At the end of the day, it’s really all about discernment, because not all secular music is bad, everyone’s wired differently and everyone’s walk don’t have to be the same, it really comes down to what artists you listen to, how their songs make you feel and your reason for why you listen to them, nobody should be judging each other for what they listen to if it ain’t hurting anybody or themselves but at the same time, we definitely should be mindful of WHAT and WHO we listen to

@@LethaboLovesOra Same. When I rededicated my life, music was my stronghold, and rap music particularly. But like Lecrae said, back in the 80’s early 90’s, there weren’t any gospel rappers other than Toby Mac, and that didn’t grab my attention. Then there were the Gospel Gangsters and T-Bone, and there were the closest I could get to hardcore gospel, without the cursing, but still not really interested….. Then I thought, what if I continued listening to these artists, and then all of a sudden, my favorite ones got saved, then what? So my prayer became, Lord, deliver me from the music, and lead me to music that is uplifting, beneficial and can feed my spirit. And he took my desire away over time. I was lead to Lecrae and Reach Records, and everyone under that umbrella in 2012, and I haven like back since. I can’t STAND to hear today’s music, rap or r&b! God and CHH changed my life…..

We just had Priscilla Shirer on here and she said something so profound that will forever be etched in my head. “For many Christians the question is how close can I get to sin without crossing the line, but for the disciple it’s how close can I get to Jesus”. Something may not be inherently sin but is it elevating me? There are some that are called to the dark places and of course we need to know how to strategize and operate to get other folks into the kingdom without compromising ourselves. Not to mention we do have proof that A LOT of mainstream IS EVIL. So why not just save yourself the trouble of things sticking to you and just not listen. Overall this was a good listen and it’s ok to agree to disagree. I believe that as we grow with God, He will convict us of things and we will want to get rid of it.

However, I often have to consider, what is the source of this musical composition? And lastly, I know the Holy Spirit will SPEAK directly, when we ask him to reveal truth to us. I think part of the thing people struggle with, is that they know, once they ask for the truth to be revealed, they have to make a choice. Some don't want to know the truth. My prayer is that the Lord reveals the truth to all who desire to see and hear it, as well convict those who aren't ready yet.

i might be a white boy but i grew up broke, too. i was just into NAS as much as i loved Nirvana growing up. I also grew up Christian and lost my faith around the age of 17. came back to Christ in 2019 after years of being a H and crack addict. i'm 40, now. been clean since 2013 or else i would be dead (and probably in hell. i don't think i was a "real" Christian who understood what it meant to be one until 2019). I didn't come back to Christ right after i got clean but I know now that Jesus saved my life from addiction. it was quite a journey before i finally asked Christ to be my Savior and the God of my entire life again. that being said, i still listen to some secular music and i listen to a lot of Christian music, as well. i still live in the hood. most of my old homies are dead now or they cleaned up. most of them are gone, though. it's sad. some secular music is cathartic for me because i have seen and been a part of some extremely dismal situations and periods in my life. i got PTSD from some of the stuff i've seen from my drug years. i've seen child and spousal ab***. i've seen the depths of despair and poverty. i've seen people lose their lives and others take their own. these days, i repent daily, pray for wisdom and descernment and the will to follow His wisdom and descernment. this world can be a very dark place and i know a lot of you out there have experienced similar stuff but a lot of other people do not understand how bad things can really get. music i will NOT listen to these days, though, is hedonistic, satanic garbage. there's a lot of that out there, unfortunately, and it is getting far worse every day it seems. especially in hip-hop. pray for CONVICTION daily. it has helped me remarkably in my own life. it's not fun being convicted and heeding that conviction but it is important to ask God to keep you in check. Since 2023 I’ve been on a journey with secular music. What started out as fasting from it for a month turned into a year plus and the benefits are revolutionary for me. I never really listened to anything too ‘crazy’ but when I tried to get back into secular music, songs about love, life etc nothing ‘sinful’ everytime the next day I always felt off. I couldn’t explain until God reminded me of when I stopped drinking sodas for like a year and when I had my first soda it wasn’t as enjoyable, my body had been so used to water it’s like it rejected the soda. And that’s what I believe is happening with my music. Don’t get me wrong it’s the HARDEST thing I have done and doing but I know this sacrifice is worth it. Good job. I gave up secular music in 2010 when I was 18. I used to make secular music when I was in a rap group called CC Boyz. I used to rap and sing secular. I stopped listening to secular music and I stopped making it. 2010 I turned to Christian music. Lecrae, Dee-1 and The Cross Movement are the main ones I was first introduced to Christian rap.

