Wow really? Bonham was clearly deteriorating. He just didn't have the stamina he used to and if you compare tours he's so much more tired as this tour went on. The shows were cut down to 2 hours and Jimmy was also erratic every night having his heroin issues in full swing. They were not in great shape physically and it was only a matter of time before Bonham or Page died for the excess. Cologne (2nd night) was a decent show for that tour. But the tour is what it was - a warmup for the North American tour of late 80 into early 1981.

It's my favorite too - they were reknitting and moving forward. It's tantalizing to think of what might of been.
@zoso19806 жыл бұрын
Ram4 - no doubt those factors were at play in '80. Further, Bonzo was NOT ready to go on the road. Between Jimmy's heroin problem along with Bonham's - which has only been quietly discussed. Bonham needed more time. The anxiety medication clearly was harming him psychologically. The accounts of Bonham's behavior during the taping of All Right Now in '80 showed he was pretty fragile. His outburst on 9/24/80 that Robert should be playing drums and he should sing was alarming because it highlighted depression and extreme anxiety. However, all that aside - what I love about '80 is they through it all - were still trying to push forward and at times the magic was still there. I have the personal opinion if Bonzo hadn't been pushed and was allowed to get his heroin problem under control the events of 9/25/80 would'e never happened. His extreme anxiety was augmented thanks to the prescription cocktail he was on. JPJ has said there was 'personal issues' at home too. It's been said Pat was furious over the heroin addiction. Poor Bonzo.

Very grateful to see a glimpse of the 1980 tour. The cobwebs were getting cleared off, and the Zep was blowing into the 80s. The 1980 Germany tour, like the early 1973 shows in Germany, pick up steam thanks to a good crowd. Hopefully a high quality copy of any of these 1980 shows will turn up.

Bonzo looked like he was having fun and playing his usual self right up to the firecracker incident in Vienna and the next night at Nuremberg when he passed out after the first three songs. It's like after all that happened, he just didn't care anymore and of course openly laid his true feelings out to Robert on the way to the last rehearsal in Windsor, England. RIP Bonzo.

Unless Page went into rehab there was no way Zep was going to have a successful 1980 tour. His health was failing along with Bonham.

Train Kept a Rollin' and Hot Dog!! They sound much improved over Knebworth, though that may only be the difference between the soundboard and the live sound the audience hears. Page in fine form, even the double neck sounds mean. Thanks for posting Mark!!

It was only meant to be a warm up tour for their return to North America. The press wasn’t even invited along for this one. It was more about getting back in shape than putting on a show to be saved for posterity

Yeah, know what I think I'm finally looking at? One of those rare 1980 audience 8mm reels! And when you said you remember these first turning up in the early 90's, I recall them too. In my experience, me and another collector would tell each other that we had a guy's list from NORTH CAROLINA and he was the only one who had ANY footage from 1980 yet the 8mm format was silent, no sound. (which was okay cuz we were curious to see anything from '80 at all. It was like the Holy Grail to us...……. and still is.) So this Cologne is a big 17 minute chunk of a set of 4 1980 shows that all add up to 40 minutes approximately.

Rather strange comment. At times Bonzo was fine in 80’, but a certain amount of time he just was a human metronome. Page had some troubles but overall he was more consistent than 77’. Not only Plant was kind of lukewarm about this tour, Bonzo was very conflicted and very unsure about this 80’ tour.
@zoso19803 жыл бұрын
He was changing his playing style. Sure he was moving towards more nuance instead of pulverizing, however the '80 tour has pretty good moments laced with those in which Bonzo is clearly not at his best. Hanover isn't a great gig. Berlin isn't his best either. Other shows he's spartan in his fills. Go check Stairway from Vienna. After the firecracker incident, it seems he's pissed and just wants to get out of there. The best moment's of the '80 tour are the first few gigs, then after the Nuremberg incident he slowed down and almost, dragged in places if the tape speed is accurate. That's why I don't like Frankfurt very much. I'm not sure it's the tape dragging or Bonzo really played that lifeless. I think Bonzo's playing was refining itself. His taste and chops would've continued to grow had he got the chance, IMHO.

Bonham got worse, as did Page, both drunk and stoned out of their heads a lot of the concerts in the late 70s. Plant and Jonesy were usually the only sober guys on stage.

When I see Zeppelin clips from the beginning of the early 80's and their bootlegs. They sound so great and magnificent, despite Jimmy Page was high on Heroin. But watching this clip makes it seem so eerie and like final days till the Mighty Led made of Zeppelin come to an end with its main heart beat crushing down its ship burning down in flames.... from this show 3 months and some days of 1980 on the 25 of September... the heart beat stop functioning. Bringing down the most powerful and mighty band that lived thru the era of the 70's... if only they could have prevented it. Led Zeppelin would have made awesome music and destroyed the 80's soft mellow music... which some are good hits... but I guess Led Zeppelin wasn't meant to be in the 80's??? Idk but I bet if John Bonham was alive..... man so much to think...... what if...... he was still alive? Keep touring with Zeppelin? Which I know he didn't want to anymore, he was homesick.... who really knows......

old school hawking I cannot even imagine how much his death affected them😔I mean think of being jimmy page and in the beginning, search to find a band and than the greatest ban Led Zeppelin was born. He, along with the others put everything they had into the music. Zeppelin was jimmy's baby. They toured together, had a special chemistry and really bonded. There was so much happiness surrounding zep. Imagine all of that just being taken away from you...how would you even go about your life? How awful:(
@cragkeeper5 жыл бұрын
@@zarhazaak3081 I disagree.... the end of the magic had already come by 1980. As far as reforming Zep, yes it was tough at first as any death is, but if it weren't for the bad vibes between Plant and Jones , I do think the Zep could have easily flown again. Time heals all wounds. Except for stuff like Jones VS Plant. It's never talked about. Because fans have too much respect. I just calls them like I sees them. But I did enjoy the many years of Plant solo afterwards.

Speezbort Zappfing3r You know what SZ? I seen Jimmy play seven times. Every concert except one, he sounded like shit. The 96 Page/Plant gig at the Cal Expo Amphitheater in Sacramento, Jimmy Page played like he did in The Song Remains the Same.
@zoso19806 жыл бұрын
Jimmy has said, most visibly in '84 while being interviewed with Roy Harper that he never rehearsed. He just went up and did it. Between that philosophy and the heroin you got those teetering moments of greatness and grateness. Further, Jimmy has stage anxiety. If he doesn't settle into a gig, he won't be good. Look at Knebworth 8/11/79. Between P.A. problems, string issues and heroin. He's fighting the whole show. Compare that a week earlier he's better, not perfect but much better.
@alexkx85996 жыл бұрын
