Pretty sure he won the first ever 3 point shoot out with a total of 23 out of a possible 30. That's a tick under 80%. Bear in mind the 3 point shot was introduced in the NBA in '79, Larry's rookie season. That means he played all through high school then college WITHOUT EVER shooting for 3s because there was no such thing. For many seasons, TEAMS averaged fewer than five 3-point shots per GAME in total; yes, the whole TEAM.

The 17 Point Was In The 3rd Round. They Went 3-Rounds & Sometimes Had To Do An Extra Between 2 If They Tied. Larry Has Shot 22 & 23 Points In His 1st & 2nd Rounds In His 3-Years Of Winning. There Is A Video On Here Somewhere Where You Can Watch All 3-Years & It Shows All 3-Rounds In Each Year. Also It Shows The Other Shooters Battling It Out To Get To The 3rd Round. It's A Good Watch.

In the last 3 Point contest Larry Bird missed a bunch on purpose and he had to make 8 out of 10 Shots including the Money Balls. Just like Danny Ainge said he was just making it a challenge for himself.

The three point contest you are talking about is only the third three point contest till then there was no three point line guys now have been shooting three point shots their entire life but then that was only the third year of having a three point line.
