It's not reliable to intentionally take out someone in a aero dependent open-wheeler. Racing drivers have a tendency to "ride out mistakes" because they cling on to the hope that the mistake resolves itself. Unfortunately doing that just leads to more mistakes, like understeering into another car. Stewarts are usually a lot more lenient when it comes to T1 incidents so they probably were debating on how and when to penalize Leclerc and the fact that they did so only at the end of the race doesn't mean that they weren't planning to. Although F1 race control has proven ass more often than not, so I won't bet any money on that. Unfortunately you can't prevent the injustice of the driver responsible for a crash being able to finish unimpaired while their victim is forced to retire. It's just a part of motorsports. About the damage; ultimately Leclerc only does what his race engineer tells him to do. If Ferrari tells him to pit, he will. If they tell him to stay out, he will. There also is only a limited amount of information Leclerc has on the extend of his damage. He can ask his pitbox "What's/How's the damage", to which they'll respond with "Endplate damage". That can mean that there is no more endplate, or it's hanging on by a thread. What he can see, and obviously acknowledged is his wing mirror. As a racer, I would be frustrated having to pit and drop out of contention, only for the only feasible repair being someone yanking off my wing mirror. Imo instead of holding it, I would probably have tried to rip it off myself. But the leverage probably wasn't there considering the seating position. I agree there should've probably been a meatball flag thrown. However I don't think that piece of carbon fiber threatened Hamilton's life. When drivers are killed or injured by debris it's usually small dense metal parts or wheels. I'd of course not want to risk it.
@Yes-vh7lm4 ай бұрын
Leclerc did lose his mirror. So that car was definitely NOT up to FIA technical regulations after lap 8. And bits were flying off that car as well, so it definitely wasn't safe either, as we saw with Hamilton's POV. So that car definitely should've gotten disqualified.

Almost killed is a bit exaggerated, my god, guy has a halo and a professinal helmet, would have been a headache at most.
@Yes-vh7lm4 ай бұрын
True. Massa survived a literal heavy metal spring right to the head. And helmets were way worse back then as well! But that was still not safe per se.

Yeah, it's bad.... Leclerc honestly should've gotten DSQ here after losing his mirror.

15s for intentionally driving without a mirror and front wing endplate seems way to low imo, especially considering how dangerously the debris came off the car.
@CanadaPlayz484 ай бұрын
Leclerc was holding his left mirror, his endplate broke off Lewis' right mirror and then Leclerc's mirror flew off it was not a good day for mirrors - specifically Charles' - apparently

The fact that Lewis could even react to the debris at that speed is crazy

Actually Leclerc refused to pit and all the debris was coming off his car and flying on to Lewis for a number of laps. I think Leclerc went into a rage zone, but we know the Fia does Lewis bad. This, 2021, new rules to take away late braking etc etc.

I'm a Lewis fan, but please stop saying that everything is anti-Hamilton. Sure the FIA has been biased against him, but not everything lmao.

@@gauravmalltarlok5354 2021 and the 2022 rules designed to destroy late braking, is ANTI-HAMILTON.
@Yes-vh7lm4 ай бұрын
@@DavidJohnson-dc8lu I think that's more of a Mercedes problem than a FIA 2022 regs problem. The reason why the Mercedes is poor for late braking is due to Mercedes' rear stability issues. The technical regulations are fine. Just the race stewards who have made some questionable decisions in 2021-2022. That said, the 2022 regs have been VERY MUCH in favor of Adrian Newey and Red Bull. The regs were practically tailored to Newey's strengths.

Title should really be the FIA almost killed Hamilton by not waving the black and orange flags ever (unless you're Haas)

Helmet safety is a lot better since Massa's incident so I seriously doubt a piece of endplate would kill anyone.
