To me, Larry's definitely the goat! As good as he was, I can only imagine how great he would have been without all of his injuries! @robgelfand24142 жыл бұрын
Ok , I am going to explain lots about Bird here that you need to know and why Bird is the best all-around player of all time. First - even before Bird started his NBA career he broke the index finger and shattered the knuckle on his shooting hand and he said he never shot as well after that. You made fun of Bird sticking his finger up but did you look at it? He can't straighten it and the knuckle is hideous. Second - Birds affect on the Celtics was immediate. The year before Bird played for the Celtics, the Celtics were 29-53. With Bird being the only significant change to Boston's roster, the Celtics record in Bird's first year was 61-21. Third - Bird won Rookie of the Year and came in 4th in the MVP voting his rookie year. This is where Bird placed in the MVP voting the next 8 years - 2,2,2,1,1,1,3,2, becoming only the 3rd player in NBA history(Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell are the other 2) to win 3 straight MVPs Fourth- Bird founded the 50-40-90 club, which is 50% or more field goal percentage, 40% or more 3-pt field goal percentage and 90% or more free throw percentage. There are only 9 players in NBA history who have accomplished this and only 2 who have done it more than once. Bird did it in back to back seasons and Steve Nash did it 3 times in a row(4 times overall). Fifth - in games Bird played in, his team won 73.58% of the time, only 2nd to Magic at 73.95% Sixth - even after the Celtics got McHale, Parish, Ainge and Dennis Johnson, Bird still made a huge difference - how huge, the Celtics record in the 87-88 season was 57-25. In the 88-89 season Bird only played in 6 games and had surgery for bone spurs on both feet, the Celtics record that years was 42-40. Seventh - his overall statistics - He's not the best shooter ever He's not the best rebounder ever He's not the best scorer ever What he is is a complete player and is in the top 250 NBA players of all time in these 8 categories Field goal % Free Throw % Points per game Assists per game Rebounds per game Steals per game Blocks per game Minutes per game Lebron isn't, Jordan isn't, Steph isn't, Kobe isn't, Durant isn't Dirk isn't, Magic isn't, Kareem isn't, Wilt isn't, Bill Russell isn't, and the list goes on and on. Bird is in the top 60 players of all time in 6 of the 8 categories. And last there are the things he did that I don't so anyone else doing. He played most of a game shooting with his off-hand just because he wanted to. Time after time in big spots he would tell the other team what the play was and where he would shoot from , before the play even started and they could not stop him. Byron Scott who played for the Lakers tells it best @ He knew where all players on the court were at all times. Additionally, Bird accomplished all this while playing hurt his entire career, the worst of it playing with a bad back after, get this, shoveling gravel while building a driveway at his mothers house. If Bird was breathing and could move he was playing. When Lebron was asked who his top 3 of all time were he put Bird at number 1
@kurtsherrick20662 жыл бұрын
Bird was a stone cold killer. You have to remember Bird played 4 years of College. Had he gone into the NBA 4 years earlier no telling what his numbers would be. During that Era players coming into the NBA were much more polished because they played 4 years of College. The game then was much tougher. Larry is the most well rounded player to ever play. If he just played for the stats no telling how many 60 point games he would have had.

My all time 5 ALWAYS starts with Bird and Jordan. After that there are so many. Jordan was 0-6 vs Bird in the Playoffs, and alot of that was after his back injury and when both his feet were horrible, right before surgery. Those three straight league MVP years, he was the best there has ever been. Bird was an all time great shooter, arguable the best every, from anywhere. Bird was an alltime passer, the best SF passer ever, and I will give LeBron credit, he is an all time great passer(he's also a quitter with no heart). His post game was VERY good. LeBron's post is trash for how big and strong he is. He averaged 10 bards his entire career. Watch his 50 greatest assists video. And, listne to everyone who played with or against him. To the man and the coach, every damn one of them say he is the best. There were plenty of world class athletes in the NBA in the 80's, but Bird scored on all of them, pretty much at will. If he wasn't athletic, then why was EVERYONE afraid of him. Literally, physically afraid of Bird. Last man out of the room.

Larry had an insane work ethic and had stated many times that you’re not there to do a job for 47-1/2 minutes, you’re there to do a job for 48 minutes. Larry came back to play after fracturing his orbital cheekbone. He was seeing double and I think he scored 20+ points in that 3-4th quarter. LeBron sits out for a couple of games for a muscle cramp. I’m not saying LeBron is not good and strong, but he just doesn’t have that ‘go the extra mile’ work ethic. Also, Larry was a loyal team player. He was with the Celtics for his entire career and didn’t go shopping around for another team that might win the ring like some players (ahem 🙄) have done. It’s just a personal preference of not only basketball skills and basketball IQ, but also loyalty to the team and to the sport of basketball. I did get to see Larry in person a few times. I’ve been watching basketball since the late 60’s (yes, I am old… 😉). Having grown up and lived in NYC, the Knicks were my favorite team, but anytime Larry came into town, I did my best to get some tix for Madison Square Garden. Every time he stepped foot on that court, you knew something special was going to happen and it always did. I often say he was a once in a lifetime gift from the basketball gods! Keep checking him out - I’ve seen a lot of reactors have a change of opinion. As you can probably tell by now, he is my number one GOAT. ☘️🐐

