they didn't leave him open, he got himself open. What a lot of young viewers don't understand is that you had to guard Bird differently because of his passing, his faking ability and his ability to shoot left handed.

Lots of reactors say, "In today's game...," like they don't understand that if Bird, and others, had grown up in today's era they would have had the same advantages that today's players have (medicine, training, diet, etc.). To me, that's just one more reason he's NOT a contender. He has WASTED all that "longevity" coasting and selling his shoes. He might be a GOAT shoe salesman but not a basketball player.

Watch Bird’s passing video, re-edit with new footage. It’s transcendent. Founded the 50-40-90 club and did it twice. Stayed with one team and helped make four of them Hall of Famers. I’m 74 and 80s’ basketball was talent-rich and exciting to watch. I’ve not had that feeling since: certainly not today’s NBA. It was about TEAM work, not showboats jacking threes. This NBA is a circus, not basketball. Those of us like-minded Bird fans will never be convinced otherwise. Never.

I always love watching games from that era as opposed to games from today. Back then guys were so decisive with the ball - the BBIQ was clearly several levels above. As soon as players caught the ball they already knew what they were going to do and would be getting ready to do it on the catch. Today guy just dribble, dribble, dribble until there's 7 seconds left on the shot clock, at which point they either force a bad shot or start playing a desperate game of hot potato trying to find somebody open.

first of all I was just correcting the 4-0 stat nothing more. I actually have MJ and Bird as my co- GOATS for the record though both Mchale and Parish have said they wouldn't have been in the HOF if not for Bird. Bird did not have either of those players or Ainge, DJ, or Walton when as a rookie he took a team that was 2nd to last place with only 29 wins and won over 60 Bird is the only player in history to do that. MJ didn't win any Titles without HOF players on his team and not until after Bird retired. BTW I am NOT a Celtics fan. But when you have both MJ and Lebron picking Bird in their top 3 and worthy picking Bird over Doc that is saying something. and unlike you and me, they should know .@@cobra7282

Not only did Bird have better stat lines, he did it when they played alot tougher defense and when the starters played 82 games a year. There was no 2nd night of a double header off. The other thing not in the stat lines is that Bird had a bad back from like 85 on. He would have to work constantly to keep it from stiffening up. That is the numbers part, here is the other part young people who didn't see him live won't understand. There was not a worse feeling in the world than your team up 1-2 points with Boston having the ball and under 5 seconds. You knew who was getting the ball, the entire other team, arena, announcers and fans watching all knew who was getting the ball, and even with all of that, Bird hit clutch shot after clutch shot. I don't like goat talk because I think you look at position by position. There is no one better at SF than Bird. Hands down, no debate. Same for Jordan at SG, Wilt at Center. Those 3 are so far ahead of the competition, you don't even have to debate it.

Look at these game highlights, they're grabbing, pulling, shoving holding and this happened all the time. I'm 45, I've had the pleasure of watching some of the greatest players of all time at Madison Square Garden, Michael Jordan to me was like an alien, he did stuff Noone else could. Kobe was in my opinion the hardest working and most focused and driven player I've ever seen. LeBron is impressive, I've seen him play in person half a dozen times, but he's never given me that awestruck feeling. Bird amazed me everytime I saw him play. He was playing chess while everyone else was playing checkers. and 1 last amazing fact, Michael Jordan, who most consider to be the goat, NEVER best Bird in the playoffs. Many of those clutch plays Bird made, he told the opposing players what he was going to do, and then he did it. At one point he challenged the entire league by saying that no one under 6'7" could guard him. We haven't heard all stories but how many other players would walk over to the opposing bench before the game starts and tell them, "I feel like...43 tonight", then win by scoring 43 points like he did against the Jazz with Stockton and Malone. (told by John Stockton) Who else has stood at the free throw line and told a trash talking opposing rookie player, " Rook, you gotta be kidding me. I'm the best f-ing shooter in the league. In. The. League. Understand? And you're here trying to tell me something?? " (told by Reggie Miller) Who else wins three consecutive 3 point contests but tells all the competitors before you start, "which one of you is coming in second?" You have to be the best to regularly say stuff like that to best in the NBA and then back it up.

