I really enjoy your LED grow light videos because I always always learn something new! This is really important for me because I’m on a very small budget and I need my lights for dual purpose. I grow a small herb & veggie garden indoors during the winter but I also need the same lights to keep my precious orchid collection alive during the winter as well. So thanks for all your videos and for showing us so many options to choose from. You are amazing!

Yeah, I hope more low and mid end led brands start widening their fixtures and moving away from crappy diodes. But when All the low end shit comes from China for dirt cheap they want to make the unit as small as possible to ship more, so that doesn't help.

Well now I wouldn't be so hard on eBay, I bought my first lights on eBay, I did do my homework and bought Visparpectra, 600 W 497pars of light each, gave $65 each for them and they worked great, I grew pounds with them before moving on to more professional grade lighting, so folks you can start growing on a low budget just do your homework for the light is the most important buy you'll do, I now use my beginner lights in the nursery !

The Full Spectrum Lights are perfect for Photoperiod Plants while the other specialized lights seem to fit Auto Plants. Many growers make mistake of trimming off water leaves too early of Photos as it puts Photos in confused state and forces to stop growth and start flowering too early not realizing the Photo will still veg and gives the Kola Buds that re veg look. Knowing this from light makers the lights now can be used for such cases as in just using RED instead of Full Spectrum where as when Photos on natural timing and start PREFLOWER ( around 10th week of a 2 week period before initial Flower stage for most strains ), PLANT STILL VEGGING until it gets to start of Flowering stage as most of US knows the path to use full spectrum at Preflower giving Plant the needed spectrum to thrive off.

You could have chosen four smaller (about 100 watts true draw) for a more even spread over that 4x4. Better results for just 400$, and you can hang them closer. I've got one Mars ii 1200 (550 watts true draw) over a 4x4 and I only ever need to run one switch at a time and have a 2.5" head room. At that height with both switches, I have no doubt it could bloom full sun plants, but if I did it all over again, I'd get 4 smaller fixtures. Less cost, lower wattage needed and better spread.

I just want to dissuade anyone from buying any grow light that utilizes Epistar, active slug, diodes. They are not efficient and you would be better off utilizing some of the other grow light technologies, such as CMH/LEC or HPS. Epistar diodes produce around 1.1 umols/joule while a 600w HPS produces around 1.5 while costing less per fixture.

you cant just go grab any leds off the shelf you need to put the extra money in for leds in order to get the most out of them light is just as important as nutrients and we all know none of those liquid bottles they sell in the hydro stores matter just stick to the basic mineral nutrients your macro secondary and micro nutrients same with lights they are marketed different you can go get a shitty led light that's not going to provide the necessary light the plant needs or you can do it smart do some good research and spend a big buck at the begining but save in the end and payyyyyy offff big

Yeah because no-one wants to take the time to sit down and read a fucking book about light absorption check out kind led k5s you want to be able to adjust the wavelengths to the proper nanometer and colors plants need full spectrum light but it helps slot with quality you can really make the blues and reds contrast if you veg with 600w you need to fruit flower with 1000w

do you at least make money or break even on these youtube videos? i've seen quite a few of your videos and can't help but notice how many thousands of dollars you spend on useless equipment, and seem to be encouraging people to think that they need to spend this kind of money to grow plants too. do you feel guilty at all for this, or do you actually believe you have to spend thousands of dollars to grow quality plants? how much money does bluelab pay you? don't you think at this point you should at least overtly state that these videos are basically bluelab advertisements?

+Lucas Plumb Thanks for your comment, Lucas. I work as a plant nutrient researcher and product tester / designer. I get loads of gear on loan or for free. What do you really need? A light source, fresh air, water and nutrients. Start with a soil-based potting mix in containers and hand water in a sunny conservatory if you can. It will be much cheaper. Me, I’m not doing this as a lifestyle choice. I enjoy the science of growing and most definitely the tech of controlled environment - which is where I’m heading. Not everyone’s bag, I understand, but when you’re trying to experiment on plants, a totally monitored and controlled environment is an entry-level requirement. I hope my exploits in 2018 will be of some interest Lucas.

Håvard Johansen Thanks for your feedback. I concede that sometimes the pacing of my videos is on (or over) the limit of acceptability but it’s 2017. By the end of 2020, notwithstanding the advancements of LED technology, the trend towards faster presentations will be three years further down the line, and my videos more acceptably paced. Apologies for my being the “guinea-pig of now-ness” in my conscious future-proofing experiment and I hope the headaches go away.

Everest Fernandez Some subtitles would fix the problem for us less advanced before-ness viewers, then I can mute the video and put on some Enya
