I used to install granite countertops years ago. Something that extravagant back then would’ve probably been $80-90 sq/ft. We also hung our sinks with silicone. We didn’t screw them in place unless they were cast iron farm sinks. We’d silicone the the sinks without tape as well. Smooth em with your smallest finger and then wipe over it with a paper towel soaked with acetone. Perfection.

Hah! Thanks man. I don't even know how I ended up on this channel, but tomorrow I start a new job for a company that only does two things. Waterproofing, and silicone caulking. Looks like I'm buying a couple of bottles of acetone on my way in in the morning. Maybe they already use that technique, or maybe you just gave me a shortcut from the lower pay rate as a trainee, to the higher pay rate as "competent". I've done tiling before, but always just relied on spit and ya finger for smoothing joints.

I am a 40 year sign shop veteran. You do not want to seal the bottom side of the cabinet wood always has moisture in it and it needs a way to escape. It will go up and hit the Apoxsee and then it’ll turn down and go out the bottom. If you sell the whole thing up it will take the Apoxsee right off the top or end up taking your paint off the bottom.😢 Moisture in the wood will take the least resistance to get out.

I am very impressed and your countertop looks awesome. After ready many of the comments and understanding the pros and cons, I still think epoxy countertops are a great option when granite, etc. are not in the budget. Although I have 27 years of commercial / industrial construction experience and enjoy taking on challenging DIY projects, I would be hesitant taking on an epoxy counter top of this complexity without an experienced advisor to guide me. Although I’ve completed many DIY projects with little push back from my wife on the design, etc., I think having the professionals at Stone Coat Countertops design and fabricate our countertops would save me from a domestic. LOL 😉 P.s. I really like the finish product however, I would’ve painted (flat black) the underside of the overhang to give it a finished look. I might of also installed a reglet and LED strip lighting in the overhang to give ambiance lighting to the cabinetry. Thanks again for sharing.

Hey Mike, beautiful build. I am always amazed by your creations. Is there a reason you did not seal the bare wood. I would think you would want to at least paint the overhang to partially continue the illusion of stone, and protect the area near the sink from moisture. Also, covering the whole thing in paint/sealant would stop any warping issues which may be caused by humidity changes over the seasons. I am not telling you what I would do, just asking from the master so I can learn more. Thanks.

The unfinished bottom seems like a massive oversight. With an island that has a large overhang why wouldn't you coat that as well?
@montehicks48983 жыл бұрын
That is what I was thinking. Cause he said in the beginning that this is a very expensive home being built. I am not down grading his amazing work. But as you said massi e oversight. My question is this if they had the over hang marked out why didn't they do epoxy on the bottom to make it feel like one piece. Cause as a home buyer spending the money he said. The customer is very attentive to details.
@yuriyt64753 жыл бұрын
I was also waiting to see whether or not they are going to coat the overhang. Once the caulking was applied I realized that was it. You can see plywood and screws underneath. If someone were to drop a fork, this tens of thousands $ looking piece immediately depreciated in the value. It’s a great looking piece , one of my favourites so far, but the unfinished wood at the bottom kinda kills the piece. I would like to hear how would they address this post install if this was an oversight.
@mrgrey43443 жыл бұрын
Yea the unfinished bottom was an eyesore to such a beautiful piece. At that point i’d spray it black with some silver or blue glitter to keep up with the colour theme.

I've watched quite a few of these epoxy projects on youtube, and one concern I have is: epoxy tends to yellow after a few years, no matter what brand, type, or formulation. Have any of your projects been around enough years to know if they yellow?

That scares me too. I wanted to put in some fat white veins near a window and the warnings on RK3 Designs scared me off using Stone Coat for the white dyed epoxy. I just ordered Art Coat for the white portion of my pour that is supposed to have higher UV resistance.

