Cumbria is being divided next year into two local authorities,Cumberland(welcome back)and Westmorland and Furness. North Yorkshire is also going to become all Unitary under North Yorkshire Council as it will be known as. Now that just leaves Lancashire as the 15 or so Councils(both District and Unitary) and the County Council cannot decide what to do with reforming local government there. Personally I think all English councils should be unitary and I think it is time local Government through all of England is reformed once and for all.

May I say you are so right there then too-all councils being unitary would sort out the confusion between them once and for all surely so then too?!

No mention of the Redcliffe-Maud report though. I think that would have been helpful as there's no context to how we got to the 1972 Act.

Northumberland is a county council not a unitary authority as the map suggests. The problem with having all unitary authorities is the distribution of population and local folks relationship to what would be amorphous political entities. If you live your life in a field why would you consider the council administered by townies 59 miles away would have your interests when planning?

Northumberland became a unitary council in 2009, it just kept the name Northumberland County Council.
