In a best of 7 series the best team wins, in a single game that’s not necessarily the case. Interesting call last night in the Pelicans/Lakers game. The Pelicans were called for two fouls in the final 2 minutes of the first quarter. The first foul was at 1:53 seconds left. The second foul was around 1:30 seconds left. The refs made a mistake and forgot to award the Lakers two free throws. Instead they had the Lakers inbound the ball like you would on most fouls. The Lakers missed the shot on the ensuing inbounds and the two teams continued to play until the end of the quarter. At the start of the next quarter the refs informed Willie Green that they would be giving the Lakers their two free throws since they made a mistake. The Lakers shot their two free throws and then play resumed. Willie, a bright young NBA mind, never bothered to ask what would have happened if the Lakers had made their shot on the extra possession they were awarded. Nor did he ask the refs to add the 20 seconds or so back on the clock that was lost on the extra possession that shouldn’t have counted. It was a major game after all. A win would have guaranteed the Pelicans a playoff berth instead of a Play/in, and they were losing by 7. Those 20 seconds might have had major implications for a team fighting to overcome a deficit. Instead Willie just took it, and allowed the refs to screw his team over in a major game just as many teams have been robbed before. Can anyone ever remember the refs retroactively awarding a team free throws like this on a call they got wrong much earlier? I have watched 100’s, maybe over 1000, and I have never seen the refs do this. I would love someone to confirm that this happens occasionally. I think more likely this was a first time. I think even more likely, this situation would never had arose had the Lakers made the shot on the extra possession they were awarded. The refs probably would have simply chalked it up as a mistake, and a play that was far too late to go back a retroactively correct. Just another day in Lakerland. Sidenote: Here are some interesting Lakers facts below: 1. Did you know the Lakers free throw differential over the last two seasons is well over +1100 more free throws than their opponents? They lead the league in that category. The second place team doesn’t even crack +350. 2. Did you know that if you combined the free throw differential of the teams in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place the Lakers would still have a comfortable lead over that team? 3. Did you know that the Lakers have shot more free throws than their opponent’s in 23 out of the last 24 games? The one game they shot less was by 4 free throws. 4. Did you know that during a recent game where the Lakers played the Timberwolves they shot 31 free throws to Minnesota’s 11? This was a game Lebron missed and Anthony Davis sat for 3 and a half quarters due to injury. 5. Did you know the league is outright attempting and succeeding to rig games in the Lakers favor?
