LECTURE 3: IUPAC NOMENCLATURE OF CARBOXYLIC ACIDS
Using the rules developed by the IUPAC system, carboxylic acids derive their names from the parent alkane based on the number of carbon atoms found in the structure. The steps involved in aliphatic carboxylic acid nomenclature include:
1. Determine the name of the parent alkane by counting the number of carbon atoms in the structure.
2. Drop the ''e'' from the end of the alkane name and add the suffix ''anoic acid'' to the end of the parent alkane name.
For example, look at the structure shown in Figure 2. To name this compound, follow these steps:
3. Count the number of carbon atoms in the parent chain. Starting with the carbon in the carboxyl group, the number of carbon atoms is four.
4. Look up the name for the parent alkane. In this case, butane is the name of an alkane with four carbon atoms.
5. Drop the ''e'' and add ''anoic acid'' to the alkane name: butanoic acid.
The name for this compound is butanoic acid.
