Sorry about the audio getting cut out on 3/4 of the video but in terms of my last statement, I was saying Larry Bird would destroy todays NBA. His IQ was out of this world. He had skills and was the ultimate competitor. Luka Doncic and Jokic are killing the league but not really athletic but highly skilled. Bird in the same gesture but a lot better than people realize and will talk a lot of trash. I try to get this one reuploaded.

I just look at this a bit different, I guess. The way I see it, Larry would be Larry regardless of the era he played in. He's never been a so called dominant player by definition. He never thought that way, and that's what made him so great. He is by far the best team player I've ever seen. It's always been what was needed to win a game. That's how I saw him. I don't think his numbers would ever change no matter when he played.

The only real problem for Bird, if he was dropped in from the 80's, would be the possible lack of drive and team mentality on the part of his teammates. Since he has the ability to elevate each of his teammates' personal performances, maybe they would see the light and join in the team mentality quickly. Transitioning to Team wins that lift everyone and basketball. He wasn't selfish. He spread the wealth. He filled the gaps where necessary. A truly multifaceted, all-around elite teammate. Bird led by example. Honestly, if Bird got dropped into today's game and was given game film to watch to become aware of the adjustments he'd need to be aware of, he'd come in and dominate. He was amazing at adapting (except to not giving his all. He couldn't do that.) I don't think he would stay pinned to the 3pt line. Challenging the defensive mindset of the opponent with snap midrange buckets; posting them up low coupled with a team passing mentality. He would keep opponents guessing as to what weapon he would use on them next. And like McHale said, his teammates would soon relish the fact of "you get open, I'll get you the ball". I personally think it would have to be Bird straight out of the 80s tho. Bird raised today might not have the same attitude that Larry Legend had/has. His mental attitude was what was behind his work ethic and drive. He took what God gave him and developed it and adapted and refused to half-a** it. Money and stats didn't drive him. Pursuit of excellence in every aspect of the game is a beautiful thing to see. He was the kind of teammate any lover of the game would want to play with or coach. IMHO 🙂

Very good comment, as great as Bird was he benefited from his teammates will to win. I'm not sure he would have that in today's game from today's players.

Yes absolutely! I have! Have seen him play from the 80s till the day he retired. He is too cerebral of a player for today that he can wear you out mentally at the warmup line and then finish you up during the game. When Bird walks on the floor, he just sees a bunch of 5th graders thinking they can play ball and proceeds to destroy them. I say all of this as a Sixers fan and not even a Celtics fan but respected Birds game always.

It is like comparing a sprinter to cross-country. Bird had great endurance. Watch the "Heat Game" 1984 game five. Kareem is needing oxygen as the temp keeps climbing and Larry is looking like a walk in the park. There is a reason he is so clutch and it is the way he worked out. Running the bleachers hours before the game and practicing his shot over and over until it was muscle memory. He had extrodinarily quick reflexes too. Made it look like he could see the future.

The premise that Bird wouldn't be able to compete in today's soft ass league is nuts. He was a three time mvp three time second place in voting during a time when you had Kareem, Magic, Dr J, Hawkeem, Isaiah etc...etc... Could any of those guys compete today? Hell yes!! And he dominated them!!

I think videos asking if Bird would dominate today's NBA are funny..... Of course he would dominate! The game hasn't changed since when Bird was playing, except has gotten a lot easier for shooters. Bird would eat players alive, just like he did back in the 80s. I think his trash talking would be even worse for other players because modern players are pretty soft mentally. Very few play with pain. They would crumble under the pressure of letting a 6'10" white boy from French Lick kick their ass! Great video!

Imagine Bird growing up shooting 3s, in AAU, high school, college, and pros. Now, 6th graders knock them down with regularity, LB would shoot 45% from 3 with todays technique, and he’d actually practice them. Imagine Bird, working on the moves he was merely improvising on the fly in the 80s, like step backs and fades. Imagine Bird training by todays ball handling requirements, and being able to get away with travels, double dribbles , and “hesis”. Imagine Birds legendary head and ball fakes combined with todays spacing and rules. How many times per game would he draw a defender in the air shooting a 3? He’d go to the line for 3 FTs 3 times a game! Reminder they only got 2 shots if you got fouled shooting a 3 in his day. Imagine Larry “The Master of the 1/2 Inch” playing with no hand checking. Imagine Bird with todays medical advances, he’d play for 20 years if not injured. If he were focused on scoring he’d average 40 today, but he’s LB and unselfish and would probably average 35/12/10

You think Larry'd only play for 30 years if he could? I bet he'd go for 40. It killed him to retire. But when Larry realized he could no longer improve, it was time to hang it up. He improved his game consistently for 13 years. I guess we should be thankful for that.
@frankdascoli709
@frankdascoli709 Жыл бұрын
@@andybilakshow260 bird said if Bias had lived, he’d have retired in 88. He hurt his back in 85, but by 87/88 it started to show. His last few years (89-91)he was not improving, he looked old and slow (which he never did prior to 85/6). He was forced to rely more on his craftiness, which was also fun as hell to watch, but his prime was over. He put up his 2 highest scoring averages 87-88 but you could see he wasn’t right (bone spurs, bad back, 2 junk Achilles). Amazingly in the 7 years flowing his back injury he averaged 25/9/7 on 49.6%FG / 39.5% 3 pt FG / 91% FT …almost averaging 50/40/90 over seven years on injuries that would have lead lesser players to quit. Bird speaks in riddles sometimes but I sort of believed him when he said that about retiring. It was just too much for him at the end, seeing the chiropractor before games to unlock his spine, laying on the floor when subbed out, hobbling around on his broken feet. It was bittersweet to watch: amazing he was schooling guys while being broken and beating people with his mind, but sad as he was obviously a shell of his former self. As Jerry west said “he’s as close to a perfect player that could possibly be”