Larry Legend is my #1 regardless pick for creation of a TEAM. When he was going to high school, the whole county came to see him play and his team won. When he went to Indiana State, his team went 33 - 0 and came in second in the NCAA FINALS to Michigan State and Magic a much stronger team. The Celtics prior to Larry were at the very bottom of the NBA. After drafting Larry they completely changed and became a contender with him being the only difference. BB is not a one on one athletic contest like a game of horse. Although I wouldn't bet against him in a 3's contest (3 -0) against the best of that time. What I am saying is, he made his team better and all his teammates knew it. He sacrificed himself to have a winning team. There probably was never a better ball handler than Pistol Pete, but he was never on a winning team except with Larry. To build a team, select Larry first, then solid role players you can count on to play every game hard, to win. No big egos, just raw talent. Count on Larry to find them on the court and make it work.

Thanks for sharing your video. I think it is impossible to put the "goat" label on any 1 player = so many variables, but Bird should be in the conversation. Dig into Bird's career and it is truly amazing. Here is what I have found. While not being a great 1 on 1 defender, Bird was on 3 all defensive teams ( 2nd team) and in the 1983 season actually finished tied for 3rd place for the DPOY award. Bird led the league in defensive win shares 4 times and was 7 times in the top five!! Bird was once 2nd in DRTG and was 6 times in the top ten in DRTG. Bird was far from unathletic = as a rookie he had a 28 inch vertical jump = same as Karl Malone and the NBA average. Bird was the main reason Boston went from a 29 win season before Bird arrived to a 61 win season with Bird as a rookie = a 32 game turnaround which was the biggest 1 year turnaround in NBA history. Bird won the ROY award by a large margin over Magic ( Bird had 63 votes to 3 for Magic) and in his rookie year was 4th in the MVP vote. Here is how Bird placed for the next 8 years in the MVP vote = 2,2,2,1,1,1,3 and 2nd. In those first 9 seasons before the dual heel surgery and back issues Boston with Bird playing won 534 games and lost 177 games of the 711 played for a win % of 75.1% This was even higher than his measuring stick and rival Magic during the same 9 year span in the weaker West, Magic was 475 wins and 164 losses = a win % of 74.3%. Bird created the 50-40-90 club and did it 2 seasons in a row and just missed in the 85 and 86 seasons - SO I went back and totaled his #'s and Bird actually averaged 50-40-90 over these 4 consecutive seasons of 85,86,87 and 88. And his per game for these 4 seasons was 28.1 points and 9.7 rebounds and 6.8 assists. No other "goat" candidate can make such a claim. I think Bird was the most complete and best all around player we have ever seen!

I've said is in other reactions about who's the GOAT. Here's how I personally see it. Being 59 years old and having watched the game, rules and so forth evolve, I love having the discussion with someone claiming their man is the GOAT. Truth is that there will never be a greatest of "all" time. Each generation has and always will have a select few that are the greats. As physical conditioning, medicines, rules and other things change, the athletes also change. A perfect example is when I hear LJ fans clain he is "THE GOAT" is that as physical as the game was back in the early days he wouldn't survive. Bird could most likely play better during this era than LeBron in Birds era.

My opinion of all-time greats: #1 Michael Jordan #2 (tie) Larry Bird #2 (tie) Magic Johnson (but if I absolutely had to choose between Magic and Bird, I'd take Bird) Look at the rest of Clayton Crowley's "Making the Case" series. Two of them, Magic and Kareem were on the same team. And Bird played against that team. Was 3-time MVP with competition like that. LeBron put Bird in his top-3. Kareem said Larry Bird was the toughest player he ever had to play against. You heard James Worthy saying he'd rather guard Michael Jordan than Larry Bird. Someone (I think it was Worthy) said Jordan would make you look slow, Bird would make you look stupid.

Another reason bird definitely is in the conversation he beat all of the All stars and hall of famers in his era, no other player can say that they beat every single all star in their era in the play offs and bird also swept Michael and the bulls in the playoffs two years in a row in 1986 and 1987 and those three consecutive mvps happened with a young Michael in the league. He definitely has case for being the best to do it

