiots). Of course Miami would provide fertile soil for the politics of extremism, or more accurately, reaction. What Cubans are to US immigration in the late 20th and early 21st century is basically the same as what Italian immigration was to the late 19th and early 20th century. Very, very similar communities with similar politics. Both made up of immigrant who over time were willing to ignore just how despised they were in the past and even more willing to trade in their relative whiteness for entry into the expanding tent of American whiteness (and all it ideologically demands) in exchange for all the perceived privilege and power inside. True, there's the political component of immigrating because of communism that makes Cubans different, but that reasoning doesn't hold up much past the 90s where the dominant motive becomes poverty (interestingly enough much of it actually made worse by US sanctions and trade restrictions - which most refuse to acknowledge). And let's not forget the sense of entitlement and privilege that is further encouraged by the Cuban Adjustment Act (itself one may argue another example of white privilege Cuban immigrants enjoy and no one else does - even those fleeing other communist countries) which encourages Cuban emigration and implicitly props up one group of immigrants over others. The racism, machismo, anti-intellectual open hostility to "left" politics (it doesn't take much to be labelled communist here, which only shows how low-info and emotional many are with their definitions. I won't even get into how often they contradict themselves when comparing party with policy [an ongoing FIU study consistently does that] ) is already there. All a demagogue like Trump does is provide them a vehicle to unapologetically express their lesser selves. Again, if you study the Italian immigrant story of the last century, you'll get a picture of the future of the Cuban immigrant story.

Great that you guys have Ramos on as a guest. I would caution that this trend is not unique to Hispanics, or Latinos, or Cubans. While not as prominent, this trend of nativism through assimilation is present and growing in almost every minority community within North America. A lot of it has roots in that “not certain where you fit in” anxiety that Paola describes.

I of course born in Miami am very American and was only ever accepted by black/Caribbean communities here. White Cubans have always erased us and I can see in Enrique how he didn’t even know how to racially identify because racism is really rampant not only in Cuba but in all Latin American countries. I can go on and on about this topic. Cubans have always been privileged with how they have been allowed to immigrate into this However, I still will not understand how someone that is well researched about Donald Trump can even look his way. You truly have to be not only born in America but watched tv in the 80’s to understand his back story and how he is a threat to America. I also don’t understand people fleeing countries where their rights are taken away wanting to come here for the same. I never thought in 2024 we would be in this mess

Spanish media has a lot to do with the abundance of right-wing Latinos, at least here in Miami. The mainstream media here in Spanish is very right-wing and there is no MSNBC equivalent to balance it out. Compound that with every horrible thing that the likes of Trump say gets filtered, so the Latino audience rarely gets to hear things from the horses mouth and many anti-Latino things said are simply never reported. The lighter skin you were the more rights you had. That colonial mentality is still present among Miami Cuban and the Tejanos in Texas. I grew up in NJ. Jersey Cubans are not at all like the Miami Cubans whose families came to the U.S. before the Mariel boat lift. “Anglo” Cubanos didn’t associate with the “Marielitos” who they saw as lower class and uneducated and thugs. I can't help but think of what Paola said about Enique Tarrio. She described him as an Afro-Latino that never really felt like he fit in with other Latinos in his community growing up. This sense of not fitting in left a void in him that drove him to fringe groups that would accept him and helped weaponize his anger and resentment. I am in no way making excuses for the leader of the Proud Boys, nor do I agree with him in any way. But I do understand what it feels like to be a Mexican-American who because of some small thing was made to feel disconnected to my people in some way. We all know Latino's that do not always feel connected to their culture or heritage for some reason. Maybe its not speaking Spanish, or growing up in an all white community, or for me looking more Filipino than Mexican. Whatever it may be, can make many of us feel disconnected. I am not going to get into politics, what I am getting at is that maybe instead of getting into arguments with Enique Tarrio, or someone like him, we need to invite them over for a meal. Show them what it feels like to reconnect with their gente again. I know this seems naive and it probably won't solve anything, but I think it is a start. All Latino's need to start thinking of ourselves as one gente. I mean it as a message of empathy and a way to think of how when we see someone we disagree with, maybe we can try to think about what their life has been like and maybe extending some kindness and an olive branch could make a difference and help them change their ways over time. Just something to think about.

@@wilber2k06 Unfortunately in the US, historically, any self identification associated with the racial spectrum has had political, ideological, and sociological connotations for all individuals. It has been part of the social contract for centuries. And that's even worse for politicians like Obama, whose racial mixture wasn't well understood for the common American who mostly knows about white, blacks, brown, and yellow people and not that much about their combination. Social institutions force us to do that. If, as a Cuban, every single official document that I have to fill out forces me to pick Hispanic/Latino as my ethnicity (a big mistake), and choose between white and black or Afro American, being myself 75% white and 9% black (according to my DNA test), which would be the most logic / accurate pick? Race is a big issue in this country that, same with racism, hasn't being properly approached. And Trump has known how to use it in his favor politically.

