When I started watching basketball, Larry was still almost 10 years from coming into the league. I watched two leagues formed to become one and then I watched that League almost disappear from everyone's memory. Playoff games started at 10:30, 11:00 at night. Pete Maravich and Larry Bird are the two most underrated basketball geniuses in NBA history.

If I could pick any player in his prime to be on my team, I would pick Larry first. He’d make the team better and I would want him with the ball at the end. I was 6-7 in 1986. I saw the games but at the time had no idea how special it was to see what he was doing every night. Bird vs Magic is, in my opinion, the best the league ever got. They fought like dogs and played amazing team ball with clutch finishers.

I grew up watching basketball in the late 70's till now. Bird was different. He played his entire career injured in one way or another. Yes we know about his back, after watching this you now know about his back, but his senior year in college he suffered a severe finger injury that required pins and surgery and he almost got dropped by the Celtics before he even started due to this, the team doctors told the owner and coach, he's damaged goods. Larry went out on the court and started shooting around for them and they decided to keep him. Bird said he never had the same feel for the ball his entire NBA career. Lebron don't do that. Bird I think was the best all around player, clutch, shooter, passer, rebounder, three point shooter (which in his college days wasn't even a thing yet), best trash talker but better yet followed it up every time. He saved the NBA and made it relevant. If you are an NBA fan, a Lebron fan, a Leonard fan, a Luca fan etc.. you can thank Larry Bird cause without Bird you don't have them playing at the level they play. There's never been another Bird. for me: top players 1. Bird, 2. MJ, 3. Magic, 4. Kareem, 5. Kobe, 6. Wilt. after that does it really matter? Those 6 guys stood higher than anyone else so far. They changed the game.

He also broke his finger on his dominant hand, and had to have a couple of surgeries on it. This was during a baseball game with his brother, before he ever played for the NBA. All the Celtics trainers told the coaches and owner that he was damaged goods, but they took him out to the floor and told him to show them what he had, and he still looked unbelievably good. Even Larry says he never had the same feel for the ball after that injury. Then he hurt his back later. Imagine how incredible he’d have been with no injuries. Wow! Legendary for sure!

Had a finger that got broken or messed up and that never healed, either. Plus, he had Achilles surgery on both ankles!!! Hey, I loved Steve Nash! He and Larry both were such great UNselfish team players. And, when Larry was in high school, his father committed suicide. His dad said that he thought their family would be better off without him! But I too was watching those Celtics/Lakers battles in the 80's. Basketball was lit up around here during that time. Larry Bird was in my opinion the best Celtic to ever play. Bill Russell fans would have a big beef with that statement though. My top 5 are, Bird, Magic, Jordan, Olajuwon, and...it's tough to round it out, so many great players to choose from. Here's some stat info that needs to be part of the discussion. Over a five year stretch Bird shot at least 50/40/90, while putting up about 28 points, 7 assists, and 10 rebounds. During that five years he won 3 league MVPs in a row. Another thing to consider is that Bird wrecked his back in '85, the year after Jordan entered the league. Talk about bad timing to get a career-ending injury. Even so Bird's Celtics swept Jordan's Bulls twice in the playoffs, the only two times they faced each other in the post-season before Bird had to retire early.

Nate "Tiny" Archibald -- I think is commenting at around 56 minutes. He was a great unstoppable point guard in his prime. He led the league in assists and points with Kansas City. Red Auerbach got him out of retirement and he played point guard with the Celtic & Bird in 1981.

Graphical update, I think the problem with the sometimes really poor quality in the old video footage, is because of VHS Tapes. They were used all the time from late 70's to late 80's to record things. Most of this footage probably came from vhs. With it, someone can re-record over it many times. Each time you do however record over it, and each time you play it, it looses pixel quality and becomes fuzzy.

Larry blew out both his Achilles heels, he also played with back issues. Issues that caused him to have to lay down on the floor when he wasn't playing, cause it was painful to sit on the bench. Players now a day, won't play if they have a hangnail. Someone correct me if I'm wrong..... Did he say that Danny Ainge was Will Farrell?

Think about this, Larry Bird played against hall of famers in the play offs. Labron got beat by Dirk Nowitski. Bird swept Michael Jordan Twice. Add in the fact that Labron is playing in todays NBA where if you pass gas you get called for a foul. Larry Bird is the best small forward to ever play the game.

Larry was one of the best players EVER! My top 3 is Larry, Jordan, and Magic. Larry didn’t play…he went to work! Right when you said you were going to start doing that around 5:23, he bounced the ball off the other player’s ass Another thing about Bird was he knew where everyone was at all times. He wasn’t a ball hog. He was the definition of team player. He played at 150%! Broken fingers, broke back, bad knees, bad feet, broken cheekbone.. didn’t matter. He still played. He played before Labron was born. If anything, Bron took notes on Bird.