Number 33... Larry Bird. In the 33rd season in the NBA Larry Bird was drafted by the Boston Celtics. He stayed in college that year instead of going into the NBA and the Boston Celtics performance that year was second to last in the NBA with only 29 wins. That year, Number 33, Larry Bird took his Sycamores to a 33 and 0 winning streak to challenge the Michigan State Spartans and Magic Johnson in the finals. That college game was the highest-watched basketball game ever and set the stage for a rivalry between him and Magic that ended up saving the NBA. The first year Larry played with the Celtics he was the only addition to the playing roster, the Celtics won 61 games his rookie year. It is the biggest turnaround record in NBA history. The second year Larry played with the Celtics they added Robert Parrish and Kevin Mc Kale and the Celtics won the championship. Larry was the team's leader out of the gate.

Bird might also be the best OFF BALL player ever. he also was one of the BEST post players AND one of the best shooters period. More clutch and more hustle.. its not even close. bird is open cuz he moves AROUND SCREENS and is crafty. pay attention to the entire play and watch his off ball movement. he moves like a 2 guard and shoots it like one. but he is 6'9

Lebron doesnt even have crossovers like that. he just puts his shoulder down and drives to the hoop. you young guys are WILDIN.

Everyone is continually saying that today the game is played differently. But they won't say how. It's simple...there's almost no defense. Player gets the ball, runs down court, shoots...again and again. It's like watching a tennis tournament. So, a player like James dominates because he's strong and fast. That's not the key factors of the GAME OF BASKETBALL. Actually it's too bad for those of us who love the game.

So true. The rules of the game don't matter. How does that make it more skilled? They used to play Basketball and it required mastering fundamentals and building on them. Today.... not so much. A version of street ball and the only purpose of refs is to break up fights. It's like the difference between Golf and Mini-golf. A couple skills carry over, but.... it's not the same sport.

@pete3198

Yep. In the older days there were athletic players, but they aren't always so dominant because the rules of the day allowed players to be just as effective using either physicality. This is why a small, guy like Stockton was able to compete against athletic point guards - he was a tough, physical little bastard. These days physicality is basically non-existent because the game is called so tightly, so athletic guys like LeBron can pretty much get to the basket at will, and is very difficult to contest them because pretty much any form of contact is an immediate foul. Likewise shooters have it so easy today because of today's rules. A defender cannot get into a shooters space when closing km a shot because this was made illegal due to the number of shooters who were coming down on people's feet rolling ankles. This means defenders can't challenge threes anywhere near as aggressively. This was never a thing in birds era. Nobody cared about protecting anybody. It was damn near "anything goes".

