I'm a retired Major US Airline Captain with over 31,700 flight hours Worldwide. My daughter wants to be an airline pilot, therefore, I discovered these video's on my feed. I was spell bound and was amazed at Dr. Tina Srivastava's simple but realistic approach to teaching. I have learnt a few things in this aerodynamics lecture for private pilot's that no one had ever explained in such thought provoking manner! Please keep up the excellent work Dr. Tina Srivastava, thanks for enlightening me to aspects of Aerodynamics which I was unaware of. I also want to thank MIT, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston for airing on KZbin over 25 video's reference private pilot flying totally free of charge to the World!

Deuteronomy 18:10 There shall not be found among you any one who maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or who useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11 or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. Proverbs 7:27 27 Her house is the way to hell, leading down to the chambers of death. 1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come and hath given us an understanding, that we may know Him that is true; and we are in Him that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and Eternal Life. Acts 17 29 “For inasmuch, then, as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold or silver or stone, graven by art and of man’s devising. Proverbs 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. 1 John 4 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is not of God; and such is the spirit of Antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come, and even now already it is in the world. 2 John 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ hath both the Father and the Son. John 8 12 Then spoke Jesus again unto them, saying, “I am the Light of the world. John 11 25 Jesus said unto her, “I am the resurrection and the Life. He that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; 26 and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die. Believest thou this?” John 6 68 Then Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life, Psalm 119 30 I have chosen the way of truth; Thy judgments have I laid before me. Psalm 119 11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee. Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. 1 Corinthians 2:5 that your faith should not stand on the wisdom of man, but on the power of God. 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walketh about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 1 John 2 16 For all that is in the world - the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life - is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away and the lust thereof, but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. James 1 21 Therefore lay apart all filthiness and the superfluity of wickedness, and receive with meekness the engrafted Word, which is able to save your souls. 1 Corinthians 15 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 1 Thessalonians 5 9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ John 3 18 “He that believeth in Him is not condemned; but He that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 16:20 Show them a picture of a racing car and asks them "what is this a picture of?" Really? Is this part of a test or something? Just explain what needs to be explained, don't try to interact in a patronizing fashion just because you like to talk to people that way and MIT doesn't seem to check on those types of behavior. Just teach what you have to teach. That is your job! Not asking silly stupid obvious questions! And criticize students for not playing the kindergarten's game.

Yeah, but, this isn't the 5th grade. These are adults of drinking age. Something is wrong here. Does she think she's talking to the learning impaired? Perhaps so. There have been complaints about the readiness of college entrance students. Standards have been eased. This is not exactly advance education. These are our future engineers? No wonder corporations want foreigners to fill their jobs openings. "Who has build a paper airplane before? Raise your hand."
@Platypus_Warrior

@@mu99ins Well the lady giving the lecture IS a foreigner (Dr. Tina Srivastava) and looking at her profile she seem more than qualified to explain the subject. Richard Feynman also used very simple words to explain things. This is about picturing the reality of things before diving into the theory. "Lecture N°2" A mistake that many do is to use all their vocab where it's not necessary. She putting everyone on the same page before going further. I understand physics from my own observations, then I relate the formulas to it. Playing with paper planes is part of my understanding of aerodynamics in it's very core. So I disagree with you respectfully.
@mu99ins
@mu99ins 2 жыл бұрын
@@Platypus_Warrior - You misunderstand my comment. I am not questioning the professor's qualifications. I am not saying the words are simple. The approach is tenative, as if the students were fragile as grade schoolers. The information flow is slow. If this was a class for English students, I would allow for the slow flow of information, but not for engineers. The students won't be just competing against other American graduates. American corporations prefer foreign graduates.

I'm a molecular biologist too, AND a pilot, aircraft designer and builder and experimental test pilot. And this lecture is already disappointing. I wouldn't tell anyone to NOT watch, but I would urge them to ALSO build and fly model airplanes- and I don't mean fancy radio controlled models- I mean 1) start with balsa gliders and work your way up to 2) rubber band powered airplanes. By the time you figure out how to trim these models against the offsetting propeller effects, you'll know more than 80% of the pilots out there. (I will say that this lecture is better than most- the real problem is that it's tailored to a naive audience that should have been handed those balsa gliders FIRST...) As an example of her "equal transit theory" debunking inadequacies, she should have pointed out that "curved on top" is clearly not the reason for flight if those same airplanes can fly UPSIDE DOWN.

