Watch in HD1080p: • 1. Introduction and Pr...
I begin by introducing my three major teachers, and go on to outline the background of the series: early attempts at histories of Chinese painting, photographing and cataloguing projects carried out in the 1960s-70s, changing ideas about how art history should be constructed and written. I introduce Ernst Gombrich as a model for the kind of art-historical narrative I will attempt, but also emphasize the strong tradition of critical and historical writing in China that underlies my account. This first lecture ends with a brief introduction to early pictorial art in China: Neolithic painted pots, hunting-style bronzes, the earliest paintings on silk from Changsha.

This lecture series in excellent. So impressed he kept teaching in retirement and found the time to share his knowledge. This is 'long form' so you need some time and patience to get the most from it.

Fantastic lecture, this form of education invaluable to thoose of us not able to study the subject at a university (wish i hadn't spent all my studentloans on architecture). I would recomend combining theese lectures with "beyond representation" which is available gratis as a digital edition from the Met, professor Cahill also mentions it.

This was for me so inspiring - a wonderfull way of showing very beautifull and interesting examples of art and talking about experiences, cultures, styles, techniques, and just showing through the examples ways of reflecting on art experiences -

At 1:33:06 there are some interesting clues to tools and techniques in application that provide valuable insights into the daily lives of the people at that time. Surely someone has researched this further.

Edward Teller also put his lectures on tape. However, his were more useful as he taught his students how to build an H bomb in their dorm room.

I want to like this man...but one hour on and I am learning nothing. This old school patrician style just does not work. If he has the knowledge...he is unable to share it thus far.

I have to agree. I mean, come on, if you have something to share, please share it. This guy spent too much time as a lord of the classroom where people had no choice but to sit there and take this nonsense. He needed to get to the point.

@@stoneh2ovino true 🤣 i was hoping to learn the truth from painting. the painting can tell you what clothing they wore, architecture, items, belief, lifes, costums, ritual, tradition. etc