@@oscarenriqueavalosboitel5222 You have some good points, but I have a different take. Some minorities (I'm not generalizing) in the USA are doing the work of a small group of rac!st white gringos which is adopting the "one-drop rule" then exporting it to every country. That's why some suffer from Stockholm syndrome; meaning some have been oppressed for far too long that they are sympathizing with their rac!st captors. Now, what should be the options available on an application or census form for immigrants south of the USA border or off the coast of Florida? That's up for debate. But one thing I'll tell you, I'd rather select Hispanic than LatinX. My view is that it should be just two boxes on the census, citizen and non-citizen; that's it.

Just a reminder that being a democrat or conservative doesn’t make you far left or right or a bad person. While it may be disappointing to see your candidate lose it won’t be the end of the world! Politicians use fear to sway votes their way and it’s been that way forever. And now there’s more money being poured in to it than ever. More people being paid to influence candidates than ever. There’s more good than bad people in this country and when push comes to shove most people will do the right thing. Regardless of what you see on social media, which isn’t a real place and a minority of our population. If you find yourself getting frustrated or worked up just check out for a couple hours, a couple days or a couple weeks and don’t forget to take care of yourself with some light exercise and good food. We’ll be okay people. If someone attacks you for your beliefs just remove yourself from it and remind yourself that the individual is probably overwhelmed by political information and doesn’t have the tools to handle it effectively. Be kind!

This is what find interesting…. All those Cubans, because YES, Cubans in Florida somehow feel more entitled to this country. All those Cubans whining about “people coming into this country with no documents” should also be complaining about THEIR FELLOW Cubans coming into this country; regardless of the wet dry program. Because they get permission only because of the LBJ program, not because they attained the privilege of being here. They get here by a “universal luck”, that’s it. They are NOT residents, they are NOT citizens. So, if Cubans protest about illegals immigrants. Also complain about new comers from Cuba, whom by the way are getting a lot of accommodation also from our government in Mexico. Stop being so righteousness, and just be grateful that you are fortunate to be here.

I’m not a hater, but I have critical thinking and, that’s how I notice things, and, by the comments you can see is many of us who have felt it. Floridians Cubans, are just like Texans Mexicans.

Because is the very same thing that happened to Mexicans in Texas. And I hope you see the pattern; both have it easier than the rest. It’s crazy to think that a Mexican has to wait up to 20 years to get a chance for residency, and central and South Americans are close to that, when Cubans get a huge break as soon as they set foot on this country. That’s why I said, if we are complaining about people coming to this country and “taking our jobs, and housing, and resources”…,, Don’t these Cubans getting a free pass add up to that number?

Around minute 14:00 the answer is easy, as a Venezuelan that's been here since the early 90's and has succeeded as a professional in South Florida I've heard from other Venezuelans, Colombians, Argentinians, etc.. Especially those like Paola said "fair skin and more European complexions" saying the same thing... "I am not like them..". I remember the first time I heard that in a corporate meeting down in Miramar, where I was so disgusted by the Cubans and Colombians at the table that I had to excuse myself from the meetings. A while ago I saw a meme that said "The worse enemy of an immigrant trying to succeed in life, it's another immigrant that has .." You want to talk about lack of resources, and having waves of immigrants to accommodate them.. I can have that debate, I would have a left debate in favor of it, but I would understand a right approach to it You want to talk about assimilation to the culture, well, I am even willing to go to that conversation, but when naturalized immigrants, or even first generation immigrants talk about the rest of the Latin community trying to better themselves as bad, then it just makes me sick to my stomach.. Bravo Paola, I just ordered your book online and recommended it to all my MAGA South Florida friend on their social media platforms.❤

Its kind of wild how little Americans know about history, geography etc Its pretty simple theres a couple of reasons: 1) Latinos are not a race, we are not a monolith. We come in all shades. There are the darkest of dark and the whitest of white and some REALLY believe that shit. This leads to.. 2) Colourism. Central and South America is rife with it. Ask Afro Dominicans in NY if they’re black and they say no we’re Latino. You can be both. They have a saying, “Mejorar la raza” Racism/colourism in Latino America is rife. 3) Specifically Cubans, vote extreme right because of their or their families lived experience. Whether I agree with their political views and how they view historical facts is separate. 4) Lastly, theres the “kicking the ladder” or “pulling up the ladder” phenomenon that happens with immigrants which instead of helping those behind them they get here and feel like I don’t want what Ive received to be diluted so we’re good after me. We complicate things so much

My one thing with Afro Latinos saying they aren't "black" is, only in the U.S. do we say oh yea "I'm black, white, Asian, etc" The world doesn't do that.... They will mention their Nationality like Dominicans do. Go anywhere else like Asia, Africa, Europe. Asians won't go to another Asian countries and just say "I'm Asian" 😂 Like obviously we can tell someone is Asian but what country are they from? That goes for Europeans and Africans too.

@karinaz8756 Have you even ever set foot in the South? It doesn't sound like it. If you had been to the South you'd know two things: 1. You're much more likely to be a victim of violent crime there at the hands of a black than at the hands of a white. 2. The level of racial tension in the south is nearly nil compared to NY Chicago LA etc. In fact, the extent to which there is racial tension in the South is more a result of the nationwide cultural influences of woke urban centers like Chicago and New York than anything home grown. Go see Am I Racist by Matt Walsh in theatres. You'll see that the people Matt interviews in the South, black and white, are very sane compared to the race hustling DEI experts he interviews in and around urban areas in the north.