In order to answer the question at 1:01 where the question asked was, why doesn't the corkscrew effect cause the aircraft to roll?! Tina did give the correct answer. In order for it to make more sense, I'd add that the backward flowing air from the propeller flows along the body of the aircraft passing along the inner part of the wing (Part of the wing closer to the body) and thus doesn't have great effect on the aircraft due to the fact that Work done ( Force times Distance) isn't that much of a high figure as it is closer to the fuselage/body, which is the center, of the aircraft. However, when the backward flowing air strikes the tail of the aircraft, the Work done is significantly greater due to the increase in distance between the point where the work is done and the center of the aircraft, even though the force might be almost the same. (Work = Force x Distance) In conclusion, there might be a really tiny rolling effect on the aircraft but it won't be significant to cause the aircraft to actually roll. On the other hand, the corkscrew effect on the tail of the aircraft will cause a major effect on the stability of the aircraft. Interesting Fact: This is also why some aircrafts have their rudders' original position tilted slightly towards the right (Right Rudder) [ aft facing forward ]. This is usually set up by the maintenance crew at a known angle in order to avoid major stability issues faced by the corkscrew effect and thus make flying safer & easier. Feel free to ask any questions! :)

This dynamic MIT professor excels in elucidating fundamental concepts, making complex ideas accessible and engaging. In stark contrast, the demeanor of the senior faculty member, Professor Frank Handel, at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, was anything but inspiring. His aeronautics instruction was hindered not only by his heavy Polish accent but also by his propensity for belittling his students, deriving an unsettling satisfaction from their humiliation. A former pupil even took the initiative to apprise him of their career progress through a heartfelt letter, only to receive the document back, marred with red ink corrections addressing grammar and spelling errors. This incident marked the end of their correspondence. Professor Handel, however, took great delight in recounting this memory, finding amusement in the impact he had left.

Dr. Srivastava is an exceptional teacher, instructor and inspirational person. I’m a reasonably smart guy, and I learned a huge amount form her lecture. I believe that Dr. Tina should become a role model for young Americans. Far too many young girls and boys have no direction. Imagine taking a class to an airfield and having Tina introduce underprivileged children to the marvels of flight. How does a person learn all of this? Through having an enquiring mind. All that needs to happen is to plant the seed into one's mind. Minorities also require role models. Remember the motion picture Hidden Figures that covers the lives of 1950’s black female brilliant mathematicians working at NASA. Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughn crunched the numbers prior to the application of supercomputers. During World War 2, the all-black military pilots known as The Tuskegee Airmen flew dangerous missions. They never lost a pilot. There is 1955 movie “The Tuskegee Airmen” that is a must-see. And finally, as a major role model, is Dr. Ben Carson is recognized as one of the world’s preeminent neurosurgeons. His childhood did have complications. However, by the ninth grade, he was improving in school and the rest is history as he went on to graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School and later Carson was appointed the John’s Hopkins university's Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery. There of course are other brilliant minorities who have achieves success in academia and architecture. However, it was Dr. Srivastava’s MIT lecture that captivated me, and due to her being employed in a senior position at Raytheon, one of America's leading R&D and defense contractors, I believe that CRT (Critical Race Theory horror story!!) as being forced upon school students is doing a huge disservice to our country. Throw out the horrible teachers. We need more intelligent caring teachers and professors like Dr. Tina to shape the minds of our kindergarten and grade school students in order for The United States of America to soar to newer heights, and who knows....on a wing or aircraft designed by a young mind who was inspired by Dr. Srivastava. Brava Doctor!

A tiny nipick here - while large surface on the rear of the race car is colloquially called a 'spoiler' they are in most instances, actually a wing that creates downforce. If they were just a 'spoiler the drag penalty would be too high. Modern race cars have carefully shaped wings that can be adjusted to vary downforce depending on the track to improve cornering. A spoiler on an aircraft does actually 'spoil' the lift and as a result can be used symmetrically to decrease airspeed or non-symmetrically for roll control.
@ILSRWY4
@ILSRWY4 Жыл бұрын
You are SPOT on... fundamental difference between a Spoiler and a Wing is one creates parasitic drag (spoiler) while sticking up in the slipstream, and the other (the wing) produces induced drag by producing "lift" upside down. Both produce downforce but in different ways. Indycars, F1 cars, IMSA DPi and the car @17:17 picture all have WINGS. A NASCAR stock car has a true Spoiler similar to those used on Aircraft. Spoilers on Aircraft when used as lift dumps 1) loss of altitude without increase Airspeed, or 2) on touch down, kills lift to allow the full weight of the airplane to sit on its wheels for better braking. Same for NASCAR, the spoiler kills the lift the car body produces allowing the car's full weight to sit on the track for better traction. But as you clearly pointed out Wings actually produce upside down lift called downforce. I'm surprised that MIT instructors never made that connection between cars wings and the horizontal stabilizers on tail of the airplane which like on the car are upside down wings, producing downforce.
@TinLeadHammer
@TinLeadHammer 8 ай бұрын
@@ILSRWY4Spoiler on the back of a road car like a hood on a hatchback is a spoiler, it spoils the laminar flow, which AFAIK paradoxically decreases drag.

