Really good information! Interesting how they’re offering IR and UV on their own drivers.
@Just4Growers2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jake. By assigning diode types / groups to specific drivers, manufacturers can achieve higher overall system efficiency, rather than having to find a 'best fit' for all with a single driver. UV-A diodes are more commonly run exclusively on their own driver (but not always!), whereas far-red (730 nm) tend to be grouped with phyto-red (660 nm) to keep their ratios consistent. If growers were, for example, to boost far-red and reduce red (if they were on separate drivers) it could be akin to giving them rope to hang themselves with as plants could exhibit a shade-avoidance response and start stretching up! Not a good look for indoor gardeners. In 2023 you will see more tech coming to market including special timers that keep the far-red diodes on for an extra 15 minutes after 'lights off' to promote a quicker flowering response / transition from veg to flower. The new options that LEDs are opening up for indoor growers keep expanding! Exciting times.

It's crazy how much LED has improved and have become more affordable. But for anyone reading and has never bought one, do your research, listen to people like Everest and shy away from ANY blurple or most from overseas. There are a few good ones from there but beware. I've learned the hard way that sometimes spending a little extra is definitely worth it.

A couple questions... Have you ever toyed with making your own grow lights like Growmau5 just buying the COBs, and is it worth it. For a while I've toyed with making a Volksgarden rotational type garden system and making a grow light to fit. Any thoughts?
@Just4Growers2 жыл бұрын
Hi BigRegg, thanks for your questions. No, I leave that kind of stuff to Growmau5 :) The old "Ecosystem" style gardens worked well because HID lamps emit their light 360 degrees perpendicular to the lamp, so positioning your garden all around it (with no reflectors on the lamp, obviously) made great sense. With LEDs it's not so cut and dried- because they don't have the same style of radiant emission. I can definitely see some potential for stadium SOG style grows with LEDs though.

Amazing video, super insightful. Though isn’t ppfd more specific and important? PPF can state output but doesnt say where it’s going so it might just all be in the center instead of evenly spread. PPFD gives a density map of how the PPF is spread out along a 4x4. As shown in the video, it’s more important to check if the corners are evenly distributed. Thus it should be the other way around. If the manufacturer just gives the PPF but has no PPFD map then avoid.
@Just4Growers2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your insights Xd. I would argue that PPF comes first-total output-so this is the must-see metric. PPFD maps can be useful for showing the footprint / coverage of the light across a two-dimensional plane at a certain distance from the fixture - it's just that, if a manufacturer just shows PPFD maps and no PPF, it's a red flag for me - invariably the distance is much closer than that which is feasible when growing plants in reality - in other words, they measure at 6 - 12" to show very high PPFD numbers - but the PPF gives all-important context. The other biggie is the spectral distribution. (No point having a super high PPF, or PPFD, if all the light is concentrated in one region of the spectrum.) While we are on the subject of PPFD, I would like to add a few more points. We measure PPFD using a PAR meter-typically a handheld meter with a silicon photodiode-housed in an acrylic diffuser cap so that all incoming light is spread homogeneously over the photodiode. The amount of electricity the photodiode produces is then converted into a light intensity reading, in terms of micro moles of PAR light per m2 per second. All good, but-by its very design-a PAR meter doesn't take into account the direction or column density of the light it receives. For example, notwithstanding the spectral differences, there's a big difference between the quality of light emitted from a 600W DE-HPS and a 600W multi-array LED-the light origin is spread out over thousands of diodes (typically) with a multi-array LED compared to all coming from the same (relatively small) arc tube with a 600W DE-HPS. My point here is that if you add up the surface area of all those 9mm diodes, it will be 2 to 2.5 times more than the surface area of the arc tube. As indoor growers, we've been banging on for years about the importance of getting our lights as close as possible to our canopies, without causing localised over-transpiration stress - proximity is arguably even more important for multi-array LEDs. Your plants are the best PAR meters.