And your point about studying the greats who may not even be Christian is spot on-sometimes we forget that even though they may not be saved, the gifts and talents they have still come from God. Whether they acknowledge Him or not, their work can still glorify Him. Honestly, sometimes I even hear the Gospel in “secular” music. I think that as Believers, we need to be careful trying to make a case for our sin. Then we become a stumbling block for others. Especially with the kind of influence God has blessed Lecrae with. Secular music has a disastrous influence over American culture. Drugs, killing, hyper sexual behavior, desensitization, imaginative living, & outright witchcraft is being preached through the dark secular music platform. It is not of God. The Bible teaches us to abstain from the appearance of evil Thessalonians 5:22. James 4:4 teaches that to be friends with the world is to be Gods enemy. We all struggle with something but don’t call sin good or okay just because you struggle with it. We must call a sin a sin even if we struggle with that sin. This was a long commentary on why those that struggle to let go of secularism should feel good about it. Music is *much* more influential to shaping culture than movies _(in our country)_ . When we watch movies, none of us think that the actors are actually *LIVING* what we’re watching, so we’re less influenced to live that out. In hip-hop culture, authenticity is esteemed *highly* , so people are assumed to *LIVE* what they talk about. In that sense, it becomes much more influential and shapes the social norms of society and the way that many people think. In that regard, it can be much more dangerous, so it's talked about more.

One word. Hypocrisy. The same people that hate on Christians who listen to secular music are the same people who watch secular shows and movies with cursing, killing, and sexual content. Maybe 1% of Christians truly make an effort to block out all secular content. My late Pastor "Roberto Torres" who was a Producer and Rapper had this same discussion with us as artists during the time you started Reach Records. His vision with working with secular artist, doing production with them, and sharing his faith in Jesus with them was a call he felt God had given him. Our views on this very topic was divided, and what once was, didn't manifest. You breaking this down today made me think of him, and the vision he had. Everyone isn't called to do what you do as you know, but I sincerely believe God has poured out His favor in your life because of the heart you have towards all people. When I first heard your music, it inspired me. I had never felt close to god in that way. The 116 movement was an open door and then you emerged with a passion for Christ I had never seen before. Then the media and professional Christians started showcasing you as a contradiction to faith and how a Christian should be and I was conflicted. But then I started seeking God about your message and your faith and this video help confirmed what I found. Christianity has helped create a divide that Jesus Christ lived and died to get rid of. We live in a secular world and it is our faith and walk in Christ that separates us. Christianity will have people believe that its morality, good deeds, and traditions that make you a good Christian, but it is our belief in him and that he died and rose for ALL people. Christ went TO the people and showed them the way to salvation while Christianity treats salvation like a club with limited access to those who are deemed worthy. 21 clip at 0:16 is a CLEAR operation of the spirit of doubt, a sin! Psalm 50:15 God made promises to us and wont go back on the word! Believing in Jesus and not obeying his word is exactly what satan does himself. No one can serve two masters - Matthew 6:24 Cut off secular music (satan) or Cut Off God ? Romans 2:12 explains that people are held accountable to God's Word to whatever extent they understand it. “All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.” In other words, the more you know, the greater your level of accountability so now that you know this will you continue to do as you wish or Gods will. @@mramirez5239 It's both... there are Christians always looking to condemn something that they don't understand because it doesn't line up with what "they believe is right". They fail to get context and proper understanding. There are Christians for whom this might not be their speed but they must follow their "own" convictions. None of this is a heaven or hell issue in my opinion. Crae makes music that inspires me to keep fighting the good fight of faith. For example, "Only Human"... is one of my favorite tracks. I just don't understand why Christians want other Christians to stay in a box and not impact the world with our God-given gifts? We were meant to do more than just stay in our Comfortable Christian Circles. At the end of the day... God allowed and guided the Israelites to take over the land and possessions of the wicked nations. Our voice and talents need to be loud just like the world's voice... we should be tired of being locked in a box by other Christians.

I also appreciate the discussion around meat sacrificed to idols and how Paul talks about when you might choose for or against eating meat. I have been reading Revelation lately, and particularly the letters to the 7 churches. This topic seems to fit in will especially with what Jesus says to the church in Thyatira. He has a big problem with those who promote sexual immorality and food sacrificed to idols, but goes on to say " But I say to you, the rest who are in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not known the deep things of Satan, as they call them-I place no other burden on you. 25 Nevertheless what you have, hold firmly until I come. I say no ! I I use to but one Wednesday night at a worship night /Bible study the Holy Spirit convicted me to get rid of my secular music. It was hard because I loved reaggeton , sala etc but I did it. I felt so much better spiritually. Now if I’m in a grocery store and hear a dirty secular song I feel uncomfortable. It’s so worth it. What you listen to , watch , who you are around you become.

They do a lot of spells on music and movies and the secular artists aren't afraid to let us know who they worship and work for. As an artist I try to find a happy medium because I don't want to be seen as "corny" but I also want to be honest. As a listener I feel what we entertain effects our spirit more than we realize. It all depends on where you are in your walk. I also listen so I know what's going on in that realm so I can stay with the times.

