This really is a fantastic project. Together with a fellow fencer I teach Langes Messer according to Lecküchner in Austria and your video is a great way to get a "second opinion" to our interpretations. Would it be possible to get the different plays as single files (e.g. as a Google drive download), since it is very difficult to find a play we want to study by searching through the chapters of your full treatise video? If you could offer this somehow this would be such a great help for trainers of the Langes Messer. Thanks for your effort to produce such a great video

Amazing work Oskar - Now for those wanting to get into Messer - can people list where are some options/places to buy a nice thick, safe sparring messer?
@VirtualFechtschule3 жыл бұрын
Checking the Messer Guild on FB is usually a good idea for such questions. I personally can recommend three models I use a lot: Landsknecht Emporium Karl or Gottfried, Krieger and Kvetun. The last two are really geared towards sparring, while the LE models are also really good when it comes to handling like originals.

Definitely saving this to bookmarks. I want to learn messer so bad but there really isnt any interest at my local club. Im sure this took a LOT of effort to put it all into one place but it is a GREAT video. Well done and thank you :)

Excellent, I hope this will help some people in your club see why messer is awesome to practice. :)

I'm really at a loss on how I would learn all this different positions and movements and apply them manually. training training training is a nice wordshell that's obviously always true but me personally it neverreally helped. I'm quite literally have a plank in front of my head when it comes to such details and mirroring other people.

This would be a long discussion and I will have some videos in a month or so talking about this, but there's several ways of internalising a physical skill. Ultimately though, this whole video is based on a manuscript that isn't a lesson, it's a description of all the things that could happen when fencing with the Messer. So you practice them all in isolation, until you make the connections. But making those connections is what tends to happen more effectively in a training session from a good instructor, preferably taking your style of learning into account

I am an Aikido Keikonin, aikidoka and Daito Ryu Aikijutsuka and I also have a martial arts dedicated channel here on KZbin. Even if I trained my whole life in Japanese Martial Arts as a Historian I really love those channels who show the traditional historical swordsmanship (hema or not hema). I really enjoyed many of your video and so to speak I subscribed to your channel. It is always nice to help each other especially if we are fellow KZbinrs. And I really do hope to meet you someday. @VirtualFechtschule3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! As for the messer, both are made by Landsknecht emporium. The one on the left is a Gunther with thick edges and the one on the right is a custom pieces that is affectionately known as a Kleinkriegsmesser

I gotta say Oskar, as someone who's been waiting for an old injury to heal before returning to hema in earnest the fact that you've put this out there has made it possible for me to study messer, which weirdly is the only one handed system that doesn't seem to immediately aggravate my arm. Thanks for making it possible for me to train again sir.

Oscar, a kinda deep question on plays 30R-30V (at 6:10), the translation of "Here the master speaks abut the sixth element that is called the Wincker and is one of the main elements in the Messer and strikes well in the "free fighters"..." has raised a question. Does "free fighers" here mean "one who displaces" or is this an opposing "guild" known as the Freifechter (sp?)? We were trying to understand the connection between "displacing freely" and the behavior of the ideal target for these plays, which made sense, but we debated whether one who "displaces freely" is a fighter who strikes to your blade, or, one who once they have contact tries to "displace" or push your blade wide. Alternatively, could this be a play against the "enemy guild" and it was something they didn't know about? We felt like the latter version was less likely, but we didn't want to rule it out completely. Thanks! Great video!!!!
@VirtualFechtschule3 жыл бұрын
Hey, Check out the video that I did on the Wincker: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYPVapSdiNGLpqs I think it is somewhat unlikely that this already refers to the guild, because it got recognition much later. It would have to be some sort of semi-illegal fencing society for several decades, so I think that's unlikely. I think it's rather more the type of behaviour associated with a certain type of fencer.
@johndurish40923 жыл бұрын
Thank you, and agree, we think it's a reference to the behavior, vice a guild. But this then begets the next point, of "free fighting" - this seems then to describe someone who is loose and fast, and flash, looking to chase your blade? We tend to focus a lot on the context of the plays, because the pretext of your opponent's behavior should dictate your choices, no?
