This video covers scattering at an impedance discontinuity on a transmission line. The reflection coefficient is derived the the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is discussed.

This is JUST the stuff I am trying to come up to speed on. I have successfully constructed a band-reject filter using RG58, but trying to apply the same thoughts to creating a band-pass filter ... so far not so successful. WAY wide pass band as compared to my 3 MHz bandwidth of the band-reject filter.

Awesome dissection of scattering on transmission lines! At 9:45, there's a small typo in P_{avg}, the magnitude of V0+ should be squared. Thanks for another great lecture!

Thank you! Let me point you to the official course website. I recommend using this as your portal to the course. You can download the latest version of the notes that usually has corrections that are not in the videos. For example, this is a mistake that I previously caught and fixed, but the mistake still exists in the video. @@fuzzyelectrons The goal is for them to match one-to-one, but it does not seem reasonable to record a whole new video to fix a small error. Also, I used to host the courses and videos from my university, but I they kicked me off. Since then, I have been converting over to the EMPossible format.

Are you asking about the derivation around Slide 14 in the video? The trick here is the complex exponential term. Remember that when the argument of exponential is pure imaginary, it is really a just a cosine function that is bound between -1 and 1. These limiting values are used to determine the maximum and minimum values of the |V(z)|. Also not that we are not finding |V(z)|. Instead we are finding the maximum and minimum values of |V(z)|, which is quite different and easier to do.