Respect to you and your pops! Wise man putting it to you like that. I don't think Bird is better than Bron overall but it's damn close and Bird was better down the stretch in the 4th. Bird would have benefited a lot from the modern era. He also had a really bad finger injury (crushed knuckle) that left the index finger of his dominant hand permanently disfigured - before coming into the NBA. He said his shooting touch was the never the same after. And then there's the back injuries that derailed his career after 86. We never got to see the best of Larry Bird. I still have him in my top 5 though, what a legend.

RAH, I will give you this. Larry Bird didn't put up the numbers that Lebron has. But Larry Bird was the best overall player EVER. His commitment to the game is unsurpassed. When you have NBA legends making statements like "Michael Jordan would make you look silly, but Larry Bird would make you look stupid!", you know the man was a BEAST! I think Lebron is the best of our current time but not the best ever. There are so many past legends that played when we didn't have the 3-point shot and when the game was much more physical than it is today. I think there are a lot of things to take into consideration when trying to determine the GOAT. I love that you got a better feel for just how special Larry Bird really was by watching this video. Much respect to you to listening to your father about the great Larry Bird.👍👍

Glad that you liked the video. I have Jordan as the #1 and Kareem as the #2 and after that it get difficult. My top 5 would finish as Bird at the PF and Lebron as the SF and Magic as the PG. I will take that 5 against any other team. FYI Bird gets a bad rap for being a poor defender and that is only true at the end of his career. He was clearly a better defender than Magic. Bird was on 3 all defensive teams ( 2nd team) and in 1983 Bird finished tied for 3rd place for the DPOY award. Bird led the league in defensive win shares 4 times and was 7 times in the top 5. Bird had a 28 inch vertical as a rookie and was once 2nd in DRTG and was 6 times in the top 10 in DRTG. Here is a link to a photo from the November 9th issue of Sports Illustrated in 1981 on page 84 showing Bird blocking Kareem's skyhook. Bird won the ROY because he was the main reason Boston went from a 29 win team to a 61 win team = a 32 game improvement and the best improvement in NBA history. Bird also created the 50-40-90 club and did it 2 seasons back to back AND Bird averaged 50-40-90 over 4 consecutive seasons of 85,86,87 and 88. No other "goat" can make that claim. here is the link i.ytimg.com/vi/xuB6v5qGhYI/hqdefault.jpg?sqp=-oaymwEbCKgBEF5IVfKriqkDDggBFQAAiEIYAXABwAEG&rs=AOn4CLDQz8TfiOB6PFh9CeshZ83jPIPlPg

When high definition became the standard, TVs and monitors had more than twice as many pixels to fill in. The original content never had that information to begin with, so it makes it up. It tries, but there's no cheap way to make old footage look good. It's the same principle at work, in the more you blow up this photo, the worse looking it gets.

Considering how Lebron is such a devoted historian of the game, I'd say that ANY comparison where he is debated about being either "as good as" or "better than" Larry Bird would be something which he'd both be flattered and more than a little embarrassed by. ...especially since he's listed Larry Bird in his Top 3. From my standpoint - and I'm old enough that I got to watch all of those games in the 80's and early 90's with Bird - I'd say that Lebron James has taken the lessons which he absorbed from watching Larry Bird's games, and has used those lessons to drive his own unique and unquestionably solid game.

LOVE how you kept saying Bird "had to learn" from Lebron, even though Bird played around 20 years prior to Lebron playing. I mean, I get it, it is a joke and all. But still. There ARE some people out there who would actually think that way insead of just straight up admitting that MOST of what Lebron can do on the court is something he learned by studying Bird's style of playing the game.
@SteveGellerMusic

James has had the better career, because there is no substitute for 20 years of consistent greatness, and Bird only played 9 healthy seasons and 13 overall. The fact that James is still a top 10 player on both ends of the court, with his mileage and with the amount of pressure he has been under for his entire career, is virtually impossible. He would be, without question, the most remarkable team athlete of the 21st century if Tom Brady weren't around. But Bird's first 9 seasons are without parallel in the league, and his peak (1983-1988) is as high as any player's, Michael included. Bird almost won 6 consecutive MVP's in an era that most experts consider the most well-rounded in NBA history. He was one steal shy of a quad-double through 3 quarters once, and decided that "he had done enough damage already" and sat out the 4th quarter. The best shooting AND best passing non-guard in NBA history, and he averaged more rebounds per game for his career than Ewing did. And he did so while playing 1/3 of his career in massive back pain.