Nobody has made more of an impact like Larry bird did in the 13 years he played and Larry Bird is the GOAT. Not MJ. And the following is true about Larry Bird. Larry birds timeframe played 13 seasons in the NBA and what is impressive Larry missed nearly an entire season for bone spurs in his heels and played just 105 games in his last two campaigns due to his bad back. Those last two NBA seasons, 1990-91 and 91-92, were painful to watch, as Bird had to lie on the floor at times to ease the tension on his aching back. Years later, doctors explained the lengths they had to go to just to get Larry Legend on the court, and after hearing that, you won’t believe just how painful the whole situation was for him. Larry Bird infamously hurt his back doing something perfectly on-brand for the humble Celtics superstar, building a driveway for his mother by himself in 1985. And while the back injury affected him for the last seven seasons of his career, it truly became a problem starting in 1988. By the 1990s, Bird “had lost the structural stability of his spine,” according to his orthopedic therapist, Dan Dyrek. “It would slip into abnormal positions to try and lock itself to get an artificial stability.” The pain for the Celtics star was intense. Dyrek compares his spinal issues to “getting your finger stuck in a door, and somebody’s still pushing on the door.” Despite the pain, Bird did whatever he could to play, even while wondering whether he was doing long-term damage that would affect his quality of life in retirement. But he did it because, as he learned from his father years before, “If you get paid to go to work, you gotta go to work.” So, during the last two years of Bird’s career, Dyrek and his counterparts would go to extreme measures to get Bird on the court. “What we had to do was unlock his spine, realign it, [and] do techniques that would hold that for four hours, six hours, that type of thing, and then he’d go play basketball,” Dyrek explained. And while Larry Bird now admits he “probably should have retired in ’88, ’89,” he says the competition and hopes of one more NBA Finals showdown with Magic Johnson kept him going. www.sportscasting.com/larry-bird-doctors-unlock-spine-before-games-end-career/ and Larry Bird injured his shooting hand in a bar fight during the 1985 Eastern Conference Finals www.sportscasting.com/larry-bird-involvement-bar-fight-cost-celtics-1985-nba-finals/ which shows how much heart, love and dedication Larry had for the game. And There will never ever be a player like Larry Bird again. What an insult to Larry bird, His legacy, His accomplishments and the pain he endured and still did all that he did. How a person handles Adversity and other intangibles are part of what makes greatness. And watch these two video's kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJbKhXR-frx5bZI kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYmxfaeOirmFj7s kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5bThnx8aJ16i5o kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYmxfaeOirmFj7s kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqfOkoSIbbh7otU

LeBron wouldn't average 30-35 back then. It wasn't as easy to drive the lane then. You had to be able to shoot from outside the paint and outside of 3 ft. LeBron's average dropped to about 37%. LeBron, then, would have been a bench player at best. Don't get me wrong he's great for this time but Jordan AND Bird would be even more dominant than LeBron if they played now.

The only areas where LeBron is better than Bird is athleticism and longevity. They probably split on defense (LeBron better 1-1 but Bird better team defense). Shooting, passing, clutch and BB IQ easily go to Bird. Then there's the trash talk. Bird would have LeBron complaining to the refs before the 1st period was over. LeBron just not on Bird's level.

Lebron is a great player, nowhere near Bird, but he is a great player. Bird is the best all-around player in NBA history. I laugh when people say Bird didn't play defense and could not jump. Bird led the NBA 4 times in defensive win shares. If you add the number of times Lebron has done that and the number of times MJ has done that, you get ZERO! Bird averaged more defensive rebounds per game than the following players (this is not a complete list). Moses Malone Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Hakeem Olajuwon Shaquille O'Neal The year before Bird came to the Celtics, the Celtics record was 29-53. In Birds first 7 seasons the Celtics had more than 60 wins in 6 of those seasons. Bird won the MVP 3 years in a row. Bird won the first 3 3-pt contests at the all-star game. Bird started the 50-40-90 club. But maybe the thing Bird did that no other player has ever done - to the level that Bird did, was tell the opposing team what the play was before it happened and where he was going to shoot from and yet they still could not stop him.

There was a mindset that the star players back then had. You can hear it in how they talk about each other. Killer. Assassin. Bad man. All that kind of stuff. And you hear those things said about Bird. About Jordan. About Kobe. Isaiah. Duncan. Stockton. Those guys with ice water in their veins and absolutely no regard for their opponents' feelings. They wanted bragging rights and they were on the court to ruin your day. You even said it: he "terrorized" basketball. I have never seen that from LeBron. I've seen him fired up, excited, even fierce a time or two, but I've never seen him go dead in the eyes like a murderer. And that doesn't mean he isn't competitive, only that he, to my eye, lacks the streak of cruelty possessed by those I named, and a few others. All those guys I mentioned were happy to be the villain in someone else's story, and I think LeBron likes people too much to be able to play the villain.

@@iShootFast It's undoubtedly the era, on top of just simple personality traits. I'm not knocking it as a way to go through life; humans are built to collaborate. I'd much rather work alongside someone who's cooperative over someone who's competitive. But I'm not a pro athlete playing in my sport's highest league. I'm not fighting a war for survival. No one's going to compare me to the great of yore.
