Lec 27: Egoistic Suicide and Altruistic Suicide| Emile Durkheim

In this lecture, we will study about
1. The Sociological perspective on Suicide as propounded by Emile Durkheim in his famous book written in 1895 Le Suicide.
2. We will focus on Egoistic suicide driven by weak integration of an individual in society and Altruistic Suicide driven by strong integration of individual in society.
3. Durkheim refuted the existing perspectives on suicide predominant among them being the psychological perspective on suicide and the Theory of Imitation of Suicide put forward by hus intellectual opponent Gabriel Tarde.
4. Durkheim argues that Suicide is a social fact and is driven by suicidogenic forces of Integration and regulation.
5. He further classifies the suicide into four different categories namely Egoistic suicide, Anomic Suicide, Fatalistic Suicide and Altruistic Suicide.
