if we indiscriminately increase r in the efficiency expression then prof said temperature spontaeously rises such that ""automatic self combustion occurs"" . does he mean the engine explodes???

Increase in r means to compress working material to higher and higher pressure which leads to higher temperature, so given that r is high enough Temperature during compression could reach ignition temperature of air fuel mixture which would cause combustion.