Putting the missed shot in the 87' Finals in context. The Celtics had gone 39-2 at home that season. 40-1 the season prior. They had dominated the East to get to the Finals. The probability of Larry Bird hitting that shot because of those factors was 96%. That is why Magic, Riley and the rest of the Lakers knew they got lucky. Had Larry hit the shot, they get to 2-2 with a tied series, have 1 more game at home of which they would be likely to win and just would need 1 game in LA to be the champs. Had they tied it 2-2, it would have likely gone 7 games. Instead, the Lakers win... because teams down 3-1 in the finals don't come back and win. That he missed it was that shocking. That is the one thing Clayton should have mentioned about that shot. Larry averaged close to 50/40/90 for his entire career. As for a full context of his rivals...to get past the East... Pacers - Reggie Miller, Chuck Person 76ers - Dr. J, Moses Malone and Charles Barkley. Bucks - Sydney Moncrief Bulls - Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen Cavs - Mark Price and Brad Daugherty Knicks - Bernard King and Patrick Ewing Hawks - Dominique Wilkins, Spud Webb and Kevin Willis Pistons - Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Dennis Rodman and Bill Laimbeer. Nets - Orlando Woolridge Bullets - Jeff Malone With the Hornets, Heat and Magic not coming until 1988-1989. (The Raptors several years later). Where as the Western Conference for the Lakers to get through, the main rival was the Houston Rockets. Almost every team aside from them had up and down years. Either because of youth or because of aging vets who didn't have a lot left in the tank. This doesn't mean they didn't have anyone who was good, just that nobody had the depth of talent the Lakers and Rockets had. But, here were the main guys on those teams .. Jazz - Karl Malone and John Stockton Suns - Kevin Johnson Sonics - Shawn Kemp, Xavier McDaniel and Gary Payton Mavs - Mark Aguirre, Derek Harper and Rolando Blackmon Spurs - George Gervin and towards the end of the end of the 80's - David Robinson Nuggets - Alex English and Fat Lever Clippers - nobody (serious, they probably were the worst team of the decade). Kings - Wayman Tisdale, Lionel Simmons and Mitch Richmond Warriors - Chris Mullin and Tim Hardaway, Sr. Blazers - Clyde Drexler and Kiki Vandeweghe The Wolves came in around the same time as the Heat, Hornets and Magic at the end of the decade. Grizzlies and Pelicans not until many years later and of course the Sonics eventually became the Thunder.

I got Larry #1, this video calls it out, you can't compare the people that bron played against in the beginning of his career to the guys on the lakers, MJ in prime, Hakeem, Isaiah, the list goes on. If he was coming into the league at the same time as Lebron he would have taken it right to him. The biggest difference in my opinion is the passing and that made other players better around him. You watch that video and so many of those shots or fakes only work because they know he's unselfish and looking to pass first. That's not the game today. Reppin Boston here!

Bird is the GOAT in my world, but I aint hitting the dislike my guy. Thanks for sharing your reaction.

If Larry Bird had Lebron or Michael Jordans athletic ability he would've averaged 50 a game. Bird was 6-0 in the playoffs against Jordan. Today's NBA is too soft.

Top three MJ Bird and Russell arguably in any order.

There CAN'T be a goat of all time....just goats of an era. I have Bird up very close to the top, but only in an alternate universe will we ever know.

You also have to remember . . . the 80's and 90s was damn near "no blood, no foul" so those boys had it WAY more rough than these new flopping players lololol

Basketball is a team sport. When I'm picking a 3 spot for my win it all team, I'm taking Larry over Lebron. For the same reason I'd take Magic over 2 other PGs, that based on stats are far better. Team. My team for the 5 spots on my team PG - Magic SG - Jordan SF - Bird PF - Duncan C - Shaq While I can think of players that are better in each position (besides mj) on teams not this one.....I find that THIS team, is unmatched in team play.

Larry was one of the only players that scared Magic AND Jordan. Bird is the greatest Small Forward of all time.

IMHO, Larry Bird is the GOAT! If you don't believe what his man is saying, listen to the legends who sing Bird's praises. This man is laying down facts, no cap.

Trying to find another player who had 4 seasons in a row of 50% from the field, 40% from the 3, and 90% from the free throw line... Only one name pops up.

Bird recorded the first 2 seasons in the 50-40-90 club in 86-87 and 87-88. His percentages were 52.5 - 40 - 91 and 52.7 - 41.4 - 91.6

Bird is no doubt top 5. His only issue was health. Remember too that Len Bias was supposed to be an equal to Jordan and he died after the draft when picked by the Celtics. If he and Bird played together the Lakers might have zero rings vs the Celts. If you don't know about Bias look him up. Pat Riley said "If I needed one shot to win a game I want Jordan. If I had one shot to save my life I want Bird"

Definitely top 5. Put it this way, who's in your starting 5 lineup of all time? For me, PG Mike SG Kobe SF Larry PF LeBron C Shaq I'd put that lineup against ANY other 5 ever.

MJ at the 1? I respect your lineup, but I’ve never seen anyone put him at the 1 spot that’s really interesting

@@henrystory4703 I never took it as you thought I was wrong, so don't worry about that. This is just my starting 5 of all time, right, wrong, indifferent. Ya know? If I really needed a true 1 I might switch out Kobe and put Magic at the 1 and MJ at the 2 instead. lol

Imagine if he played today he would be able to drop 80 cause the nba defense today is garbage compared to what it is and the players get injured and are out more often not like the 80-90s we’re you get a couple of scratches and just shake it off
