Can you imagine how the FDA/USDA would swoop in to prohibit homemade things being sold or served? Sadly, this type of lifestyle was lost in the US in favor of profit.
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 5 жыл бұрын
Not profit, safety. Adults in the US don't know what's safe and what is, so the government treats us like the children we are. But it's always silly to blame anything the government does on profit, or on anything else. Our government is elected, so we have no one to blame but ourselves.

@@k8eekatt You only get food poisoning if you don't know what you are eating. Trust me, if Austrian health inspectors would come to the US, you could easily kiss half of your businesses goodbye.

Uwe Schroeder the only state in the Union that does not allow for a cottage industry is New Jersey. All other states allow you to sell from a commercial kitchen that can be part of your regular residence. It’s true however that there is a lot of paperwork and licenses involved and then there’s the listing of ingredients on every item, bc the public wants to know. The expense of building a commercial kitchen/bakery can be very costly and most of the time requires a $50,000.00 investment. Corporate food has taken over every single bit of entrepreneurial spirit there ever was in this country, specially in heavily populated areas like NJ, NY, CT, CA, FL. Once the mom&pop establishments disappeared there’s really very little chance any cottage industry can bring their wares to market. The only saving grace would be an outdoor market during the summer months ....

Mr. Pilgrim so true!!! I visited all of Western Europe and some Eastern European countries and the food was impeccable. Served with pride and beauty. Fresh with very little handling and few if any preservatives. They always eat seasonally and the food in markets is displayed with pride and clarity of product names and uses. I’ve never seen any other country besides the USA place scan stickers on any produce. I’ve never experienced foreign markets selling immature unripened produce. This is also true of Japan. Great food, fresh, beautifully displayed, mature and at its peak.

So bury the brown sugar/herb jar so dirt juice gets inside and ferments....nums…. sounds like a hokey witchy thing to do. At first I thought they were joking about being witches but apparently not. I'm confused by the one witch having a crucifix in her home...what's that about? Also, why not wash the herbs and get the dirt and bugs off?? Oh no, put a cloth on and let them crawl all over the house lol.
@druidgrove
@druidgrove 4 жыл бұрын
Ryan Privee the jars being buried were probably wrapped in oiled or wax cloth or sealed with wax or clay traditionally to help keep moisture out and buried as it was a sort of primitive root cellar with a relatively constant temperature and dark. A common enough practice in certain climates pre refrigeration and in smaller dwellings with limited storage. I imagine quite few us of probably wouldn’t exist today without certain preservation techniques our ancestors needed to use. Usually you would leave the plants outside to let the bugs out but it’s tv so who knows?Depending on where the herbs grow and the type you might be ok without washing them, personally I would wash them but I grew up with very sanitised food and my body would probably not tolerate a bit of dirt or bacteria. As for her personal choices, who am I to judge her? It looks like a very traditional area and household she grew up in.

@Richard Kambinda Irish's a good comparison. I'm Austrian and trust me - if Tyroleans go full dialect, you don't have a fucking clue what they are talking about as long as you're not from the same valley. Had a Tyrolean colleague at work who'd go completely into his dialect when he was angry. Dude could've been talking Klingon for all I knew.

They need a better title for children learning; not little alchemists or "hexen" if I heard right. Children learning from their elders or parents should be enough.
