Socrates | Ethical Teachings | Virtue | Philosophy Lectures | Lectures by Waqas Aziz | Waqas Aziz
Socrates, a great Greek Philosopher, presented his own Ethical Teachings. His Ethical Teachings were in a sharp contrast to that of Sophists'. At that time, Sophists taught people that Virtue is pleasure. Socrates, then, pointed out that moral actions must not spring from subjective pleasure, but from the true concept or definitions of moral values. For this, Socrates inquired about virtue. He believed that one must have a proper concept of Virtue in order to practice virtue in life. He further added that no man intentionally does wrong. All wrong doings arise from ignorance. He stated that Virtue possess two main features. Firstly, virtue can be taught. Secondly, virtue is one. The Ethical Teachings of Socrates were criticised by Aristotle.
This Lecture explains Ethical Teachings of Socrates in detail with appropriate examples.
