Lecture 3: Thermodynamics of Dissolution, Solubility of Organic Liquids, Gases and Solids

Here we introduce the basic thermodynamic framework describing the dissolution of neutral organic chemicals into water, describe how solubility changes with the initial state of an organic specie, and provide a review of the various molecular interactions and energy changes involved in aqueous dissolution. The topics covered should provide students with the ability to assess and explain the relative water solubilities of simple organic compounds.
