Loren Wright, assistant director of interpretation, discusses how the scenery just outside Paris inspired the five artists of "Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde: The Modern Landscape" and continues to inspire artists today.
Bringing together more than 75 paintings and drawings, this exhibition follows five interconnected artists-Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, Émile Bernard, and Charles Angrand-as they retreated to the working-class suburbs of Paris in the 1880s and found there an evolving industrial and social landscape that fueled intense creativity and experimentation.
