The fairytales of LeBron's "elite" defense has been going around various NBA circles for years, as has the fact he got "cheated" out of the DPOY. Time to separate the fact from the fiction...

The voting for DPOY award and All-Defensive honors that year is probably one of the strangest ones ever. The reason Gasol ended up on the 2nd team was because for some reason the coaches decided to vote and put 6 guys on the first team (the only time that has ever happened in NBA history). Also, the voting for that was super thin too (two guys on the first team barely made it there by 2 votes) and Gasol came a vote away from not making either team. I have zero idea why on Earth the votes were sooooo spread out that year.

Yeah at age 34, the season Kobe tore his achilles, he was defending all the elite point guards. There's that segment of MJ talking about it and how ludacris is was, how Kobe is willing to go to the extreme, and he's just as cursed as Mj when it comes to that. It's great to play 21 years at a high level as Lebron has, but he's not playing defense like Kobe or MJ did. That's a major factor that separates them.

When one of the biggest parts of your argument invokes the phrase "when he wants to he/when he gives the effort" you've lost the argument. Basketball is a two way sport and you're not supposed to play elite defense "when you feel like it." You're not going to always succeed even when you do but the point is you were trying.
@skap_attack3 ай бұрын
GREAT POINT here. As that is a HUGE phrase thrown around when discussing Lebron’s defensive prowess. “When he wants to” 😂. Because as we know, he has to “save himself” for the other end. Pretty sure both Jordan and Kobe had higher career usage rates than Lebron. They didn’t save themselves tho.
@tmoney3603 ай бұрын
And the thing is if this was a new phenomenon i'd be more sympathetic to the argument that he has to pick his spots to conserve energy. He is almost 40 and has played 21 seasons. But it's only recently has his age become a more reasonable excuse. His lack of effort goes all the way back to his second stint in Cleveland. He hasn't made ANY defensive teams since he was with the Heat. Not one. We have compilations of him standing on the other side of the court watching his teammates play 4 v 5 at the age of 30. If you go 100% some times, 50% most times and 0% at many spots the net result is a bad defender. You play poor/lazy defense more than great.

LeTravel switched to full time acting (flopping) since 2014. Even during the 5-6 years when he was working hard at the defensive end, playing good D, he wasn't locking down on 33 y.o. Paul Pierce as he was scoring & hitting daggers in his face, while Ron Artest, locked down Pierce during G7 of Celtics Lakers Finals during the same time. He had the flashy chase down blocks but you never see him chase after anyone around screens nor draw charges.

Hey Skap, I don’t know if you’re someone who cares about this type of constructive criticism, but just so you know, “begs the question” isn’t synonymous with “raises the question.” I hear you misuse it sometimes. The way you’re using the term, it would be correct to say “raises the question.” To be clear, this might be the most misused term in the modern English language, it’s not just you. It’s to the point that I can only recall hearing it used properly in philosophy or debate settings. “Raises the question” works exactly the way you’d expect, but “begs the question” describes a logical fallacy wherein an argument relies on its own assumed conclusion. In other words, the argument “insists upon itself.” For example; let’s say I argue that all 5’10” people are untrustworthy, and when you ask me why, I reply “they’re untrustworthy because they lie too much.” This is an argument that begs the question, because the truth of my argument relies on its conclusion already being true from the outset. This means that the argument is circular and thus, illogical. Put simply, the vast majority of people could erase the term “begs the question” from their vocabulary and replace it with “raises the question.”

Lebron’s most famous blocks are chase downs or from the weak side. He can’t face guard anybody, the media saying he can “guard all 5 positions” gotta be the biggest lie, he cannot guard legit 7 foot 280+ lbs centers (Embiid, Jokic and them), he also cannot stay in front of quick PGs (Rose, Ja, Russ). I’ve only seen 3 people on my life guard all 5 positions (Rodman, Draymond and OG Anunoby, OG more 1-4 but the occasional C he can hold his own against)
