Real, live rock n' roll is sloppy. Its also loud. However you judge Led Zeppelin, they are arguably the most influential band of their time and the standard to which all, later rock bands are compared.

It has to do with the actual band themselves. If it's just a band doing recordings, without much musical ability and only showmanship (you can usually tell by the level of how well written the actual songs are), then they will sound bad live. Sadly, that is fairly common in rock music (as opposed to jazz, where live sometimes even sounds better at times). But there are exceptions, of course. And it's bands like Led Zeppelin that prove that they are a great musical group with true musicianship, and that not all rock will sound worse live than on the disk. It's all about what band it is.

+Checkmate1138 True. I always prefer listening to their live albums (mainly How the West Was Won) because they sound better live. The live version of Bring It On Home is fucking amazing on that album.
