This is my 2nd attempt at fixing my LG 47ln5400 TV. The first repair lasted about a week and might have lasted longer if I would have turned the back light setting down. The end result is removing the bad leds and just soldering the + and - connections together to complete the circuit on the led strip since the leds are in a series. Then I just turned down the back light brightness to a lower setting to help prevent more leds from burning out. If a problems occurs Ill update as needed.
TV still working and on the wall as of 8/4/2017 :)
If you like the channel and videos and want to donate, feature a product or help out with a project, you can. Send me message or consider donating with the Links below. Hi there, yes it is a good idea to turn your backlights down because this is the bias voltage to those LEDS. The hotter they run the less lifetime they have

An outstanding tutorial..... big thanks to u.. I'm facing same problem with my LG TV. LG technician came here said repair cost would be almost 80% of the TV price. Can u pls let me know what is the type of LED light I need to buy ? what is the tool u used for checking those LED, Is that multimeter? It's all LG TV which has problem here. If anyone from LG read the comments here, they'll feel ashamed of their LED product. Guyz, pls do not buy LG LED tv.....

We have the same LG TV size and the bulbs have burned out twice already (got the TV in 2013 and the first burnout was in 2015, then again this year). We had a guy come to our house to fix it and it cost us about $200 repair each time. Don't know how long this next repair will last.

good job but you should use smd led like the original,you can find on Ali express or e bay.most used diode is lg led 3528, its 3.2v but that doesn't mean is the right diode for every tv .I don't recommend to short + - that mean more voltage for other led's.trust me i have replaced more than 300 diodes by now

Just use diodes. Using off the shelf leds can be difficult and the brightness will be off or the new leds wont be bright enough to see through the diffuser anyway. Sometimes you can jump out the terminals and get it to work like you did, sometimes that may not work and will put the feedback circuit into shutdown. I just use whatever zener diodes I have on hand, this is usually 1N4148s which are easy to get anywhere.

yeah, its a bit easier than trying to source those leds or the led strips from a tv, and you can't really notice one or two leds out anyway. Also, I turn the backlight power down to keep the leds from dying as much. They like to set it to 100% from the factory which kills them.

If you don't mind a small darker area where the led was, which is only visible when one color is displayed, you can just short the burned led. I did this on my TV, as the driver is current limited. I think mine was limiting at 250 mA, and I had 3 which failed. It lasted for almost a year, when others started to fail, but I got new LED strips now.

I think you started to blow the diodes you replaced because there is a Lack of heat transfer between the LED & copper strip which I believe that acts as a heatsink as well as a conductor,at least in the LG television sets,one that I'm working on now. I was thinking about soldering a standard led in,but then I heard of the trouble you have been having with that. The LG unit I pulled apart last night has 7 LEDs on each strip & 3 strips in total which equals 21 LEDs connected in series which are rated at 6 volts each in an LG unit. That means a total of 126 volts DC is needed to run the diodes,I got between 125 - 130 volts dc out of the power board so that was o.k. I found that 2 of the 3 strips were o.k. when connected to 24 volts DC. The other strip didn't light up so I removed all of the diffusers to test the LEDs with my multimeter & selected the diode test setting. 5 of the LEDs had a 0.7 volt drop across them (o.k.) whereas 2 of them were at zero volts (open circuited). So,I will order some 6 volt surface mount LEDs from China for the unit then solder them into position !!!!
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is all I could do at the time. If more leds go out I will replace them with the surface mount leds because I have a couple of led strips from another tv. Will post a vid if and or when it happens and update the description box.

Russell Booth No, his replacement LEDs burned out because he used run of the mill 5mm leds. That for all we know is rated for 20mA. The TV led driver board is going to regulate current, so it could be targeting 200mA. Of course the leds are going to fail. Also, doesn't matter what resistor you put in series with it because the power supply regulates current, so it's going to ramp up the voltage until it gets to desired current. If it was a thermal problem it would work for a short while, but he said it burned out immediately.

To test mine I plugged in TV and turned it on with the screen off and LEDs exposed and you can see it flash before auto shutdown , I could see 3 whole strips dead. Then I plugged in the L1 & L2 strips and they lit up and all stayed on so through process of elimination I found that the R1 and R2 strips were the bad ones, after I bridged (+ & - ) together all the strips turned on and I could see the rest of the individual broken LEDs. I soldered all of them and It still works, I thought a short circuit would heat up but I guess not if it is a specific voltage limit, it is also DC. I then thought if I did not bridge it or short circuit it, then the remaining LEDs could have more voltage forced through it and burn them out faster. well just keeping brightness lower for moment.
@Iahusha777Iahuah
@Iahusha777Iahuah 7 жыл бұрын
I think I connect a full strip with one partial strip the L side so all would work (when enough are burnt out the TV has an auto disconnect, I think when it is more than 3 or 4 , so since I eliminated on bad strip I could see which specific ones were out, and I did bridge them because if I did not then the 3 or 4 bad LED limit is passed and it shuts the whole thing down. Who ever left this thing on the side of the road must have the brightness cranked for years, really unnecessary if watching TV at night. I think the vivid setting cranks brightness up, also sidenote; there is a brightness setting and a backlight level setting which are seperate.

