Responsibilties of TRANSPORT LAYER: 1. End to end delivery of data. (port to port delivery) 2. Reliability ( We prefer TCP to UDP as TCP establishes a connection oriented nw and the data sent by the TCP is received by the receiver in ordered sequence. 3. Error Control( checksum) 4. Congestion and Flow control ( STOP & WAIT ; GO BACK & SR) 5. Segmentation ( data from APP layer comes in bits which are transformed into a SEGMENT through tcp/ udp and then sent it to the Network Layer. 6. Multiplex and DEMUX.

The Transport Layer is the fourth layer of the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) Model, which provides end-to-end communication between two communicating devices in a computer network. The main function of the transport layer is to ensure that data is transmitted smoothly and error-free from the source to the destination. The transport layer is responsible for: Segmentation and reassembly: The transport layer divides the data received from the upper layer into small segments and reassembles them at the destination. Flow control: The transport layer controls the flow of data to prevent the destination device from being overwhelmed with data. Error control: The transport layer ensures that data is transmitted error-free and in the correct order. Connection-oriented and connectionless communication: The transport layer provides both connection-oriented and connectionless communication services. Multiplexing and demultiplexing: The transport layer uses port numbers to multiplex and demultiplex data to different applications. Some of the commonly used protocols in the transport layer are TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and UDP (User Datagram Protocol). TCP is connection-oriented, whereas UDP is connectionless. TCP is reliable and ensures that data is transmitted without errors, whereas UDP is not reliable and does not guarantee delivery of data. In summary, the transport layer is responsible for ensuring that data is transmitted smoothly and error-free from the source to the destination by providing flow control, error control, and multiplexing and demultiplexing of data.
