This second lecture of Chapter 3 is a continuation of our discussion on the modeling of absorption as a partitioning process. Here we develop a linear free energy relationship for the partitioning of chlorinated phenols into a complex heterogeneous solid, a wood fiber processed for papermaking. In doing so, we will apply the equations developed in the previous lecture and look at the influence of factors such as temperature and ionic strength. This example demonstrates modeling a complex sorption process by breaking it down into a collection of individual partitioning mechanisms. This approach often results in identifying a dominant contribution, which can accurately serve as the focus for model development.