The omission , when discussing aircraft rather than cars etc is the aerofoil . Air moving across objects creates some lift, but without the aerofoil , aviation would not exist as it is. Air moving across the top surface of an aerofoil moves faster, lowering the air pressure. The pressure on the flatter underside is greater. This is why the aerofoil is so efficient as opposed to other objects . Take the wings off the aircraft and go full thrust down the runway . If the tailplane was still attached , it would generate some lift and pitch the nose into the ground at speed . With no tail it would flip over . Neither of these are flying. It's the wings and the wings alone on any aircraft that generate anything approaching enough lift for controlled flight . And it's the aerofoil cross section that provides that. Quick mention of Bernoulli , but for flying , it's physics not maths. Blow across the top of a flat a4 sheet of paper. No downward force or angle required. The paper lifts because the air pressure decreases on the top.
@darrellthomas5495
@darrellthomas5495 Жыл бұрын
Great lecture. The equal transit theory mentioned roots itself in assumptions. At 27:30, we mention calculating lift with the Navier Stokes equations, and one of the assumptions is the Kutta condition (28:45). The Navier-Stokes equations not only have conservation of momentum, but conservation of MASS. Specifically, between streamlines in an open system . In reality, air flows faster over the top than the bottom (38:57). Those faster molecules of air on top have to go somewhere, and this is the base drag on the trailing edge as it mixes with the slower flow rate on the bottom. Once you impose the assumption of the Kutta condition, along with conservation of mass (what goes in must come out or accumulate), then you have this equal transit confusion. Hopefully this clarifies where it comes from.

This is an IAP (Independent Activities Period) course. It is a special four week term at MIT that runs from the first week of January until the end of the month. Students, faculty, staff, and alums can hold sessions on things they really enjoy. Basically it's what the MIT community does for fun in between semesters.

I don't understand 16:05, who can help me......the race car generate lift only when it is an arched shape. So it's not everything moving through fluid can produce lift, right? And when it comes to fuselage producing lift, because fuselage is a shape of cylinder, it produces lift only when there is an angel between it and the airflow. If the fuselage flies horizontally, it won't produce lift, right?

Min 41:00 correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure because your flaps can increase lift generated. Using your flaps on takeoff can allow you to become airborne in a shorter distance. A pilot performing a short field takeoff typically has his/her flaps down to generate more lift to clear obstacles in a shorter distance than they would in a clean configuration.

Most race cars today, atleast the ones in the formal 1, 2 and 3 generate the bulk of their downforce not with the wings, but with how airflow is directed under the chassis and let out through the rear diffuser. But of course, what she said definitely holds true for a regular car with/without spoiler.
@onebylandtwoifbysearunifby5475
@onebylandtwoifbysearunifby5475 3 жыл бұрын
They sort of turn the entire car into an upside-down wing too. They establish a high pressure region at the leading edge (nose), which causes an acceleration of air down the concentration gradient, to the rear. Higher velocity: lower pressure, so downforce results. So maybe considering the front spoiler and rear as "flaps on a wing" is a better analogy?
@steves2694
@steves2694 3 жыл бұрын
The proximity of the bottom of the car to the race track creates a suction that helps hold the car down as air passes beneath the car. The cleaner the flow of that air, the greater the downforce. One reason you see the bottom of extremely fast race cars with fully sealed chassis bottoms.

She delivered the lecture really well, meanwhile the audience are very sharp too, noticing the inconsistancy between the explanations on P-factor and Gyroscopic pregression. Her reply actually may have not clearly explain why the P-factor doesn't cause a pitch up but yawn to the left of the aircraft. As a matter of fact, the P-factor at the moment when the propeller is entering into a relative pitch caused by the oncoming airflow does make the aircraft to yawn left, but if the propeller's relative angle of attack to the oncoming airflow maintains stable, then the center of the propeller's tracting force will stay stable to the left from the center as she explained. To put it simple, a P-factor is a stable and long-term situation, while the gyroscopic pregression is momentary coincident to the force applied. If the oncoming airflow changes rapidly it's magnitude and direction, the aircraft will be observed with flactuation in yaw and pitch even it maintains it's angle of attack, speed and propeller RPM, as the force generated changes. If you got chance to see the flight control system of a Bell 407 helicopter, you may find the cam assembly for cyclic control have a special curve in the slot, which I guess is to compensate the gyroscopic pregression effect that may cause the helicopter tilting to undesired direction when the pilot moves the stick.