No it's ok, i just wanted to see the picture. Because i did the same repair on my client set and i got some white points (more visible on white or clear pictures) on the bands i've removed one led. I'm not sure what is the reason and i wondered if you have the same. But you said no.
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 7 жыл бұрын
+Julien Oh ok, yeah mine are more of a darker spot one the bright white screen. Did you turn the backlight down. I would say that since the leds are removed, it allows more voltage to the leds that are left. I would lower thw backlight setting. There is a comment on here were a person recommended putting a regular diode in place of the bad led to simulate load like an led.

hi. i have a 55 inch lg tv which is also having the same issue. my question is if u simply patch the + / - as u did in yours, wont that area have a visible sign of lower illumination? or did your diffuser help even it all out. especially given that there were more than one bad led points.
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 7 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct, it can have a darker spot if you have a few leds out in the same area like mine. You can only see when that part of the screen goes really bright white. Its not really noticeable during regular viewing. The diffuser does a pretty good job. So if you have 1 led you probly wouldnt notice much.

*How to destroy all of the Led's in your Led TV* You can't just make a bridge in series. Voltage changes in a series wiring so you have to replace the led with another which need to be the same without any resistors
@oatmeal8586
@oatmeal8586 4 жыл бұрын
Not exactly, following the series circuit analysis: the current flow in a series circuit is the same, but the voltage changes; it means that the current flowing in one strip is the same, no matter how many elemnts, however, the voltage does change. Assuming that 24v is the ideal voltage value and following the Kirchhoff Voltage Law, we substract the voltage value for each LED (Vl) (which is arround 1.18v and 1.5v, typically) and the resulting value is the voltage of all the resistive elements (which I'm gonna call Vrt); then you divide Vrt by the total number of resistive elements to find out the individual voltage value of each resistor (Vrn). After that, You add both Vrn and 1.18~1.5v (LED individual voltage) and the resulting number is the voltage of that node, which I'm calling Vn; lastly, you measure the current of the strip (or take the value given in the specs, which you should have since you're making repairs on an electronic device), I'm gonna call this value Is (current on the strip), so you follow the equation: R=Vn/Is Where R is the value of the resistor you should put between the + and - terminals, although, I recomend using a slightly bigger value (i.e. if R=375, use 380). That way you shouldn't burn your LED's

I'm trying this during lockdown. Found a 55 inch last week before all hell broke loose so this will give me something to do. There are 11 led's per strip in my lg tv . Is there a way I can test a and b strips seperately with a 12 volt power supply? thanks
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can test the strips. There are test points on each strip, just hit them with your 12v power supply.

you cant jsut connect + and - together, you need at last put resistor in place of led, do you know what led are used ? 5050smd ?
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 8 жыл бұрын
Thats what I did and it is still working great. Yes you could put a resistor in place of the led. As for the actual leds, they do look like a 5050smd

Hello average Joe What resistor did you end up making it work?
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 7 жыл бұрын
+fitz phillips In the video I said that I removed the resistor and just soldered the + and - together where I removed the bad leds. Its still up on the wall and working great :)
@fitzphillips5370
@fitzphillips5370 7 жыл бұрын
You mean that you shorted on the PCB( -+) or did you mean that you eliminated the resistor and soldered the LED directly without a resistor?
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 7 жыл бұрын
Yes I shorted the (-+) on the pcb and eliminated the resistor and bad led. I also turned the backlight down to help prevent more leds going out since they will receive more voltage. Another suggestion from a viewer said you could solder in just a regular diode to simulate the load of the led and that would keep the other leds from getting to much voltage which I think is a great idea.

Sir i have THOMSON 42PB130S5 Intuiva(2005), when i connect DVD, Sat receiver, USb etc i get audio perfectly, but the screen doesn't display anything not even light. technicians around me don't have any idea on how to go about it. could you help me sir. actually works fine except for the screen that remain black.
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 7 жыл бұрын
Does the screen have video at all or did it quit on everything. If video has stopped on everything then do the flashlight test to see if anything shows up on screen. If you can see picture with flashlight then that means your backlight has gone out. This could be the backlight inverter board is bad or one or more of the cfl bulbs are bad. There are a few videos on youtube that show you how to check the inverter board to find out if just the board is bad or a cfl is bad.

I need Help ASAP. Those 3 or something LEDs that didn't turn on, were they burnt? I'm using my good old eye and flashlight to spot bad LEDs. Is that enough? I only spotted 1 bad one. The rest are OK and don't show any defective signs under the clear plastic things on top of them. I'm asking because I don't want to spend like $80 bucks on the whole set, I only need one LED strip. I guess? Also, because I don't want to get electrocuted by testing them.

The repair worked thanks. I tried testing the strps with a 12v supply but there wasnt enough power. So I just put the new part in one of the 3 strips. 1in 3 chance and powered up the TV disassembled. I chanced on the right row first time and it is now fixed. People have winged about the colour temperatures of the LEDs being out on replacement but I do not see that problem at all. I had to remove cat fur from the LED that my cats had walked around during the job. They do their best help.