All of the biggest rappers talk about selling their soul to the devil. Considering the soul is the mind and the emotions, when they stand in the booth and record these songs and we listen to them, is it possible that we are being involved in a different type of "worship". Is there some type of subsconcious effect on our joy and our faith. I mean, i grew up on busta rhymes and nelly, and christian rap has just started to get more creative. Alot of the times i have to train myself to listen to music that uplifts the Lord and remind myself to keep my mind on Him.

I tried listening explicitly to christian music only simply because it was christian and it was taught. Did that for a few years until I told God this is tiresome. I feel more in bondage as a christian then when I was fully sinning. Only to realise that almost everything Crae just said is spot on. We are free in christ people. Let me end it with this. My mother in law had a crazy ice cream addiction. She ate and ate and ate. We would confront her about it (out of love) and tell her it wasn't healthy but she just continued. Mind you she ate a lot of ice cream every single day. Until one day.. she just quit. I tried to test her a few times and see if she really didn'nt want it and she said: It's not that im not allowed to take it or can't take it.. I simply don't WANT it anymore. God bless y'all!

Amazing perspective - one thing I’d say as a fellow artist/songwriter and Christian still trying to figure this out for myself (obviously not one on Lecrae’s level but my bedroom counts!) is that there’s a very different relationship w/ secular music for someone a Christian that creates it vs one who just consumes it. Musicians have a genuine reason to study Lil Baby’s cadence in order to keep up with (and hopefully improve upon) the progress made within the music space in their own music so that God can use it to reach others through it’s quality. I listen to secular music on occasion now solely to keep up with new innovative sonic ideas in the industry, but I do take deep issue with the lyrics through the Spirit and can’t enjoy what they’re saying/let myself get enveloped in it the way I once did. Paul did this same thing by becoming familiar with greek “secular” poets. However, someone who doesn’t make music or art themselves as a Christian - there may be a real problem with simply listening to the music and letting it envelop you the way it intends to. Music can be a deeply life-altering, spiritually charged, all-encompassing and immersive experience that, if accompanied by evil ideas, can really seep into a Christian’s spirit and - in my opinion - should invoke a level of conviction. There’s levels to it.

Listennnnn. I really respect Lecrae and the artists that worked hard to change the game. I love that you offer a whole different messge to someone who's looking for "rap music". But up until about 45:19, this sounded like a master class for rap artists. Because you were a pioneer Lecrae, there were a lot of different avenues that you had to travel. But by no means would I encourage my 15-year-old son to listen to secular music. Because the truth of the matter is anyone that is wanting to persue rap and but not necessarily fall into the industry trap, You yourself have made that available to others. You and many many other artists have changed the narrative of how "christian music" sounds. Yes if someone wanted to become a great filmmaker they could reach out to Spielberg, but they also can reach out to the Kendrick Brothers. We each have our own convictions. Listen I'm bald as ever and I love Jesus. For some Christians that's a no no and for other's who cares, my hair or no hair is not a salvation issue. Now to the subject. If a Christian believes they should only listen to Christian music that's your business,. I guess that means not going to the store, any parties or interactions because someone somewhere will be listening to secular music. If a Christian has no conviction about secular music that's their business, I grew up on Gospel/Christian, old school R&B & Smooth Jazz (Boney James, Najee) as I gotten older, wiser in my walk I have moved away from R&B I prefer Smooth Jazz. Even in that ,I am a strong believer in not listening to anything raunchy, overly sexual or plain nasty. But I don't have conviction about listening to Jazz, and I love Jesus with everything in me. And respectfully when I get married I don't want to hear"Near the Cross" nor any Christian music at the wedding or my wedding night 😂 but if that's what another Christian desires that's their business. I said all this to say less be respectfully of folks convictions and stance on music. If a person just came from the streets only listening to Tupac and they get saved, don't expect them to turn to Hezekiah Walker overnight its a process. Some don't eat meat, look at TV, only wear modest clothes for others they believe this is bondage we all have our own convictions. Let the Holy Spirit do the work, and just live for Jesus Christ.

Tbh I grew up a "screw up" yet when I herd secular music I used it to "express" what I could relate to and "survive" what I was going through/dealing with but at the same time flipped it for the positive to press toward the Kingdom of God. The secular sacred divide is biblical. We ourselves did not just make it up out of thin air. “Your priests have violated my instructions and defiled my holy things. They make no distinction between what is holy and what is not. And they do not teach my people the difference between what is ceremonially clean and unclean.” ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭22‬:‭26‬ ‭NLT‬‬ As someone who struggled with listening to secular music early in my Christian walk I know first hand how detrimental it is to continue listening to secular music. That’s the equivalent of us consuming junk food on a daily basis and expecting our bodies and mind to still be healthy. It’s not going to happen. This doesn’t only apply to music but all forms of entertainment. Anything that we consume that goes against God affects us greatly. It’s really scary to me when Christians think they can watch and listen to everything and that it won’t affect them. It’s delusional. We need to pray for people with this mindset 😔