I believe she is wrong about the paper plane's shape. I convinced my planes fly longer (and slower) if I don't bend the edge flat. I think Bernoulli's principle applies at least as much as Newton's in this particular case.

Actually she explains things fairly poorly, not extremely wrong and adds too many unnecessary things making it sound much more complex than it is. She does explain some things correctly, but hardly uses correct terminology even when she says common terms are needed at the beginning. I didn't hear her say vertical or horizontal stabilizer. She never clearly affirms that lift is the top-bottom difference in pressure, but only says "conservation of momentum which is technically wrong. Among several other things the gyroscopic precession should not have been mentioned and both of them couldn't answer the question about it. I can provide details on request.
@Observ45er
@Observ45er 4 жыл бұрын
@@null090909 Bernoulli explanations for lift are always wrong. Newton explains most of the full story, but not in the way most amateurs explain it. A moving wing creates pressure gradients. Those pressures: A) provide more pressure under than over, thus pushing up. B) Those *SAME* pressures cause all the accelerations of air you see around a wing and this satisfies Newton's Third Law also. . You get a paper airplane to fly well and slower by paying attention to balance (CG) and trim (up elevator). See the book by Barnaby. How To Make & Fly Paper Airplanes Captain Barnaby Navy

41:53 Flaps on takeoff also allow an aircraft to get into the air sooner (not necessarily faster) because of things like short runway or contaminated runway (slush). Flaps provide lift at slower speed.
@Algrimor
@Algrimor 10 ай бұрын
For P factor, when the aircraft pitches up or is flying at a higher angle of attack than level, the right descending blade has an increased angle of attack to the relative wind than the left ascending blade. This difference in angle of attack creates a lift differential between the two, and the descending blade is creating more lift aka thrust, and because there is more thrust being produced by the right propellor, there is a left turning moment. P factor is most pronounced at higher angles of attack (increased pitch) and high power settings, like a climb or takeoff, or when practicing slow flight.

There is a misunderstanding. If there is a smooth steady flight, their lift is equal to the weight and thrust is equal to the draft. Not has to exceed, but be equal. Only while changing velocity or altitude do these forces exceed one over another.

The presentation is absolutely adoring and great. At some points I am not entirely sure if they (both) give intentionally short and simplified answers or if they in fact don't really have the answer. Most prominent this was on the question on the origin of the p-factor, none of them mentioned the asimetrical angle of attack on the propeller as the reason for the asymetrical thrust creating a force with a line of action right to the center of gravity, resulting in a momentum leading to a left side yaw....

First she says lift is created by the wing redirecting air in a downward direction. Then she explains lift is created from Bernoullies principle. Take an ordinary 8.5 X 11 peice of paper. Hold it more or less horizontal to the ground between your thumb and index finger. Now, blow down only over the top of the paper. The paper rises up even though no air is being deflected down. Why? Why does the paper rise up? When you can explain why the paper rises up even though you are blowing down onto it, you understand the main way a wing creates lift.
@viggolundhild3086
@viggolundhild3086 3 жыл бұрын
well, if you only blow on the bottom side of the paper you will note it goes up. bernoullies principal will lift the sheet of paper but newton will lift the rest of the aircraft
@davidsine4390
@davidsine4390 3 жыл бұрын
@@viggolundhild3086 That still doesn't explain the contradiction in the video. She stated (implied it's all impact IMO). Does a wing produce lift via Bernoulli's principle or Newtons? Is it one or the other, or is it both? If both, then is one much greater than the other? She also stated air molecules don't have to meet up with each other at the back of the wing. That's true. But if they don't, then a void occurs somewhere on the top surface of the wing correct? Which I don't beleive happens. I would suggest even a flat piece of wood inclined to an airflow requires the air molecules to more or less meet up again at the back of the board. Which essentially requires the molecules on the top of the board to travel faster. They push on each other if you will. Also I would question that impact forces create most of the lift. I have always taught students the paper example and included the point about impact forces as well to punt the issue. None of them ever questioned it, but I appreciate the input.