Hey JP, What's up? Love your reactions man! Check this out. Doubt if you ever heard this Bird story before. I'm from Boston, and I had season tickets at the old Boston Garden right behind the visitors bench from 1980-1995 so I got to see just about every game Larry played at home during his career. JP, I heard Bird talk so much shit, that if I ever wrote a book about it, I'd be a millionare. And you could really hear him too because he could be loud with that trash. So I used to hear all his trash talking to the other team and even the coaches because I was only three rows behind their bench. I'm telling you man, Larry Bird was a damn one-man comedy show! One night the Celtics were playing the Philadelphia 76ers back in 1985. I remember that Bird was lighting up the entire 76er team that night. I think his numbers were something like 38 pts. 11 reb. 8 asst. He was killing Mo Cheeks, Dr.J., Bobby Jones, and Clemon Johnson. He was particularly nasty that night because he was getting elbowed a lot. I remember Bobby Jones came down and dunked on Bird and drew the foul too. Jones started yapping at Bird after that, so Larry began destroying him. Even though Jones was an elite player, he was still white and Bird hated a white dude on him. Right after that play, Bird just dropped four straight three-pointers on him. Four straight man! The third one he made was right in my corner where I could heard him loud and clear! The first couple of shots he kept telling Jones he should have stayed in high school where they could really use him! So on the fourth one Jones was running hard out to the three line trying to stop Bird. Bird began yelling "C'mon you slow-ass fuck. Hurry up before I hit this three in your face boy!" Jones leaped up in the air. And when he did, Bird just side-stepped him, popped his shot, let it fly, and as Jones went flying behind him, Larry yelled "Welcome to the parachute club son, a hope you got a few more with you!" And he turned and began running down the court while the ball was still in the air. SWISH! I was cracking up. He killed Charles Barkley that night too! Bird must have smelled alcohol on Barkley because he said something like "Hey Charlie, is that vodka or gin? I can't tell. You were out a little late last night huh? Well, you better drink lots of water tonight because I'm gonna have you running like a robber!" Then Bird ran from the top of the key over to the three-point line in the corner and yelled "No Charlie, I'm over here. You better hurry before I score twice on your ass!" Barkley started running over to Bird and Bird held the ball until Barkley was right in his face and drained a three all net. He looked at Barkley after and said "See, you did all that running for nothing!" Then he began destroying Moses Malone in the paint grabbing rebounds. And he said to Malone "Hey big man, you ain't jumping so good tonight. You better lay off mama's chicken if you wanna stop me!" By this time I was dying laughing. Bird was a funny f**ck. By the middle of the fourth quarter, Larry had gone through just about everyone on the whole team. Barkley hadn't played much in the fourth. He was sitting down near the end of the bench and he looked exhausted. Bird saw this too and wasn't gonna let him off that easy. "Hey Charlie, hey Charlie" Bird started yelling at him. Barkley didn't wanna go back in by that time. He was beat. But Bird wanted to trash him some more. So Larry started yelling at coach Cunningham "Hey coach, ain't you got anybody that you can send out to guard me? Anyone at all? Not even a rookie so I can practice my shooting drills? And don't even think about putting another white guy on me or I'll go for 50!" Bird was crazy man. Lol. So finally he looks back at Barkley, then looks at coach again, and Barkley one more time. I thought I was gonna pee my pants by now. So then he yells over to Barkley " OK coach, send out the Pillsbury Dough Boy one more time, I'll run a little more of that off him!" I mean Larry Bird was hilarious on that court. But that game was great. Larry was in top form. Great review man Thanks... (Oh yeah, I forgot. He was taking it to Dr J too and they started trashing each other until Bird told him he should retire! That was nasty too.)

I've been watching the NBA since the early 80s and while I think Lebron is arguably the second best player I've seen you can make a pretty good argument that Bird might have been better because he's a better shooter, passer, rebounder and was consistently better at closing out games. Lebron for his career is only shooting 37% outside of 3 feet and in the playoffs that goes down to 31% so he has a huge deficiency in his game that Bird and Jordan didn't. Bird's career was cut short by a bad back also so he could have won more championships if not for that. He was unbelievably good.

Oh, he'd destroy the league but to fit him with a team of 100%ers would be difficult. His passing was on spot because he rewarded those that hustled which only brought out more hustle. Bird is Taylor made fore the league today. A sharp shooting big man that could thread a needle with a pass. This means if your open or going to be open Bird will know it before you do. If you slack off to watch for a pass Bird would make you pay from anywhere on the floor. On defense he would do what he always did. Out hustle everyone on the floor and reed passes, time blocks and anticipate the steal.