Our company does this stuff as a add on service. I will tell you folks the truth about epoxy coatings on counter tops because it’s a very small part of our business and I honestly don’t care if anyone ever asks for it to be done. 1. I don’t care who says it , which product gets used or who does the work, epoxy coatings will not look new for very long and never as good as once done after 6-12 months of normal use. Polishing it will never make it look like polished glass as it does when first applied. 2. We’ve been in business for 29 years and I can tell you folks with money and who live in high end homes ARE NOT having epoxy coated countertops done in their homes. Yes it can save someone money and looks ok for a Short while depending on your standards or if your remodeling a flip home. Other than that don’t waste your money on epoxy. Note I didn’t name my business or say what’s better because I’m not trying to sell you myself or any service. Just giving you the honest truth about epoxies. Just like I tell customers if after this info you still want it then at least your were informed and can make your own decisions .

@x3a3x33 жыл бұрын
Nice job! As for the led lighting (I’ve done dozens of pro installations) I recommend using a layer of heavy duty 3M double side tape or some other adhesive to secure the strip. The adhesive that comes in the back of most commonly available led strips will come loose with the heat from the lights after a few months depending on how much use they get. Even if they last a little longer they eventually fail. I had to redo many of my earlier installations because of that. Once I started adding the extra adhesive I never had to waste time fixing loose strips again.

Beautiful, creative work .Thank you for showing us. I have a few questions: 1. How much does it cost to buy all the materials for a complete stone slab like that? 2. How long does it take from start to finish? 3. Why didn't you pour another clear epoxy layer on top of them to make it pop and increase the strength? 4. How strong is the stone slab and how long will you expect it to last? Thanks again.

I am totally blown away....I am subscribed and I am ready to learn as much as I can from you guys. How long did it take you to be proficient at creating the works of art you create. It is so awesome that your offering to teach people how to get to your level... well maybe I have had to retire from being a contractor for the last 30 years so I am opening my woodshop to the public. I have built basic woodworker items for family and friends but never sold anything publically. That is going to change and having the ability to create projects that I hope to someday be as beautiful as what you produce is another iron in the fire so to speak. I would say $4500 - $5500 dollars for a piece of stone with the colors infused in this piece. That is a total guess because I have never purchased a slab of any kind. Did you say that the final epoxy finish can stand up to 375 degrees of heat without damaging the finish or was it more or less. My brain is firing on all cylinders, swimming in possible things that I could possibly create. I am almost ready to buy a 4' x 8' cnc router so I could just make basic signs and epoxy in the letters. I am sure they would sell. I am very interested in using the epoxy system for doing inlay work connected to designs built on the cnc router. Create unique front entry doors with inlaid epoxy's..etc...... the builds are endless. Your imagination will be the only thing holding you back because you can create some very unique items. Thanks for taking the time to teach all of us out here in Tube land. I really appreciate the effort it takes to shoot the videos and create a well produced video like you produce and they are very well made with a straight forward format. The video doesn't have a bunch of wasted time like some of the other "free" videos out there. The one thing is the constant 8 chords the guitar guy was playing did get a little annoying but that's a small price to pay for what you are teaching. Peace

So I use stone coat epoxy for large and small pour projects. I gallon is about 160 bucks. The dyes vary in price and stone coat sells their own but you can buy diffrent types. I love these guys projects. If you are making boats, check out a brand called total boat epoxy. It does the same thing but I found it doesn't tend to yellow when exposed to saltwater and sun. Go with high quality dyes.

@@Cereal_Killer007 I haven't done anything as large as these countertops, but have made coffee tables and done some very deep pours for decorations. It takes some getting used to when you start mixing multicolored epoxy, the first one I did blended a bit to much due to the way I poured it and changed the color of the whole thing but still looked good. Stone coat is good epoxy, but I'm partial to allumilite and total boat. Stone coat yellows out doors rather quickly compare to others. Just my 2 cents. But for indoor countertops, what makes them great is they offer EVERYTHING you need in one store, thickener, , dye, and several types of epoxy for specific things.
